I was in a sports bar on thursday night. A yankee fan had a t shirt that said the following:

"Get over it, Red Sox. There is no curse. You just suck."

It went over my head. The guys I was with thought it was hysterical.

The Curse Of The Bambino (http://www.bambinoscurse.com/whatis/) is that the Sox sold Babe Ruth to New York for a bag of stale peanuts and an empty beer bottle. Supposedly that is why the Sox never win the Series and the Yankees win every other goddamn year or so.

Personally, I think it's because the Sox rejected Jackie Robinson in 1945. He went on to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers two years later.

But what's cursing the Dodgers is not known.

The Cleveland Indians are just basically fvcked. The Colavito Curse has been cited (a young Rocky Colavito was traded at the height of his career in 1964 -- I still remember my father and the uncles and cousins cursing Frank "Trader" Lane, then-manager of the Indians.). But I don't think that's what it is. I think God just isn't a Cleveland fan, and the fact that they have a racist team logo isn't helping them any with Him. (I still have a bit of affection for Chief Wahoo, personally, since he was the icon of my childhood, but I strongly believe that if a team logo offends a group of people, it's not worth hanging onto. I have been called some interesting names because of this viewpoint, but the scoffers are welcome to kiss my Irish ass.)

what's cursing the dodgers is that we don't have an orel hershiser in the lineup

or anything near as tough as kirk gibson

we just suck ass, but the giants suck worse then we do, and that's all that really matters

Hershiser is one of my favorite people in baseball. Anybody who could break Don Drysdale's shutout record is a force to be reckoned with. I liked him when he played here. And I loved him in the '88 Series.

Mr. Sparticle proposed to me during one of those Series games in '88 and I was so drunk and so annoyed at a temporary lapse of control on the part of one of the Dodgers' relievers (I forget exactly who) that I said "Yes". I think it came out more "Yeah, yeah. Goddammit, did you see that?!?"

And yet I am still a Dodgers fan. :D

heh heh heh -- thanks kindly. :)

He made me re-agree/reiterate the next morning when I was sober, as he was smart enough not to trust anything I said when drunk, aggravated and watching baseball.

He's a rare breed, that one. They definitely broke the mold.

You know how everybody's always saying that the secret to a good relationship is communication, communication, communication? How you have to talk it out, share your innermost thoughts, confirm with each other that you understand what each other has said?

Neither of us has listened to a goddamned word the other has said since 1998, and we are probably the fvcking happiest couple I know. Crazy about each other. Because we're comfortable just being with each other.

If somebody told us we had to sit down and make a real effort to communicate with each other, we'd probably kick their asses for trying to fvck up a good thing.

It's why my Kerry sign is right next to his Bush sign on the front lawn. The neighbors think it's hilarious. Who cares so long as we're happy? :D

I'm going to Boston in two weeks -- I hope they're in the running -- it will be great.

I was in Boston last year during the first six games of the playoffs -- I came home the day of Game Seven and it was so disappointing -- I about cried when I turned on the TV. Pedro should have been pulled. But at least the Marlins won the Series. (Never thought I'd hear myself saying that after '97, but anyway.)

very stand up of you to say, considering '97. but if memory serves, you punked the orioles in '97, and the orioles are second only to my dodgers.

so yeah, i have anti-tribe history

I have a grudging affection for Baltimore, mainly because I am a Cal Ripken Jr. fan, and also because Camden Yard is pretty fvcking cool.

I saw him walking through Tower City in late '97 when the Birds were in town. He was with his wife. The hotel where the players stay is connected to the Tower City shopping complex. I was having a workday lunch at Sbarro and they walked right past my table.

I almost fell off my chair! He was walking pretty briskly and I would never presume to jump up and bother him but it was pretty cool just to see him up close.
