seems more people than just i frequent the board during the day. however, when the sun goes down the board goes nuts and posts start falling out of zeFrank's ears.

so i thought i'd dedicate a thread to us 8-5'ers wake to the rooster to schlep to the grind stone.

not sure what to talk about, though.... i would just love to know what's going on with everyone.

Sorry you had such a bad time, Beale!

To be honest, it's the people and the attitude here that makes me like it. It's a very multi-cultural city. And there's none of the "we really wish we were Berkley" attitude that Austin can have sometimes. Or the "we're not really in Texas" attitude of Dallas. Houston's attitude is sort of like "yeah we're smoggy and hot and humid and overcrowded. So what. Let's sit over there and have a beer." :)

You tell 'em Judy! Houston is one damn cool city. And in my opinion, Dallas is a loser. I lived there for six years and hated it. It's trying to be all rich, and therefore has no class. And if you're looking for diversity, Houston is right up there with all the other places you think of as diverse. It's not rub-it-in-your face diversity, it's just a lot of different kinds of people hanging out, enjoying a lot of different kinds of things.

So the roads are bad...maybe it's a plot to keep judgemental out-of-towners away!.

P.S. sorry for posting here during your night. It's about noon for me. From now on I'll stick to during your day hours, which, depending on your time zone is 9,10,11, or 12 at night until 6,7,8, or 9 in the morning :)

Yeah, I had a pretty good day. Taught a few classes: passed around some postcards of sort-of famous paintings, tried to get people to come up with complete sentences about them (Mona Lisa is wearing A smile.) Not a bad day.

Hey! Pull out a dollar bill. Look at the back- can anyone tell me what the symbolical reference is with the pyramid with the one eye? Or what the latin phrases mean? I know what E Plurbus Unium means, but I forgot Annuit Coeptis and Novus Ordo Seclorum (New World Order?)

How about the front- the numbers B4 and 12 (printed in San Francisco)? I did a discussion today about the cultural values on a country's money, but I forgot to check these points. Shoulda done my homework instead of chatting on here...

The circles on the back are from the great seal of the United States, both the front and the back.

The Eagle: notice the 13 stars representing the original colonies. The olive branch and the arrows stand for peace and war, the eagle holding both stands for power in peace and at war.

E Pluribus Unim:
From many, one

The pyramid:
Strength and duration. The fact that it is uncapped signifies that we, as a country, are not finished. The eye stands for a divine presence. At the bottom the number for 1776 is inscribed in roman numerals.

Annuit Coeptis:
God has favoured our undertaking

Novus Ordo Seclorum:
a new order has begun

E Pluribus Unim:
From many, one

The concept of the “All seeing eye” above the pyramid is a classic Masonic symbol, but it is not believed that this was intentionally a Masonic symbol on the bill.

Yip. Knew all the other's except for the pyramid, and the latin phrases "Annuit Coeptis" and "Novus Ordo Seclorum". Thanks.

A sidenote- when I told my students about the meaning of the great seal with olive branch and the arrows, it received an "Oh, I understand." sound. Not exactly the sound one wants to hear about their country- "Oh, I understand why your country is a partial war-monger, partial peacemaker- it is a deeply held cultural value."

Amanda:

In 1861 the treasury received a letter asking to add a religious statement to coins. It was enforced by asking the question, if the country were reduced to shambles what power would build it up? Money or God?

The treasury answered that no country is strong without God and that a statement declaring so would be added to currency in the fewest number of words possible.

Our Country; Our God and “God, Our Trust” lost out to “In God We Trust”.

Sort of the reason why I have the discussion- I ask my students to look at their own money (Actually, I have them hand it all to me. Then, I pocket it.) They have to tell me what they can about their own country just by looking at it. Usually, most people can't tell me very much about their own money.

Then I break out my US one dollar and two dollar bill along with my Chinese yuan. I ask them what can they tell me about these two countries. We talk for awhile about cultural values that are exhibited on the different currencies.

Then I have them look at their own currency again now that they've synthasized the idea of looking at culture as an outsider, and turning that critical eye on to their own. The answers become much more detailed at this point- people realize they know more than they think.

Thanks. I was tiring of my moon. I went to a surprise party for my yoga teacher. I had a really good time. I left early to be with my husband. We went and ate at The Red Onion. They serve "Latin Fusion" whatever that is. I call it tasty!
I have to go to a wedding outside wedding in Galveston which, normally would be really nice this time of year, but we have a cold front in that is making it a little chillier than I'd like. I'm a cold wimp. I hate living in snow. I'll play in it, but I hate driving in it, shoveling it, basically doing anything with it that isn't fun.

The wedding was okay. The dj sucked and there's nothing worse than a bad dj to kill a party of any kind. Ya know, now that I think about it, the crowd wasn't exactly rip-roarin' fun either. Everyone was dancing to some quasi-country song and the dj put on Brick House by the Commodores and the dance floor cleared. THE DANCE FLOOR CLEARED?! What was wrong with those people? I got plenty of sleep this weekend, thank goodness! Hope you can catch up on some ZZZs, Deviate!

Friday night I got to hear Richard Lederer talk. He's the author of several books on words and language. He's a great speaker and has quite a rapid-fire delivery. Probably the funniest bit he did was a recitation of "Prinderella and Her Cince", which was a fairy tale full of spoonerisms. The best part was when he told about Prinderella "slopping her dripper." :-)

I played Diplomacy for 6 hours on Sunday - played as England and lost badly, all because I trusted Germany who turned out to be a traitor and stabbed me in the back by invading Edinburgh when he'd promised to help me invade Belgium. Just goes to show you never can tell... Served him right in the long run though as Russia went on to win outright.

last night i watched Mulholland Drive last night twice, up till 3:30A. you'd like the flick if you enjoy being blindfolded, being spun in speedy circles on an office chair, then being dropped in the Sahara while wild rainbow animals that climb down from the clouds scream "boogety-boo!" in your face.

lincoln was a culture shock for me in a way b/c it was relatively clean and pretty much crime free (compared to what i'm used to down here) but i will say that, while the people were hospitable once you got to know them, they lacked that southern charm of never meeting a stranger, know what i mean?

my favorite part of the whole summer trip was hanging out at the baseball stadium where the saltdogs and huskers play... i must've gone to 10 games that summer.... people always ask where i got my saltdogs shirt

i hung out a little in omaha too (to go to rosenblatt mainly for the spikes)

no clue about St. Elizabeth's. very little clue about lincoln in general.

i've been to the college world series before, but that's it for baseball or Omaha's stadium. i dig playing sports but i'm not all that keen on watching them. but love Husker football, though. until these past couple of years they used to play real good ball, real clean and all. now they blow.

The last Rose Bowl when Nebraska came to town was a very interesting week. Everywhere I went, I saw big corn fed people wearing red.(stereotypical, I know. No offence) I have an incredible ability to attract out of towners and nearly everyone of the Nebraska fans I saw had in some way approached me. My friends just laugh. I can't go anywhere with out having to give directions or explain something. Any way I don't mind to much. I was just shocked to find out that their loyalty had brought out so many to S. California. During the Rose bowl time you usually see people wearing the playing teams colors but it is usually local transplants. This time it was obvious that they where from out of town. I had never seen so many people in need of a tan or some sun screen. One guy came up to me (again, because I am a tourist magnet) as I was walking out to surf in New Port Beach and asked, "is that a surf board?". I am sure that he was being funny, god I hope so. I have never seen any one get sun burned to quickly. I surf for about 2 hours and when I past by him on the way to my car wishing him a good stay I notice that his skin was now the vibrant color of his hair. Oh man, I know he must have been hurting at the game.

well, st. e's is a small hospital just off O street, way on the other side of town away from downtown....

and i've never been to the CWS, but had to go to rosenblatt b/c LSU has such a rich history there.... people in omaha came up to me out of nowhere when i was at the spikes game b/c i was wearing my LSU jersey and hat-- they just loved the LSU fans being up there over the years (probably b/c we bought so much alcohol and food that it boosted the local merchant economy)

In fact, you guys, a study was just released comparing the harm of smoking marijuana with that of smoking tobacco cigarettes. Damn it, I can't find it now. I'll keep looking. Anyhoo, smoking 1 joint is the equivalent lung cancer-wise of smoking half a pack of cigarettes. And it's recently been shown to increase the probability of developing schitzophrenia, especially when smoked at a young age.

Don't get me wrong, I support legalization and recognize several medical uses for marijuana. I just wanted to make sure you guys had the whole picture.

If I can find those studies, I'll post them.

NekoPunk
11-23-2002, 01:36 AM
well, sure. taking anything into your lungs that isn't supposed to be there is bad for you. but if you're going to do it.... at least you should have fun, right?

plus, weed is, at least where i've been, more socially acceptable than smoking ciggs. ^_^ just a side note. *lol*

Deviate
11-23-2002, 03:42 AM
i'd rather toke than suck a cig anyday. and most people will smoke several packs in the time they would smoke 1 joint, so, comparitivly speaking, it's considerably less damaging.

i just feel the government should be somewhat consistent. it has been proven that cigarettes is the only product that, if used exactly as directed WILL kill you. meanwhile tobacco money keeps mj away from the public because of what it MIGHT do. and mj has many helpful uses as well, not to mention that hemp is one of the most useful resources we could ask for and we bypass it for money and 'fear' of its connection with dope.

if cigarettes are leagal so should be marijuana. if marijuana is illegal then so should be cigs. and perhaps even alcohol (not that i would dig that in the least). i'm just asking for consistency above all else.

not that anything in the government is consistent.

I mean there has been so many habitual users of all types of personalities for so many years that I find it hard to believe that these conflicting studies will ever change my mind about it. Sure their studies show this and that, but who exactly are they studying? Some people are just idiots and ill to begin with.
