Stick with it until you get to the sphere part.

Needn't post only science and math nerdliness...I'm an origami nerd, and perhaps you're sent into peals of nerdly guffaws by sci-fi or knitting or heirloom okra gardening....

okay you want nerdgasm?

so there's this video that came out in a small release on VHS in 1997. the record company that owned the distribution rights is no longer in existence (wax trax, god rest its soul) so there's very little chance that it will ever be reissued on DVD. the band responsible has been questioned by the fanbase repeatedly and they've made it clear that the entanglement of lawyers stands between us and a DVD issue.

here comes the nerdgasm:

i found a never-played, MIP copy of the VHS on amazon for $8. hooked the VCR up to my DVcam and transferred the material over to DV. pulled it into adobe premiere (which i had only used once before) and taught myself enough of the interface to get the material imported and color corrected (fixed the blacks. the blacks are never good on VHS, after all). i then dragged out my CD collection and fished out all of the albums containing material on the VHS. i ripped the music anew, then had to edit the tracks to match the special video-only versions contained in the original release. in some cases this meant listening to the release and the album side by side, bar by bar, to match the appropriate measures. i then resynced the new music back to the video (because VHS audio is beyond horrible), and exported. i then installed and learned adobe encore, pulled frames from the video to create artistically accurate menu pages, and authored a DVD. finally i scanned the artwork from the VHS box, patched it up in photoshop to fix the signs of wear and tear, screenprinting, and text. i identified the correct font used by the design house and regenerated the text for clean printing, tracked down logos for the associated record labels notated on the liner notes (and in one case, recreated a clean logo from scratch), and did a little photo editing to accommodate the aspect ratio of DVD clamshells, as it differs from that of VHS sleeves. i printed the artwork off, crafted a version to print on the disc, and BINGO! Footwear Repairs by Craftsmen at Competitive Prices (http://www.gofalldown.com/cacophony/myimages/FootwearRepairs.jpg) on DVD! tomorrow i shall be shipping a handful out to others who want to share in my nerdgasm.

so nerdy, the spouse threatened divorce. ;)

My Mother's family name is Moebius.
I find fractal geometry kind of sexy.
and
I own:

An LED belt buckle.
An assortment of black t-shirts with quirky nerd/gerk/dork sayings and catch phrases. ("No, I will not fix your computer." etc.)
An Atari 2600 that still works.

I just bought a 500Giga hard drive for 20euros extra because I wanted a model that looked like a star wars prop.

I use emacs and latex to do my word processing.

I try to find ways to do batch processing for anything that requires more than 3 repetitions on my computer.

I know over 30 keyboard shortcuts for emacs.

eta: during the end phase of my thesis i watched one episode of askaNinja every day and have now seen the entire series.

I have two undergraduate degrees. One of them in computer science.

I was about to quit my job, until they gave me a new assignment... using Linux.

I have either built, or disassembled and reassembled every computer I have ever owned. Including my Linux box. My text editor of choice, when an X terminal is unavailable, is vi.

I have seen every episode of Star Trek. From all five series. Including the movies. And more than a few fan-films.

I have an extensive, and I mean extensive collection of Star Trek, Star Wars, and Dune novels, and even a few novels from Red Dwarf. I have read the entire Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series.

Back in university, some friends and I had a series of Web pages, the contents of which I hope that the Internet simply forgets about, because frankly, they're so nerdy, they scare even me.

I too own a working Atari 2600 circa 1983, with the wood grain panel on the front (four switch model). I also own every Nintendo console, two GBAs, and a DS Lite. For Christmas one year, my wife gave me a belt buckle in the likeness of a classic Nintendo controller.

I have life-sized cardboard stand-ups of R2-D2 and C3-P0.

auntie aubrey
11-27-2007, 03:53 PM
that explains your first post in this thread. hematite affects mathematical ability. oh, did i mention that i'm also a new-agey-nerd? i check everything according to resonance with bodily/emotional/mental function and which chakra is affected.

we just bought my mother in law a set of windchimes for christmas and before i wrapped the gift i had to ensure that they were tuned to a chakra that rang true (no pun intended) to her personality. i was absolutely willing to exchange them if the chakra wasn't right. fortunately they're tuned to E, which is the solar plexus. which is an excellent choice for her.

and while we're on the subject, say hello to my tibetan singing bowl:

http://www.gofalldown.com/cacophony/myimages/singingbowl1.jpg

it resonates a pure, clear B, which corresponds with the crown chakra. it's one of my favorite "save if there's a fire" possessions.

turns out FOTOVISTA is a website where i just bought a hard disk and the AHOLE who spent 151 euros there is me

i called back to "uncancel" my card 2 minutes later and it was already too late

I lied, I only have four bowls. The fifth one i gave to my father. He uses it to stock his guitar picks, wiimote and spare change.

The choice of background books is not fortuitous and a nerdgasm in itself (Curtis Roads' Microsound and Computer Music Tutorial, Bart Kosko's Noise)

The little ankle bells were bought in Bali, the bowls come from India (Goa and New Delhi).

Yesterday I saw in the newspaper that the local chapter of Veterans For Peace will present a viewing of the film "Sicko" at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 11 at the library. I'm not a fan of Michael Moore's politics but have heard good reviews about this one. Maybe this would be a fun excursion?

Haiku Finder (http://mrfeinberg.com/haikufinder/)

Paste in whatever you like, and it tries to find some for you.

This is my favorite one that it found for me in To Kill a Mockingbird:

"Inside were two scrubbed
and polished pennies, one on
top of the other."

^Fantastic Pearl, so glad you pointed me to it :)

A startling gem from 'The Indian Cookery Book':

The rice will be found
quite soft, and yet every grain
perfectly separate.

Jayne in Firefly's The Train Job:

It's the chain I go
get and beat you with to show
you who's in command.

Actually one of my favourite quotes from the whole series (and definitely the best episode).
