In English and some European traditions, a familiar is a spirit who takes the form of an animal in order to serve its master. Sometimes it might be a human or even an object. They were also sometimes thought to act as a sort of muse to artists and writers, and were not necessarily evil. The form of the familar was important -- it represented the essence of the master, the spirit, and/or its job.
For instance, this morning, this was my familiar, the essence of my deepest intention, the doer of my bidding.

He's strong and determined, and very good at protecting little badgers, but not a demon.
Unlike the toaster.
Who have you got around you at the moment?

They watch me through windows as I walk down streets. Sometimes, I almost think they're protecting me.
