View Full Version : Tricky Question

Hey Ze,

I've got a difficult social question that you n' the rest of the Sports Racers may be able to help me with. Normally, I'd sit down and work this out for myself, or turn to someone with a bit more sense, but I figured after seeing you answer a number of questions from fans (I may be a newbie in the Forum, but I'm a die-hard fan of The Show), I'm hoping you can help me out:

Tomorrow will be my 15th birthday (woohoo!), and I was joking around with one of my friends (hereafter known as "Joe") in school. He asked me what I would like as a present, and I jokingly said "World peace, unity of the races, and the 3rd Season of Arrested Development. Apparently this was overheard by another boy in my class ("Bob"), who is, one could say, a bit of a social moron. I've been nice to him over the past three years; watching his back and keeping him out of trouble. Now, he's come to think of me as his friend, even though our interactions can be basically summed up by: Ultimate Frisbeee, a general interest in gardening, and the fact that we're both Democratic. So our conversations mostly involve comparing runner bean techniques while discussing our annoyance with the president and throwing his orange frisbee back and forth.

Anyway (sorry to ramble), Joe has just called, telling me that Bob has just purchased Arrested Development for me, and will be giving me 75 bucks along with it. Not to say that this isn't a nice present. I'd be happy to receive that any day. Just not from "Bob", who is at our private school only because of the financial support he gets from his wealthy cousins. I just feel that taking approx. $100 from him would be horrible, since he hasn't had a shirt without some sort of hole in it for 2+ years. Sooo...any advice on how to handle this? One doesn't usually refuse a gift, and it seems impossible to do without offending the giver.

Any advice is welcome; I've gotta solve this by 9:00 tomorrow!

Sports Racers don't post here.

They post here:

http://www.zefrank.com/theforum

And if you want to speak to Ze directly, emailing him is a better bet.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Oops, guess I'm less of a Sports Racer than I thought...:(

Thanks for the help, though.

Hi Tunesmith,
In the hope that you are being sincere, and that you are really 15 (in which case, happy birthday by the way) - rather than some internet freako who gets a kick out of this kind of game:

K so.
When I was 15, basically, cash gifts of any kind were a definite no-no. No matter how rich you were. I got a scholarship to the 'private' school (ie grammar school in the UK) that I went to. A lot of kids were a lot richer than me. But I didn't feel in any way inferior to them, it was school, and the main issue was who was smarter (or, cleverer, as we say).
Definitely refuse the 75. Just be blatant - i.e. "no, sorry, I can't take that - thanks, but no." is enough.
As for the arrested development - um.... it's either a social situation, or a CD. I remember seeing them play at my university, 12 years ago....ewwww! If it's a CD, then take it, it's a great, and thoughtful, gift. He is not trying to buy you, he is trying to be your friend. I hope that you can find some kind of friendship with him, but don't feel that you need to - you don't owe him anything. However, although you (cruelly) call him a social moron, your tone implies that you do like him. Don't be influenced by others. Don't try too hard to be in the 'cool crew'. It won't do you any good. Be a social butterfly, take interest in everyone and everything. Everyone has something to give.

Hope your birthday is fantastic!

Asking for advice is hard enough as it is...not everyone is a hardened board-member....:)

Thanks for the help, guys. I appreciate getting some advice on such short notice. Btw, Arrested Development (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367279/) was an extrememly funny TV show; I definitely recommend it.

Jasmina, regarding your PM:

Of course I'm 15! What would I have to gain from pretending to be younger than I really am? Most of the posters on the message boards appear to be 20+, so it's not like I'm trying to be accepted by lying about my age. :D

Anyway, thanks for your comments. I figured since I was meaning to sign up for the zefrank forums, and I haven't been very active in other boards for at least 3 mos., I could kill two birds w/ one stone and get some advice.

discussing our annoyance with the president

*sniff* it brings a tear to my eye to know that 15-year-olds (or rather late-14-year-olds) can write intelligently and enjoy freely discussing politics with their friends.

i fear you're a rare breed, tunesmith. i'd lost all hope for the youth of america, but now it's been restored.

edit: also that 14 year olds get the funny of arrested development

Ahhh...

Yes, one could say I am. I've never actually written, but I fool around a lot with composing. Lemme see if I can dredge something up.
