full moon and little frieda

a cool small evening shrunk to a dog bark and the clank of a bucket --

and you listening.
a spider's web, tense for the dew's touch.
a pail lifted, still and brimming -- mirror
to tempt a first star to a tremor.

cows are going home in the lane there, looping the hedges with their warm
wreaths of breath -
a dark river of blood, many boulders,
balancing unspilled milk.

'moon!' you cry suddenly, 'moon! moon!'

the moon has stepped back like an artist gazing amazed at a work
that points at him amazed.

Barn's burnt down --
now
I can see the moon.

I always kinda liked the folksiness of this poem -- would make a good kid's book -- but now it absolutely makes me giggle with nicknamely glee.

The New Moon

What have you got in your knapsack fair,
White moon, bright moon, pearling the air,
Spinning your bobbins and fabrics free,
Fleet moon, sweet moon, in to the sea?
Turquoise and beryl and rings of gold,
Clear moon, dear moon, ne’er to be sold?
Roses and lilies, romance and love,
Still moon, chill moon, swinging above?
Slender your feet as a white birds throat,
High moon, shy moon, drifting your boat
Into the murk of the world awhile,
Slim moon, dim moon, adding a smile.
Tender your eyes as a maiden’s kiss,
Fine moon, wine moon, no one knows this,
Under the spell of your witchery,
Dream moon, cream moon, first he kissed me.

~Zora Bernice May Cross

PS I love Chagall, Frieda.

"the moon is bright over lebanon tonight! (http://www.kithfan.org/work/transcripts/two/moon.html)
the lebanese moon looks down
shim! sham! shikam!!! cattle explodes!
cow shrapnel drips off trees
cascades into a mothers tear.
poor little boy who goes into battle and comes back dead
or worse, comes back a man.
why don't you warn them moon?
why don't you say duck or scram?
but the moon will not.
the moon just sits there grinning like a corpse at a dean martin roast.
what are you laughing at, moon?
why don't you share it with rest of the class, moon?
the moon laughs knowingly
the moon laughs

I sang to you and the moon
But only the moon remembers.
I sang
O reckless free-hearted
free-throated rythms,
Even the moon remembers them
And is kind to me.

Yes well, clouds seem to have covered the area, so we will have to rely on an artist's impression from now on.

http://www.amateur-all-stars.com/moon.jpg

Here we see the sun, represented by a giant glowing dancing chicken, coming into alignment with the moon, represented by a extremely hot chick in the nude, whom many astronomers have speculated would be totally up for it, standing in front of the moon itself.

So now we want the sun again. Not the spotted ball of gas that browns you like a joint of meat, but the living sun, and the living moon of the old Chaldean days. Think of the moon, think of Artemis and Cybele, think of the white wonder of the skies, so rounded, so velvety, moving so serene; and then think of the pock-marked horror of the scientific photographs of the moon!

But when we have seen the pock-marked face of the moon in scientific photographs, need that be the end of the moon for us? Even rationally? I think not. It is a great blow: but the imagination can recover from it. Even if we have to believe the pock-marked photograph, even if we believe in the cold and snow and utter deadness of the moon - which we don't quite believe - the moon is not therefore a dead nothing. The moon is a white strange world, great, white, soft-seeming globe in the night sky, and what she actually communicates to me across space I shall never fully know. But the moon that pulls the tides, and the moon that controls the menstrual periods of women, and the moon that touches the lunatics, she is not the mere dead lump of the astronomist. The moon is the great moon still, she gives forth her soft and feline influences, she sways us still, and asks for sympathy back again. In her so-called deadness there is enormous potency still, and power even over our lives. The Moon! Artemis! the great goddess of the splendid past of men! Are you going to tell me she is a dead lump?

She is not dead. But maybe we are dead, half-dead little modern worms stuffing our damp carcasses with thought-forms that have no sensual reality. When we describe the Moon as dead, we are describing the deadness in ourselves. When we find space so hideously void, we are describing our own unbearable emptiness. Do we imagine that we, poor worms with spectacles and telescopes and thought-forms, are really more conscious, more vitally aware of the universe than the men in the past were, who called the moon Artemis, or Cybele, or Astarte? Do we imagine that we really, livingly know the moon better than they knew her? That our knowledge of the moon is more real, more "sound"? Let us disabuse ourselves. We know the moon in terms of our own telescopes and our own deadness. We know everything in terms of our own deadness.

awake
shake dreams from your hair

choose the day
and choose the sign of your day
the day's divinity
first thing you see.

a vast radiant beach and cool jewelled moon
couples naked race down by its quiet side
and we laugh like soft mad children,
smugged in the woolly cotton brains of infancy
the music and voices are all around us.

How I stole the moon - for Stephi

Ever since I set my eyes on the moon at the age of two and a half I wanted it.

I used to dream about the moon, the ever changing one, the waning, the waxing... but I wanted it most when it was full. Full of mysterious holes, sometimes surrounded with a faint halo. I devised various plans how to obtain it.

When I was at my grandma, I watched cows with longing, expectant eyes, to catch their tail if they suddenly decided to jump over the moon again.
But they never jumped. They just lifted their tail and lazily let out a steaming, yellow stream of piss.

But one warm summer night, when it was a full moon and I couldn't sleep, overcome with the desire for the moon again, I wandered into the garden and caught sight of grampa's ladder, leaning against the plum tree. I started to climb the ladder, rung by rung, just to get closer to my beloved moon.

To my surprise, I found grampa in the way. He behaved oddly, as if caught red-handed doing something illicit.

But he wasn't! He was doing something wonderful: he was polishing the stars. His ladder was long enough and could be extended even more, at will. He taught me to polish stars and - because I was doing a good job - gave me a small star as a gift. I was very happy and put the star in the pocket of my teddy that I brought with me to keep me company in the cold universe.

It was the next day that I stole the moon. In the afternoon I made a papier-mâché moon from the newspapers grampa used for kindling to make fire in the oven. I waited till dusk, when grampa was still sitting on the bench near the gate and exchanged a few sentences with each passer-by. I knew I shouldn't steal the moon, but I couldn't help it. I tiptoed quickly to the garden, climbed to the very top of the ladder and was just able to reach the moon. I quickly snatched it from the sky and exchanged with the papier-mâché one.

Then I hurried back to the house, climbed into my bed, my heart beat so fast... I couldn't sleep. I was hugging the moon tightly, never wanting to let go of it. In the morning I hid it under my bed.

Grampa was looking at me suspiciously. I put on my most innocent, sweet smile and pretended to be busy with my breakfast.

'Papier-mâché moons don't work, you know. No tide, no ebb, no waxing, no waning... the birds will lose their way when flying at night, animals will lose their fertility - the night sky mourns its precious queen.'

That's why I had to give back my beloved moon, but I will remain unhappy for the rest of my life.

:)

and where does the snow come from?

you'll see it out there. there's always snow on the moon. that's why it's always white. white and cold. you have to look very carefully.

why is that?

it's because the moon takes the water out of the ocean. you have to look very carefully. and when night falls, the tips of the mountains attract the snowflakes. but only as much salt as we have in our tears.

it's very far away - you must keep going west. four years in horseback and ten on foot. and after that there are high mountains. they rise higher and higher, right over the clouds and then above the clouds. then you find the snow. it only falls in the night-time. just like feathers. but it only falls from above the clouds.

and then the whole world turns light as feather - and snow white. even the lions turn white. and the eagles. the rabbits get a snowy coat. and all the animals in the world turn white. and when you're walking through the snow your feet don't weigh anything at all. and the little snowflakes go flying up in the air just like feathers.

in a year or so, i'm going to sell this bar. and then go west. and climb up the mountains.
