Green
Marshlands
Sticky between the toes
Slimy under fingernails
Drop your head under the smiley serpents
Kiss the frogs
Tap your hip
Melancholy and molasses falling
Katydids and banjos sing from the trees
Smear mud on your cheek and talk to the swamp
Gators are docile
Mosquitoes listen better when the sun shines on the swamp
The air is tasty
Cattails toast well in the sun
Being green is swell

Black:
is it a color? Is it the absence of color?
emits no wavelengths. It absorbs the entire rainbow, swallowing it whole, expunging it.
represents a new beginning: a dark room before the lights are turned on, a dark sun before the beginnings of thermonuclear activity.
licorice.
is the color we wear at funerals. Thus we associate it with death. Other cultures associate white with death, because of the white of bones.
tuxedos and limosines, patent leather shoes and Baldwin grand pianos.

Shades of Orange.
Tangerines or oranges, the rind
artfully peeled with thumbnail, the rind pulp
gathers in the fold between nail and skin, the bitter
citrus smell wafts upwards.
Tracters and bulldozers, men in hardhats, bright flourescent vests of Caltrans workers. Hard work, the smell of asphalt, the deadly rush of cars, the sun.
Highlighters. Late nights spent proofreading in the office, or at school, Roget’s and Websters close at hand. Endless textbooks with lines of words; following the subtle thread of reasoning and teasing out the faults, allowing the mind to digest the mass of information and spit out a conclusion
Wet floor signs, mop buckets, mop handles. Late nights spent sweeping and mopping; being on call for the spilled sodas.
imacs. The dukes of hazard.

black, gray and white constellation of tar, pitch, gravel
Yellow trails of paint, the yellow road, your destination
little shiney black patches of run-over chewing gum
dried blood from the roadkill, a stray feather from
a run-over owl. Black, caked asphalt, cracked
beneath the pressure of truck tires moving goods
from the Long Beach Harbor, paper, gasoline, soda
a million billion commuters rolling through each day,
cracks in the asphalt

Brown:
Pine needles covering the trail on a winter hike in Little Talbot State Park.
Ferns covering a long dead oak tree waiting for Spring rains to wake them up.
A mare and foal I found had spent the night behind my tent on Cumberland Island. Her ribs were showing as it had been a dry winter.
Old bull gator gliding through the tannin stained water in the Okefenokee.
Cypress trees along Billy's Lake, paddling towards Billy's Island.
My wood canoe paddle dipping into and out of the water.
Thrashers flying overhead as I toss the ball for my big dog, Kodi, so named because he is brown like a Kodiak Grizzly.
Brown and white like my little dog Fred. Not so much that as brown and gray. Fred and dirty are synonymous.
A brown blur as Kodi and Fred play Alpha Dog Smackdown in the back yard. They take turns winning.
Cabinet grade plywood as I rip it on the table saw. Even richer brown when I cover it with contact cement before covering brown plywood with black laminate for another countertop.
Vickie's eyes as she reaches for me in the morning light.
Corn flakes in the morning while we watch Scooby-Doo.

Peach and Blue
My mother's house is painted peach and blue.
Psycho colours says my friend.
I agree
And think of gravel crunching
Which was her car arriving
And Dad putting down his violin
He knew he could play no more.
And the tango for two,
Aztec stripes of brightness and joy,
Became for three
And turned to peach and blue.

Taupe
"They say Taupe is very soothing"
Why must hallways always be painted this color?
Why not blue?
Orange?
Red?
Why this "almost-color"
that makes one think of hospitals
of government buildings
and the principal's office.
I swear, Mr. Principal, I didn't mean
to TP your house
just like you didn't mean
to paint your walls
Taupe.
Indigo
Transition between blue & violet.
The colour of my soul.
Favorite nail varnish.
Hypnotising.
Sumptuous.
Wouldn't it be nice to have Indigo eyes?
I had indigo hair once.
And a cat called indigo, but she was tabby.

Grey
Peace, rest, and resignation. The calm before the storm. Grey cannot be destroyed, suppressed, only covered for a while. You can only drink coffe for so long. Eventually, sleep will come. Death will come. Tears in rain. We all have our trials. We all fall down.
Ring-around-the-rosey. Hush-a, hush-a. Peace, and rest in resignation. The colour of the innevitable.
