View Full Version : help me renovate my kitchen < 450,- euros

and < 450,- means IKEA.. any specialists out there with good advice? my house is small, so i'd probably go for light colors, right?
i'm only replacing the doors for now, not the cabinets themselves.. i cannot use the cute window-doors because IKEA does 72 or 90cm and my upper cabinets are 59. shame. maybe when i get my taxes back. or maybe i should replace them now and do it anyway.......
the design-- i'm thinking ÄDEL white, maybe ÄDEL yellow-white, but that's the same color i have now.. maybe ABSTRAKT shiny white? but that might scratch easily! or maybe something else entirely? i have some 60-70's-look stuff so i'm probably going to work with rough sturdy metallic door handles like these.
my work surface and the floor (laminate) have this pattern:
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/9227/worktopbeechdr7.jpg
so most of the wood doors would look weird.. and maybe too dark in my small living room. so what should i pick?? any suggestions??
thanks :)

I'm thinking sequins.
Purple ones.

ahh brightpearl, how nice of you to offer to help sticking all these sequins on my kitchen doors :D
IKEA doesn't have bamboo so that's not an option.. would be cool though. they have a bamboo floor which i like very much. weathered grey.. hadn't thought about that.. hmmmm.....
gaaah! i'll take a picture of my kitchen/living room tonight when my camera's batteries are charged.. thanks for the ideas guys :)

and yes i have to clean everything up :p

^^looks pretty organized to me :p
but you haven't seen my kitchen! a perennial wreck :(
agree with you that shiny-white would probably scratch - what's the reason you're replacing the doors? are they old and broken, or do you not like them any more?
your kitchen is pretty small so you're right, you do want to stay with light colors - a light wood (IKEA birch veneer?) wouldn't darken the room that much. do you have kitties or dogs that might scratch it up?

Maybe a chalky weathered white?
You could do a lot with door pulls if you decide to keep the fronts.

Too bad the glass won't work. That would be so cool and airy.

the biggest reason i'm renovating my kitchen is that horrid dishwasher door panel. i got the dishwasher from my uncle & aunt, this is what their old kitchen looked like.
i tried to find the same door panel or one comparable to the ones i have now, but it turned out to be a home-made kitchen and a matching door is nowhere to be found :(
so then i went to ikea and their ÄDEL yellow-white design turns out to be only slightly darker than the current color of the cabinet doors:
http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/8243/deloffwhitexp5.jpg
so i could replace the bottom doors without having to replace the top ones. in theory. for 186 euros. i really want to replace the top ones too, that's 450 (total). and with the glass doors, about 150 more. if i take a different color, i can't do the bottom first and then the top!
i tried the birch veneer, but it looks weird with the worktop.. i liked the birch too!
trish, i dig those chrome deco door pulls! that's exactly what i'm looking for! :)

^ ack-- unexpected exposure to fear stimulus
i just saw this: http://www.akamsterdam.nl/index.html
if i had the cash, i'd go for this one with red worktop:
http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/594/americankitchen4ocx3.jpg
that's a genuine American Kitchen by Raymond Loewy, very nice restoration job! but i guess 3000,- is a bit off-budget :p

We had that countertop, slightly deeper red, in the house where we lived til I was 8. I think I'd be very happy in your kitchen.

been haggling big kitchens today-- i went just to look around and practise my haggling skills but i found one i actually liked!
it was also my best haggling score: 7398,- to 3250,-
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/598/clatpietzwartkf9.jpg
http://img465.imageshack.us/img465/2442/cladpietzwartsd7.jpg
now if i had 3250 euros, i probably would have bought it, i chose the same setup as i have now, but with 2 window doors on the top left of my kitchen. i dig the granite top with the sink!

rebuilding the kitchen day 1:
well, day 2. on day one (yesterday) i got the first load of cabinet doors, all the bottom ones. color is IKEA STAT white, doorhandles GILLA:
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/5466/gillahandvatnn6.jpg on sale for 1 euro a pair! woo hoo! :D
then i forgot the hinges. then i went back and got 2 pairs of hinges.. only one pair short.
so i went back to IKEA this morning and got the other pair of hinges, and a tap, because, i thought ffs, my old tap is too low to put anything under.. and since i had to clear out the sink cabinet anyway, better do it all at once, right?
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/9396/bagviktk1.jpg
so i now have 3 door panels and a tap installed. the drawer that i bought didn't fit, and neither did the rotating shelves for the corner cabinet. i'm going to return those later this week.
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/5042/keukendag1ac9.jpg
1: gap between the dishwasher panel and the sink cabinet door is too wide, very strange. panel is the same size, but suddenly there's a gap..
2: IKEA drawer doesn't fit. going to try and get a new one..
3: new tap, and it's working, YAY! :D
and yeah i do need to paint all the yellow bits of the kitchen.. maybe later :p

I like the hardware and the new tap!!! (I love Ikea. We have three near us all less than an hours drive away.) I never get everything I need in one trip to complete a project. Good luck finishing up!!!

thank you! :)
i do have another cunning plan, milord.
i'm going to use a red frame under and on top of the upper cabinets.. what's that thing between the red arrows called in english? it hides the lamps under the cabinets.
http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/5848/sierlijstso7.jpg
it should add a little color to my kitchen.. right? :D

what's it called in Dutch?

under cabinet lighting fascia? In red.
That's a great idea!

It will look great!! I have two in my kitchen - one over the sink and one over the stove both in red from Ikea and they've been there for 12 years. And they are also very low maintenance lighting. I've changed the bulbs four times. The red under-counter lights also match my 12 year old red counter-top!! RED ROCKS!

^ no, unfortunately not.. i decided to completely replace the upper cabinets with new ones instead of just changing the doors.. if i'd just done the doors it would have been.
now, the total for the cabinets was EUR 729,- and i also decided on buying a new tap and new lighting for inside and under the cabinets.. so in total, it's going to be about 950,- i think!
thank goodness for tax refunds ;) :D

^ oh goodie :D
the refunds-- it's all money that i got back for my medical trouble, here we can claim everything that wasn't covered by health insurance and you get 30% of that back..
so in reality i spent over 3000 euros last year on my healthcare that wasn't covered by insurance!
i probably shouldve saved it up for this year.. but hey, a new kitchen is much better :D
