if a guy said this to you - that youve been dating a while, what would your reaction be.
___
540am.
sitting by candle light writing.
watching the sun come up through my window.
went for a walk for a while. waves crashed against the rocks.
reminded me of past poignant moments throughout my life. ive had my fair share of them.
lives come and go. sun comes up, sun goes down and will never fail to do so.
changes occur. introductions get worn away. heavy emotions gets turned into life lessons.
as the sun comes up while i type this note, the warmth explodes against my arm. then my leg.
and now my face.
thoughts and visions dance through my mind and soul.
one is certain in hope.
hope that one day, i will be able to sit on the weather chipped porch of the structure i call home. the sun, hitting my wrinkled skin warming it as it is now, giving my soul a blanket to remember my life. my loved ones. my ups and downs. my tears, my joys. my sorrows and my blessings.
and the whole time, sitting beside me would be you. by my side ever more. always smiling. always caring. always being. the true testament to a life worth living.

First I would be stunned; it is that beautiful a sentiment.
After I could gain my composure, I would tell him it was the most beautiful and moving thing I had ever heard.
Then there would be rewards involved. Many rewards.
If it were my husband, I would check for signs of fever, possession, and or plagiarism;)

I'd vomit. Then MAYBE I'll accept it as foreplay.

It would depend on which guy said it.
Some guys say things like this and they are just so incredibly sincere and you just want to cry, you love 'em so much. If that's the case, it's time to take the relationship to another level, acknowledge his bravery and show some of your own by reciprocating the love and commitment it shows.
Some guys are just trying to get into your drawers by playing your heartstrings. If this is the case and you're smart enough to catch it, a note like this can save you any amount of grief later on.
Some guys are confused and say things like this and later regret it, in which case the kind thing to do is give 'em a hug and focus on the right now and not read too much into it. Enjoy today.
Some guys are just trying out their poetic chops and don't mean a word of it; you just happened to be the person in their life at the moment.
It always depends on the source. One man's "I'll love you forever" is another man's "Take off your pants" is another man's "I want a mommy" is another man's "Let me use you as a mirror so I can admire the effects of my own cleverness, never mind who you really are" is another man's "I'll love you forever".
As with any dealing with humans, your mileage may vary. This isn't intended to insult men; you can substitute the word "women" for "men" and turn the whole thing around and it still holds true.
So, the Reader's Digest version:
Depends on who said it.

Good question, and just how long has Jeez been dating this guy, anyway?

If my son wrote it, I'd smile indulgently and get teary about his innocence and youthful idealism. And I'd hope that he never gets disabused of any of it, though I'd reflect that he probably will.
If my spouse wrote it, I'd smile indulgently and book him a CT and an MRI of the head, but not because he is not given to sentiment: because he is not given to effulgent prose.

while reading it, I was waiting for the punchline.

like everyone is saying: i would question the validity of it depending on who it came from. I probably wouldn't say anything though, you know, go with it...until a few weeks later, when I'm not in such a lovin mood, and bring it up again, and laugh. Cuz I'm a woman, and therefore evil. ;)
No, no, I mean, it's great, really.
*Crud, did I just blow our cover?*
