Ok guys, I will be coming to NYC next week. It is my first time there. I am going with my boyfriend (who is a native New Yorker) to meet his family for the first time!
Anyhoo..... As my guy is a native, he knows lots of places to go, but he hasn't lived there for over 10 years.
My question.... where are some really neat places to go or things to do? What should I not miss?

I had forgotten about UBC.... I love that sort of thing .... Unfortunatley, they are only playing on Thursday nights, and we don't get in to NYC until Thursday night at 10:30 or 11:00 and we leave the next Wednesday..... Dang it all!
But, thanks for the suggestion!

I believe there's a show Wednesday night .... the night before you leave ... I highly recommend Upright Citizen's Brigade, it's a really great deal and you'll laugh yourself silly ...
Around the corner from UCB Theater is the .Chelsea Hotel (www.chelseahotel.com). Go see the place where Sid killed Nancy, where Leonard Cohen wrote about his affair with Janis Joplin, where artwork from now-famous artists hang in the lobby (they painted to pay their rent) ... where Warhol lived cached away for a while.
But other things to do....
Have dinner one night at Candela ... it's my favorite restaurant in NYC and it's not horribly expensive ... very romantic, AMAZING food ... be sure to make reservations here (http://www.candelarestaurant.com) before you go ... it books up. Everything they make, and I do mean EVERYTHING, is absolutely fantastic.
Across the park from Candela's is .The Heartland Brewery (http://www.heartlandbrewery.com/). Cool joint, local brew, neat pub atmosphere. Great for people watching.
Go down to Canal Street to get your authentic ripoffs from Fendi to Prada, to fake Rolexes, to everything imaginable. All on the cheap.
Head uptown to the Guggenheim -- the museum itself is worth seeing for its architeture, but they have some phenomenal originals there that you cannot see anywhere else ... a few blocks further up is the Jewish Museum -- there's an amazing Chagall exhibit going on ... rare stuff, quite impressive.
Across the park on the West Side is the Dakota (72 and Central Park West I believe) where John Lennon was shot.
Go to Macys in Herald Square, and then go up a block to H&M for some great shopping. Two blocks from there is Madison Square Garden (on 33rd and 7th).
Head to the Bowery Ballroom or CBGB's in the Bowery for some loud punk tunes. CBGB's is a hole in the wall and the bathroom will likely scare the shit out of you, but it's well worth seeing ... I've never been intimidated by the bathrooms, but others I've been with have ... it depends on how that sort of stuff sits with you.
Go to the SoHo Grand (http://www.sohogrand.com/) for cocktails one night ... very slick crowd, lots of pretty people, great beverages ... chi-chi. Half the fun is going there and watching the posers. Other chi-chi places are the Library bar (http://www.hudsonhotel.com/home.html?all) at the Hudson Hotel in Midtown, about a block or two from Central Park ... dearest Brittney Spears spent her NYE here I believe ... it's very snobby, be warned .....
Or if you just want a good pint of beer and listen to some racous Irish tunes by the Prodigals, go to Paddy Reillys (http://www.paddyreillys.com).
Or go into Chinatown for some authentic grub.
Carolines (http://www.carolines.com/) is in Times Square and is fun for top name comedic acts ... it's pricey though and there's a two drink minimum.
There's a million things to do ... I doubt you'll run out of things to do before you have to leave ... just do yourself a favor and plan out your time. This city has a remarkable way of sucking up time, so that you turn around and the day's over ... make a plan of attack and then go for it ... enjoy! It's a wonderful city.
