'We can't live like this'
Playgrounds have become cemeteries. Bridges have become battlegrounds. Hopes for freedom and the spread of democracy are dead. Our reporter returns to find a war-torn country fearful that rival Iraqi groups are holding back for the real fight to begin once U.S. troops leave
MARK MACKINNON
From Saturday's Globe and Mail
March 15, 2008 at 12:37 AM EDT
BAGHDAD — Five years ago, there was a children's playground on the flat lot between the brown walls of the Abu Hanifa mosque and the even browner waters of the Tigris River, a rare place for families to escape the incessant turmoil that even then defined life in Iraq.

Who exactly set there soul free?

I have heard: "There is a saint, with quite a large following, who sold hot- dogs at Woodstock"

when you google this song
(lyrics) it says Crosby Stills Nash and Young with no mention of Joni ?? WTF

I came upon a child of god
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, where are you going
And this he told me
Im going on down to yasgurs farm
Im going to join in a rock n roll band
Im going to camp out on the land
Im going to try an get my soul free
We are stardust
We are golden
And weve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

Then can I walk beside you
I have come here to lose the smog
And I feel to be a cog in something turning
Well maybe it is just the time of year
Or maybe its the time of man
I dont know who l am
But you know life is for learning
We are stardust
We are golden
And weve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

By the time we got to woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere there was song and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
And they were turning into butterflies
Above our nation
We are stardust
Billion year old carbon
We are golden
Caught in the devils bargain
And weve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

What Does The Word Trinity Mean?

"What does the word Trinity mean?" is a good question and the answer that you receive depends upon the person you ask. The word Trinity is not found in the Bible, but neither is the word monotheism, theocracy, or the English word Bible.

The word Trinity from the online dictionary means: "a word not found in Scripture, but used to express the doctrine of the unity of God as subsisting in three distinct Persons. This word is derived from the Gr. trias, first used by Theophilus (A.D. 168-183), or from the Lat. trinitas, first used by Tertullian (A.D. 220), to express this doctrine. The propositions involved in the doctrine are these: 1. That God is one, and that there is but one God (Deut. 6:4; 1 Kings 8:60; Isa. 44:6; Mark 12:29, 32; John 10:30). 2. That the Father is a distinct divine Person (hypostasis, subsistentia, persona, suppositum intellectuale), distinct from the Son and the Holy Spirit. 3. That Jesus Christ was truly God, and yet was a Person distinct from the Father and the Holy Spirit. 4. That the Holy Spirit is also a distinct divine Person.

Hmm. I'm lost. Can someone tie this or "thread" this thread together for me? Have I had too much sun out here in the wilds? I'm being far too literal about the way I think about this thread! And are we supposed to post and post and post and tie our own threads together, or do you want me to post one thing and let someone else tie it to something else, like the quotation debate, for instance?

Oh - someone's making gin and tonics in the woods - must go!

brightpearl
07-24-2008, 08:40 PM
Well, I'm a bit lost as well. It certainly doesn't seem to have turned out in concert with my original intent -- which included both the long skinny things and things that are actually tied together (such as nets and all), as well as metaphorical things that are tied together or do some tying (but I was hoping for either more obvious metaphors or more explication). Many of the posts here don't seem tied to anything to me...

But Ysa had a nice string of posts that fell in with what I was thinking of...

From "Clapton,The Autobiography" by guitarist Eric Clapton:

"Ethically it was never a problem for me, and it is the same with fishing. My family and I eat what I catch and shoot. It is fresh and healthy and we love it. I am a hunter; it is in my genes, and I am quite comfortable with that. I also support a lot of other countryside pursuits, quite simply because I believe they are an important part of our culture and heritage, and need protecting, usually from people, who have little understanding of the delicate economic balance of countryside communities and who have watched too many Disney movies."

Background
Southern Hills Country Club was established in 1936 as a private country club. The land that is now Southern Hills Country Club was donated by oilman Waite Phillips.

When the stock market crashed, Mr. Phillips’ fortune was almost totally liquid; it was estimated to be approximately $50 million. He became Chairman of The First National Bank of Tulsa, and he was approached by Bill Warren and Cecil Canary to finance a new country club. They spoke of the need for a family-oriented club that would include a swimming pool, stable, horseback trails, polo field, skeet range, tennis courts, clubhouse and golf course. Golf was not as popular in those days and swimming pools were rare.

Mr. Phillips immediately labeled their ideas as ridiculous, noting the more important financial demands of the day. However, he agreed to donate the land for the club if Mr. Warren and Mr. Canary could demonstrate there was a sufficient number of people interested in such a project. Mr. Phillips gave them two weeks to garner pledges from at least 150 Tulsans for $1,000 each, but he would not personally give them a nickel to finance the project.

The money was raised and the Clubhouse was constructed in 1936. Perry Maxwell, who designed the Colonial and Prairie Dunes golf courses, was hired to design the Southern Hills golf course.

Prayer to Lakshmi

Glory to you, O Mother, glory to you, mother Lakshmi. Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma meditate on you everyday and night.

You are yourself the consort of Brahma, Rudra and Vishnu and the mother of the world. The sage Narada sings your praises and the Sun and the Moon meditate on you.

As Durga, you grant both happiness and prosperity and he who centres his attention on you becomes a recipient of all riddhis and siddhis Prosperity and Accomplishment.

None but you dwell in the nether regions of the earth and you alone ensure good luck, bring to light the effect of action (karma), and protect all worldly treasures.

All the virtues collect themselves where you have your dwelling; with your grace and favour even the impossible becomes possible without causing any nervous agitation.

No sacrifice can be performed without you; no one can obtain any garment; it is from you that one obtains ones sustenance.

O! daughter of the Ocean of Milk and the beauteous temple of all propitious virtues, you are verily a living mass of all fourteen gems with which none else is endowed.

Whosoever hymns this prayer to Lakshmi is purged of his sins and experiences the ecstasy of joy.

There is this house, at the corner I come past when I go the subway. Quite some of the inhabitants of this house are punks/autonomous folks and they have made up a sweet alternative (I saw it twice yesterday) to the more or less plump "Haste mal n Euro?" ("Got an Euro?") method to better the finances:

They let down, fixed on a thread, a tin can on which a toy animal (a giraffe it was) is fixed, such that the tin can and toy are in the suitable height for passing-by people to first wonder, then smile due to the toy and maybe throw in something into the can.

I figure they have the idea from folks two, three houses away. Someone there must have had birthday recently, cos one morning (Monday? last Friday?) I walked by, little presents were hanging from one balcony down to the entrance.

A photo of both would fit here.... as I have none, this must do:
http://www.ntscmp.com/toy_voodoo_sai_wan_ho.jpg

Today (as my pay cheque has arrived!) I will feed the giraffe can :)

Pearl, how's your sea anemone?

Oh!
It's done, and a sea cucumber complete with removable guts. I've given them both away, though, so I can't post pics.

Right now I'm working on a black furzy-wurzy scarf. Crochet.

New Dress a Day (http://newdressaday.wordpress.com/), for $1 or less.

This girl finds some seriously ugly dresses, and she often comes up with something really cute, with everyday sewing skills. Day 223 (http://newdressaday.wordpress.com/2010/07/09/day-223-142-days-and-141-left-to-go/) is quite a turnaround, for example.

I have no idea where she finds the time for all those cocktails. :D

^I know, she seems to go out every night!

I made a few dresses from scratch this summer, but I love some of her stuff so much that I think I am going to go to Goodwill and see what kind of recycling inspiration I can hatch. I'm hoping to find a really good muumuu. :)

PS This is my other new favorite fiber-related blog:

What not to crochet (http://whatnottocrochet.wordpress.com/).

It's ever-so-slightly not safe for work in spots, actually.

Oops, I Craft My Pants (http://www.oopsicraftmypants.com/)

She of this blog is so insanely and variegatedly talented that I'm beside myself with threadly glee. It's not all thread, but it is all worth a click.

This is embroidered. With thread.

This is fascinating. And hilarious. I just love her. And it's not often you find something that could go in either the thread thread or the urgent shaving questions thread.
