Gummo is a masterpiece. It's hard to believe that Harmony Korine was 24 years old when he wrote and directed that movie. It will knock your socks off ! Or you will hate it. I have yet to find someone who has a wishy washy opinion about it.

So let me get this straight; Tanya is broken hearted over Chook getting head from Rose Biggs, so she goes off on her honeymoon without him and sleeps around. Works for me.

Gummo is a masterpiece.

It's been added to my queue. :) Just from seeing that bit of it, I'm very surprised that it was done by someone so young. Looks like Wes Anderson on brilliancy steroids. And I had to laugh about the bunny hat since I posted a picture of you wearing something similar in your birthday thread.

Tunes, that was the last scene...sorry! Perhaps we should institue a spoiler warning policy?
Lost in Translation...the pacing seems off until you watch the whole movie. For the first half, I couldn't figure out why everyone thought it was so great, by 2/3 through I thought it was pretty good, and by the end, it was one of my top 5. I watched it again the next day.

Young Frank...my favorite exchange:
"Could you help me with these bags?"
"You take the blond and I'll take the one in the turban."

Snake, I'm just making an educated guess. Sofia C has a strong not-telling policy, and I won't tell my guess, either. :D I loved that he says something you can't hear. It's Schrodinger's cat.

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. There are other clips I'd rather post, but this is the only one that seems to be available. It was made in Soviet Georgia, and is variously called Repentance, Confession, or Pokayanie. The symbolism is pretty thick, so it's best enjoyed with someone who knows quite a bit of Sov/Russian and world history, as well as literature.

I watched it the day after seeing Japanese Story which was effectively the same story but told in overstatement rather than understatement so at first viewing I was underwhelmed. Then I was lucky enough to catch Lost on cable for a second viewing and whoa.............'More Than This' will never be the same again.

ugh..IE won't allow me to embed. pfft :( Normally, I am not a chick flick movie type..and this has got to be one of the originals ( 1935 ) . I discovered it late one night on a classic movie channel and fell in love with the concept. It is actually a remake of an even earlier movie from a novel by George L. Du Maurier. It stars a very young Gary Cooper as " Peter Ibbetson". <object width="425" height="350">

my favorite director, Luc Besson. I saw him once at a special screening for one of his movies. He told us he was very moved by the loyalty of his fans in America because in France he's not as appreciated. He's a very sweet man with a lot of funny stories to tell...one of those people that you just meet and become instantly comfortable with them, like if you've known them all your life.

^ the most amazing parts, oddly enough, were in the silences rather than in the sound. during the part where ashitaka enters the domain of the great forest spirit and he senses the presence of the deer-form, the soundtrack just plummets into silence. and everyone in the theater sat with suspended breath as the forest spirit entered the scene and i swear every hair on my body stood on end. it was awesome.

The short (30") movie that inspired 12 monkeys. It is composed of a series of still photographs with the voice of a narrator, and a soundtrack. Pure and blissful minimalism.

Watch the full movie, you won't regret it:

^^ I saw this in college and it changed my life!

then I saw 12 monkeys much later on and got a whacking great case of deja vu until I could sort it all out in my mind.

I was trying to work out how a movie could inspire monkeys, and exactly twelve of them at that.

Chris Marker's "La Jetée" (1962)

Amazing.

The images and audio work so well together, create a real impression of movement. (Sort of like that audio rabbit thing you posted a while back...) I didn't see a clip of the French version anywhere -- how does the English narration style compare to the original? I thought the English was very effective, sort of detached and old-fashioned, yet poignant somehow. Really spectacular, thanks for posting.

now don't get me wrong, i love me some michel gondry. but it occurred to me as i was leaving the theater that "the science of sleep" only passes as a light, fun comedy because the lead role is played by a very very, veryveryvery attractive man.

note to self, add gael garcía bernal to the "hot guy" thread.

anyway, think about this movie again, but in your mind's eye replace bernal with, say, john malkovich. not so light or fun anymore, eh? cute guy = romantic comedy. uncute guy = creepy stalker flick.

on the other hand, i had no such conflicting emotions with this gondry film:

When i do a search in youtube the first one that comes up is a french version. Youtube knows to cater to the locals ;)

la jetée version française (http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=ClvTYd4XnEc)

I'm used to watching it with a French narrator, who is great. I'm glad they found such a good one for the English version too !

brightpearl
06-21-2007, 09:14 AM
Thanks! The English version definitely approximates the style of the French. How refreshing that they didn't fuss with it. When you think about it, and some other "early" science fiction, like the book Flatland or grandaddy HG Wells, it's really amazing that they grappeled so well with concepts that were relatively new to the arts.

It's likely Gondry was directly influenced by La Jetée, I suppose. I really enjoy thinking about that thread running through film history (and my psyche), from The Jetty to the video for "The Denial Twist" by White Stripes.

Staring at the sea and being the first one in your circle of existence to doubt...what a big thing to do. The ripples go out for a long way, I hope.

This is from an adaptation of a book by Bulgakov called The Master and Margarita. That was a turning point read for me, and I recommend it. SWIFT: Women have not desires, only affectations.

POPE: Indeed, women are but children of larger growth.

ADDISION: Ah- but I consider women as a beautiful, romantic animal who should be adorned in furs and feathers, pearls and diamonds. Apart from my wife, of course, who will insist on attempting to learn Greek, which is so very unbecoming I can hardly tolerate her company at the breakfast table. Why do they do it?

POPE: Oh, every woman is at best a contradiction. And frankly, most women have no characters at all.

ADDISION: Present company excepted, of course.

POPE: Oh! The lady is aflame. And silent. Perfect!

ORLANDO: Gentlemen. I find it strange… You are poets, each one of you, and speak of your muse in the feminine, and yet you appear to feel neither tenderness nor respect towards your wives nor towards females in general.

ADDISION: (With a tight-lipped smile) Madam, I have only the highest regard and purest respect for females.

ORLANDO: I find no evidence of that sentiment in your conversation.

Pope: Conversation is a place where one plays with ideas, my dear lady, though one forges them quite alone.

SWIFT: Quite so.

ADDISION: Quite, quite.

POPE: The intellect us a solitary place and therefore quiet unsuitable a terrain for females who must discover their natures through the guidance of a father or husband.

ORLANDO: And if she has neither?

POPE: Then, however charming she may be, my dear lady, she is lost.

I can't find a clip of it, but there's a movie called The Loved One (link (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059410/) to imdb's blurb) that I highly recommend. It was billed at the time ('65) as having "something to offend everyone." It's loosely adapted from the Evelyn Waugh novel of the same name, and it's a satire about the American weirdness surrounding death. Liberace plays a casket salesman. What more needs to be said, really? Put it on your queue.

Wish I could find a better still.

Last night, I watched one of the most amazing movies I've ever seen: Baraka

To say that it was simultaneously enlightening, depressing and cathartic is an understatement - no other movie has made me experience such a wide range of emotions.

did i inspire you? (http://bulletin.zefrank.com/showpost.php?p=360104&postcount=6) ;)

Just saw this fabulous sci-fi film:

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/322uZ5OO-WE"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/322uZ5OO-WE" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

The last line was possibly the best moment in the entire movie. I won't give it away, but I've gotta say it was tight.

The short (30") movie that inspired 12 monkeys. It is composed of a series of still photographs with the voice of a narrator, and a soundtrack. Pure and blissful minimalism.

Watch the full movie, you won't regret it:

Yeah, I saw it when terence first posted it - that's why I looked into 12 Monkeys.

I'm trying to get my photography class to watch it (La Jetée), but apparently it's "too mentally disturbing" for 'em...

Oh, sure, they can make you read Billy Budd, Jude the Obscure, Anna Karenina, Romeo and Juliet, but you can't handle La Jetée....

This was co-directed by Walerian Borowczyk and Chris Marker, who directed La Jetée up there. It's interesting -- you can really see the influence on Terry Gilliam of Monty Python. Not surprising that he went on to base 12 Monkeys on La Jetée. Amazing that this was done in 1959. I've watched it 3 times, but once I had my eyes closed.

The World Cinema Foundation (WCF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and restoring neglected films from around the world – in particular, those countries lacking the financial and technical ability to do so.

Established by Martin Scorsese, the Foundation supports and encourages preservation efforts to save the worldwide patrimony of films, ensuring that they are preserved, seen and shared. Its goal is to defend the body and spirit of cinema in the belief that preserving works of the past can encourage future generations to treat film as a universal form of expression.
