the real-person cafepress type spammer is the result of the popularity of "the show", i'm guessing. although it still seems crazy to me that this many people would simultaneously get the brilliant idea to drum up business for their get-rich-quick scheme by registering and posting on message boards. surely cafepress is sending out mailiers suggesting this form of advertising.

the others, the bots, i think is from an onslaught of spammers who have figured out how to effectively automate this kind of invasion. there's another board where i've posted for years and years, but before a few months ago we'd never had a spambot. now suddenly they've been registering every day, waiting a week or so, and then hammering that forum with spam. the behavior is so similar to the bot activity here, as well as the timing, that i have to think that it's simply the result of some low-ethics individual who has finally figured out how to make forum spamming work effectively.

i'm acutally spending more time deleting spam than posting.. i log on with my mobile phone at work just to delete spam.. then when i get home and check again all i see is more spam. and a full PM box of people telling me there's spam.. i keep my pm box full most of the time :eek:

What if there was a forum created just for spam - could there be some way to identify it by the CAPS and direct it all there automatically, and then nobody has to look at it unless they really really really feel like shopping? Or am I just dreaming in Technological Lollipopland? Because these stupid things are getting views, if not replies, so obviously somebody is interested enough to click on it, thus encouraging more spam.
Introducing a captcha at the very least is a good start, though!

our tireless modernators frieda and zenbabay i applaud you and i know i'm not alone in so-doing. however i think it's time you were given help from ze +/or supportandcomfort and empowered with whatever additional modernating privileges will enable you to take stronger measures, for example blocking ip addresses and deleting accounts of single and repeat jam toasters. hopefully we can achieve at least partial eradication of this nasty infestation of jampots and tedious cafepress t-shirt vermin idiots (o how they insult our intelligence by carefully choosing breads of 1000+ toasts to toast their lame toasts in so as to get maximum exposure for their ugly, self-referring link sigs) and erase any obvious jampot & jammer usernames as soon as they sign up - before they even toast if necessary.
