sounds good to me....I haven't been able to think up one thats good enough...it takes a decent amount of time on my end to curate a contest so the concept has to be pretty tight....feel free to suggest some ideas...

some that have come up:

playing with food (maybe but needs to be a bit more specific, as a lot of food is unrecognizable in a low res image)

uses for old digital media- Cd's etc... (also a possiblity but it restricts the audience to people that have CDs to play with)

dressing up animals (not possible - people tend to take that stuff too far and I don't want any pets hurt.... or embarrassed for that matter)

alternative super hero contest (too vague I think - would require text)

fake crying (I really like this idea - might be a possibility)

any more?

tortilla art

marshmallow construction (building stuff)

why not office super heroes?

and so what if it'd require text? sounds like fun to me!

well i think that the average user on this board doesn't know what computer parts look like.. and maybe there are even some who don't know what pasta looks like. ;)

I like the idea about the uses for old digital media, but you could even go further and include old cassette tapes as well, Lord knows, I could dig up an old Debby Gibson tape, and I think I can dig up an old Whitney Houston CD that could serve no greater purpose than to be entered into a fabulous new contest!

Fake crying! Fake crying! Do it do it do it!!!

Or.. there could be the "Unusual way to feed chicken to ducks" contest!

Or or.. the "Make over w/products found in kitchen" contest!

Wow, I'm really terrible at this!

You guys! You have to stop talking about cheese! There's no cheese in this damn country...just process cheese food. I actually managed to find some of those little round cheeses wrapped in wax that come in the mesh bag. They almost count as cheese, and as close as you get here. I at two and put the rest in the common room fridge. Went to get them today, and they're gone! If these Chinese people like cheese, why don't they sell more of it rather than eating mine that I have to search for? Damn common fridges.

How much longer must you be there? No cheese. No Tex-Mex. You poor suffering thing. This is all character building stuff you know.

I liked the cheese sculpture idea.

He speakth the truth- China is a desert for cheese. Japan isn't all that much better. I feel your pain....

When I was living in Hainan, we had a special cheese man come and make deliveries to our apartment. Straight from Oz- it was the real stuff. Sort of felt like we were making a drug deal- "We need cheese, man! Can you come in two hours?" But it was so worth it.

And these people are talking of sculpting with it.....sigh. I wish.

You have got to be fu$%#@g kidding me!!! I wouldn't be able to survive in a country without cheese, I thought I was going to die when I went to paris and found out they don't have any ranch dressing there!!!

red
10-11-2002, 03:43 PM
NO RANCH DRESSING! EEK! I'm going there in November. I'll have to remember that. I guess I'll have to settle for blue cheese.

zenbabe
10-11-2002, 03:54 PM
Well, my suggestion would be to take some of those packets and make it, they don't have ranch in germany either, so I always have to send those packets to my friends that live there.

I guess Hidden Valley really did invent ranch dressing and it didn't catch on in Europe either.

zenbabe

Maybe that's why the french never win?

Frieda

Au contraire. I do a multiple-day activity on occasion for teaching the use of the words "can" and "can't" with my kids- create your own Superhero.

My requirements for the activity:
1. A name
2. Five things it can do (i.e. Superman can fly.)
3. Five things it can't do (Superman can't see through lead)
4. Something that makes it weak (kryptonite)
5. An arch nemesis (um...evil Superman in Bizarro World?)
6. An image of some kind of the costume (drawing, picture of someone dressed up as the Superhero, etc. Since kids only have a few resources, it's usually a drawing.)

This is my most favorite activity- kids come up with the greatest stuff. One was a hippo that could swim forever, but couldn't marry. Pickled Herring made him weak. (I still have NO idea how they found out about pickled herring).

I really love my job sometimes. Even without the cheese.

well, we know how they squeeze the flavor from the french-- they just surrender

I was trying to come up with an adequate desciption to give poor Frieda some idea of what it might taste like and I can't.
I can describe what it looks like, it's white and creamy, about the consistency of blue cheese dressing without any chunks in it and it has speckles of seasonings. It's very popular and you can buy dry seasoning packets to add to sour cream to make dip for potato chips and/or fresh veggies like carrots, celery, broccoli and little cherry tomatoes. (YUM)
Maybe I will taste something similar to it when I'm in Amsterdam and I can say, oh it tastes sorta like that thing at FEBO.

No, its shaving cream and dill weed. You know that old trick where you put a bunch of shaving cream in his hand and then tickle his face with a feather..well, we didn't have a feather at the time, but we had some fresh dill weed...lol...
