I just thought of a great idea for a website...

It would be sort of like those online dating sites, where you complete a form about yourself (your likes and dislikes, your habits, your quirks) and the site searches its database for potential compatible partners...

but instead, this site would be for people searching for a place to settle down and live in - not just an apartment search, but a world-wide location database. You'd plug in your personality stuff, like you would with a relationship site, but you'd also give your job skills, your relationship goals (i.e., if you're married with kids, what the best place is for that, or if you're single & looking, the places that have the highest percentage of singles), the kind of environment you enjoy most, your long-term life goals - and the search would send you a list of locations where you'd potentially be happiest and most productive - and also (realistic) suggestions for what it would take for you to get there and support yourself. It could have links to relocation assistance sites and other relevant sites (like CitySearch and SmartPages, which have compiled info about many different cities, so you can learn more about them before you make your decision), and maybe feature helpful articles... It could be a free site to use, sponsored somehow... (that's where it gets sticky... how to keep it unbiased... depending on which companies sponsor it, it's bound to become a little corrupted.... hmmmm...)

I've never seen anything like that - have any of you? There would have to be some serious cash behind it initially - between doing the research, building the database and maintenance... But think how much time it would save! :) Maybe even let people have better lives...

Tell me about a site you wish existed...

I found something sorta like what you're talking about here (http://www.homefair.com) ... with the community calculator and the lifestyle calculator ... but still not exactly.

Very cool... thanks for pointing it out :)

(I think so many great ideas come from people wishing something existed...needing for it to exist...)

edit: Just checked out the 'Relocation Wizard' on the site Peg recommended - what an incredible tool - it breaks down what could otherwise be a hugely overwhelming endeavor to something doable by scheduling one to three small tasks a day over a couple of months before the actual move...
Now I just need the site to find where to go... :D

I like your idea of the location finder website. Baby boomers would be interested as a retirement planner, if you wanted.

Like you, I am not sure if this exists or not somewhere, but I would like to see internationally linked dog rescue sites, so people could find rescues from much farther away than their local societies, and animals would be better matched to families (the key to good care). An additional link to flight costs would help.

has anyone else tried the Itunes store? It's freighteningly easy to just charge away your money buying music. Very cool, very easy.

We just picked up the Wilco bonus from their website using a code from their Yankee Hotel Foxtrot CD. Now there's a band who knows how to use the power of the net to sell their stuff.
