here's some advice

remove hidden tampons from the pockets of your jeans before putting them in the washing machine.

lukkucairi

^ hm - I've found that the OB type of tampon can take a washing and drying cycle and come out without visible change - must be the shrink-wrap.

of course I've always thrown them out afterward anyway :p

How to Find a Decent Online Florist

All the funeral wreaths and arrangements should be about the same price.

(none of the "there's always someone who'll pay the premium for the premium" at this time)

Brynn
02-26-2009, 02:39 PM
I tend to have the best luck calling florists in the city that the funeral is in and speaking personally to business owners, asking them what they have fresh, when do they deliver, etc. and exactly what can they do for me in my price range. They will usually take a credit card over the phone and I feel better than going through an online florist. Less likely to price gouge, too.
You can google "Yelp" and get reviews of the local florists before you call.

Okay, I am making a cheese fondue for Easter, with chocolate fondue for dessert. Dipped in the cheese will be bread cubes -- some wrapped in capicolla and some not -- and bread sticks. I have too many cheeses though, and I know you're supposed to stick to no more than three for fondue. So someone tell me which three to use, please:

- cheddar (nothing fancy, just a medium)
- mozarella (not buffalo, sorry)
- Swiss
- Monterey Jack
- Havarti
- Jarlsberg

I would love to use the last four, but I'm afraid the fondue police will knock at my door. :o

There are children invited who are sensitive to the taste of wine in food, so I was thinking of this (http://www.metro.ca/recette/183.en.html) recipe, more or less. If they don't like the taste of the beer, well, there's always the chocolate.

this sewing machine, Brother LS2125

http://www.wehkamp.nl/Winkelen/KenmerkAdviseurArtikel.aspx?CC=C06&SC=U0A&KAC=UA1&ArtikelNummer=780370&MK=17005&SM=5#reviews_ratings

lukkucairi
04-28-2009, 02:55 PM
^ I don't know, but Brother isn't a horribly bad name, at least in my experience

what are you trying to sew? it's probably OK for most applications. if you sew a lot I'd invest in a more industrial-strength machine.

I have a Kenmore, and it works fine for most stuff, though it tends to skip stitches in the zigzag mode on slippery cloth - it was about the same price as the Brother - and I sew a lot :p

Frieda
04-28-2009, 03:11 PM
^regular fabrics, nothing too thin or too heavy like silk or leather or denim.. that's way out of my league. just fumbling around with sewing fabrics on handbags & keychains and stuff to clip in my hair. i've only used a sewing machine three times so far!

i would like to learn how to sew my own clothing though, that would solve the broccoli arse problem in a different way than dieting :p

what do you use it for? clothing and such? or for the LED stuff & other random acts of creativity?

trisherina
04-29-2009, 01:20 AM
I don't care what kind of sewing machine you get, though I personally like Pfaff. You could buy me one if you like! And then get whatever you like for yourself. But first read about the differences in AC and DC motors in sewing machines, and decide which type you'd rather have. You'll be glad you did. :) And post a photo of your first project!

Frieda
04-29-2009, 07:12 AM
^:D i'd buy you a million pfaffs if i could! i googled this AC/DC stuff and came to the conclusion that in my price segment i don't really have a choice.. even the 2nd hand stuff starts at 200 euros! so maybe when i get the hang of it and i buy my next machine for totally professional sewing *cough* it'll be good one and i can finally make that red & white polkadot raincoat that i've always wanted :p

brightpearl
04-29-2009, 08:05 AM
^I have a Kenmore, too, and it works well enough. I've even used it for denim. Works fine with a strong needle and a slow pace.

I'm certain you can learn to make clothing. Start with an unlined skirt...they're super easy.

Frieda
04-30-2009, 09:52 AM
well, i made my first little bag with lining and straps just for trying it out and the stitching looks like a million assholes  :D

but hey, at least it's bag-shaped and i understand the concept of boxing the corners and hiding the straps between the lining and the cover. the sewing machine & i just don't get along just yet with all those layers of fabric.. they go everywhere, i'm sure there's a trick to it but i haven't figured that one out yet.

i'm going to try and make another!

mainly I sew costuming stuff - like now we're making the glowing tutus - (and I love the audio in this clip)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0iwzN7g_SY

they're great and they take hardly any sewing at all - (if you wanna I'll post how to make one) - but I have also used the Kenmore to sew a fitted rain tarp cover for this thing:

so your Brother would probably do a lot more weird stuff if you asked it to :D

My 8 yr old son wants me to take him to see Terminator 4. Anyone seen it? How distrubbing is it?

He did fine with Iron Man and Transformers, and that was a year ago...

lukkucairi
06-07-2009, 07:46 PM
it's PG-13, not as terrifying as the first three Terminators

in terms of sheer adrenaline, it's a hell of a ride for an 8 year old, but depending on his constitution it won't necessarily give him nightmares - that sense of terminators as completely unstoppable (the part that would have given me nightmares at that age) is dismantled in the first scenes, though there's a fair amount of death and destruction. the huge robotic human-catchers are damn pretty scary, but if he loves stuff being blown up, he'll love watching this flick. I'd grade it a level scarier than Transformers but not anywhere as scary as any of the Alien franchise.

one of the scariest-looking guys in the movie is a good guy.

up to you, Pearly - I know you'll choose wisely :)

oh, and if you go see Up, take some kleenex - it's a tear-jerker!

i would like some advice in the language department--

in the english language, what is the difference between

purpose
goal
objective

? ?

we only have one word for all 3 of them in dutch so i keep getting confused..

Odbe
06-27-2009, 07:07 AM
A purpose can be something that motivates you to do something, like if your purpose in life is making people happy, or it can be something definite you want to do, like the purpose of this expedition is to track down and destroy the source of that horrible rotting smell at the bottom of the fridge, but drinking milk straight from the carton is not on - that's not the purpose of going to the kitchen, AND it's gross.

A goal is more informal, and it suggests something you're working towards and you're going to get, like some people's goal is to lose a certain amount of fat, except that isn't always one they get because chocolate tends to give a quicker happy.

Objective is more formal, it's an end-point like a goal except it sounds like you're a secret agent on a top secret mission, the objective of which is to obtain a clean fridge by whatever means necessary.

brightpearl
06-27-2009, 09:30 AM
^Yeah, as Odbe points out, the difference can be largely degree of formality.

I would say they vary in broadness/range, too...purpose is the most broad, long-term, like a purpose in life as O and other people often phrase it. An objective would normally be short-term and very well-defined, as for a single, specific event. Goal is in the middle -- it's kind of a generic term. You could always use that one.

It's a small difference in most cases, though. Often you can use them interchangeably and a native speaker wouldn't question it.

Marcus Bales
06-27-2009, 09:55 AM
And another thing: because there are nuances of meaning among the words, native speakers, particularly in this postmodern time of high irony content, deploy the words ironically. An example would be Odbe's "the purpose of this expedition is to track down and destroy the source of that horrible rotting smell at the bottom of the fridge", where the word "expedition" is used ironically, in the broadest sense of irony, to give a spurious but amusing weight to the notion of cleaning the refrigerator.

Similarly, one might say that the purposes of goals are to set objectives.

trisherina
06-27-2009, 11:13 AM
a goal is what you need to get done
an objective is that thing you want to achieve
a purpose is what you want to be remembered for when you die

I know a bit of what type of nerd you are, Frieda, so I am guessing that the definitions you would find of these things in a good project management book would make the most sense to you. :)

Hyakujo's Fox
06-27-2009, 11:14 AM
Goal and objective mean the same, but goal is old english while objective is from latin. This means objective carries with it a certain intellectual overtone making it suitable for situations where you feel there is a strong need to reassure others and perhaps yourself that you have some idea what you're doing i.e. planning a war, running a large business.

still sounds complicated, actually. it`s it a boring book on IT-processes. each process has a purpose, a goal and objectives and if i dont understand them correctly i might file them in the wrong department in my head and fail the test next week

hmm, yes I see on the net people forming a kind of heirarchy like this guy http://vagrasala.wordpress.com/2009/01/26/purpose-goal-and-objective/

need more advice:

i'm looking for a laptop trolley thing to save my neck, but all trolleys are black and manly and, well, plain ugly. does anybody know a brand that sells good and fancy trolleys? or any personal experience with one of those things?

it's mainly for work-home travel, overnight stuff stowing areas aren't really necessary. it'd need to fit a 15.4" laptop, power cord, mouse, small folder for paperwork, umbrella, small water bottle and preferably also the wallet/purse/regular stuff.

thanks :)

((are those wheels the flight attendants used to use too dorky?)) i did buy my daughter a rolling backpack when she was in second grade but she only used it once because all the sixth graders kicked it as they were trying to leave school in a hurry.... I would gladly send you that if you want... ox L, Mo :)

^ooh! also nice giraffe print!

i like those mcKleins because they're detachable from the frame, so if you carry it you don't get your pants all dirty from the wheels banging into your legs. and they have cool colors, too.

the $156 from Mo's site seems a pretty good deal, that would come down to about 185 euros including international shipping and customs & sales tax for NL. the ugly black ones cost approx 150-175 euros here so for a bit more i can keep my sense of fashion.

has anybody ever ordered from that store?

New advice please :)

Should i study fytotherapy & herbalism or acting? Exactly how far does one have to return to their roots to stay sane? How does this returning and reconnecting business work??

Would it be possible for you to try both?

Frieda
06-28-2011, 03:32 AM
that would become a problem money-wise. i can pump all my savings into it but i won't be able to do either one for a second year. i don't think i can generate enough money with my physical restrictions and current job in mind.

brightpearl

Okay. It would be good for you to have enough money to pursue something if you decide it's for you...

Is there a way you can experiment a bit with one or both of them for free before deciding? Maybe call a local herbalist and ask if you can shadow them for a couple of days, or audition for a small community theater before taking classes? They are also often looking for volunteer crew members, and that can be a good way to see what things at a theater are really like, even if your intention is to act eventually.

If you are looking to do this as a replacement for your current job, herbalist would seem more likely to result in income. :) If you're just looking for a hobby, something to make you feel connected with yourself, then do the one you love the most.

I will say you seem to be a good people helper. But does it fill you up or drain you, especially when you're trying to help someone who can't be helped? Theater might be more likely to fill you up if not being able to make people 100% well is difficult for you.

Reconnecting can be a long process. Don't be surprised if things you think will help, don't. In this case, think more about your own self. You should do what works for *you*, and then the benefit will extend to everyone.

the herbalist thing seems to be what i should have been doing all my life, the acting what i would like to do as a hobby. it's weird.

eventually it would be nice to generate money or some other form of income, because my current job is only something i'm only good at when i'm angry. and i'd like to live my life without ulcers and herniated discs and with a steady cash flow, if possible.

letting go remains an issue with my relatives (like my mother and her ass kicking cancer meds depression) or others where i'm emotionally dependent on. what makes it easier with other people is that i don't really experience it as helping, i just do what needs to be done, and sometimes that's nothing.

so my mind loves the acting and my heart loves the herbs :) WEED joke here]

i've sent several inquiries for workshops in both areas, so i'll see what comes out of it :)

thanks :):) *hugs*

Nah. Sounds right from what I know of you. Maybe you should have that way as your tentative plan...and then be prepared to be flexible. :)

Keep us posted!

what am i doing wrong when cupcakes come out of the oven soft and cupcakey, but turn into rocks the next day?

Hyakujo's Fox
11-02-2011, 10:14 AM
ah yes, I think I've heard of this kind of thing before. where you may be going wrong is in not eating the entire batch of cupcakes on the day they're baked. :)

brightpearl

If you're using a mix or a recipe that works well in other ovens, maybe your oven is too hot or has a hot spot. Turn it down a bit and see what happens. If it's convection, try turning the fan either off or on -- the air circulating can cause dryness, but it can also prevent hot spots. Paper muffin liners can help, too.

If you're not sure of the recipe, try one with more oil, or replace some of the oil with mashed bananas or pumpkin, and cover them as soon as they've cooled just a little bit.

Frieda

Tee hee :D muffin liners :D

It's cupcakes mix from a pack, so good recipe and no oil. I'll do some experiments with the oven temperature. Thanks! :):)

- a pipe?
- a CD with really good music?
- chocolates or biscuits?
- alcohol?
- flashing reindeer antlers?
- massage coupons?
- a book about the Assyrian Empire? (with photographs)
- or you can make a calendar with photos of you and him when you were young and for each month/photo write down something that you did together and was cool and you still treasure as a memory of the time gone by

Is it possible to work somewhere with humans being human, and still make a decent living? Or do i have to put up with corporate sociopaths till my pension at 67 years old (if i make it to that age at all)??

I've heard that non-profits attract human beings in the workplace, but the wages are strictly survival-level.
