10. You just won the lottery - 100 mil. What do you do with the money?
Have a long hard think about the list of charities I'd give it to. I'd make a public set of donations to underline the fatuous nature of lotteries - why do people play the thing, when they know they are more likely to be struck by lightning, yet justify it by saying "ah yes, but some of it goes to good causes". Why not just give Oxfam a pound? [/rant]

1. Favorite breakfast food.
All of them. Anytime of the day. I love breakfast.
2. Something your friends all tease you about.
Japanese people tend to regard teasing to be rude, especially to a guest in their country. They DO giggle a bit when I pronounce something incorrectly, though.
When I do have friends that are willing to poke fun, it's usually because I get excited over some of the seemingly smallest things. (ooh! Water! Boats! Lemme see, lemme see!!).
That and I'm a geek who gives a damn.
3. Name at least five (more is okay) human qualities you admire and/or love.
Playfulness, intelligence both mentally and emotionally, quick wit, intregity when it's tough, truth to one's self, objectivity, lucidity. Self- reliablity. Adventureness on any level. Happiness. Ability to be tickled. Imagination. Creativity. Perception.
4. High school celebrity crush?
hmmm...I really can't remember. Timothy Hutton for a while. edited to add: I remembered- Alan Alda. I STILL have a crush on him.
5. Favorite radio station(s) - and why?
Same as Peg- I listen to my CD's most of the time, but I'm a NPR junkie when I 'm in the states. Now I'm a BBC junkie.
6. If you could have the career of your dreams, but it meant (through some cruel trick of the universe or maybe a requirement of the career) that you would never meet & marry the love of your life - would you do it?
Four requirements for that supposed "love of my life": right place, right time, right person and, what I have just learned, moving in a similar direction. If those aren't met, then it's a no go. Pure and simple.
The same is true for my "career of my dreams": right place, right time, right mix of people, and moving in a direction I want to go.
I'm not one to marry my work. If I found something that would require that of me, then I would try not to, but in the end, probably would. I'm not sure of the converse would be true for one person- I've given much to a "love of my life" and found only emptiness on the other end.
Live and learn. Or you don't live long.
7. What's your best beloved item of furniture?
My computer, Minerva. She works hard and complains only little.
8. Favorite dish made with beans. (Extra points if you include a recipe.)
Hummus
9. If you could choose one unparalleled talent, what would it be? Why? (Note - this doesn't have to be an artistic talent.)
Nada- parallels are there to inspire us to reach higher.
10. You just won the lottery - 100 mil. What do you do with the money?
Some of that money has already been promised for returning a favor. The leftover bits would cure some ills, pay off some bandits, have a smattering of fun, learn a thing or two and try to change the world (hopefully) to a bit better one than the one I've found here.
Then leave it to it's own devices.
But I think I'll do that anyway, with or without the 100 mil.

As usual - I LOVE reading your answers. You guys are so delightfully interesting.
1. Favorite breakfast food.
Hard to choose. Breakfast's my favorite meal. Currently it's softly scrambled eggs topped with goat cheese & some of that cheap salty black caviar...Orowheat's "Winter Wheat" toast and a cup of strong smooth coffee.
2. Something your friends all tease you about.
I sometimes lose touch with reality a bit... think Phoebe from "Friends", or that chick from "Uncommon Women and Others". Or, um, Spicoli from "Fast Times". (I didn't get called "Stoner" in high school for nuthin'.)
3. Name at least five (more is okay) human qualities you admire and/or love.
Honesty, courage, integrity, sense of humor/playfulness, intelligence, compassion, sincerity, loyalty, gentleness. Patience. Dependability. (Have I left anything out? :))
4. High school celebrity crush?
There were a few... Alan Alda - John Cleese - oh, I had a huge crush on Anthony Andrews for awhile (Brideshead Revisited) and, of course, Sting. :)
5. Favorite radio station(s) - and why?
It's been KCRW (http://www.kcrw.org) for awhile now - a publicly supported radio station that has a number of eclectic music shows, book reviews, regular NPR broadcasts & other interesting things. Usually leave it on all day when I'm at home... unless I'm listening to cds.
6. If you could have the career of your dreams, but it meant (through some cruel trick of the universe or maybe a requirement of the career) that you would never meet & marry the love of your life - would you do it?
If I knew for certain that I would never meet & marry the love of my life, no way. No sense in being alive otherwise.
7. What's your best beloved item of furniture?
A chair and footstool that used to be my grandfather's. It's kind of falling apart, but it's still one of the most comfortable chairs I've ever sat in. I'll probably have it reupholstered eventually...
8. Favorite dish made with beans. (Extra points if you include a recipe.)
Yup. Hummus. (and, I know peas aren't exactly beans...but I *love* Matter Paneer...)
9. If you could choose one unparalleled talent, what would it be? Why? (Note - this doesn't have to be an artistic talent.)
(Why do I ask such difficult questions? Good grief.)
After much rumination... I think it would have to be the ability to make all the kind people I meet feel good about themselves and their lives, and the not-so-kind people want to do things differently.
10. You just won the lottery - 100 mil. What do you do with the money?
Pay off my student loan debts; buy my grandparents a nice, comfortable house; buy my mom & stepdad a houseboat; pay my dad & stepmom's rent until they figure out where they want to live :D; give my friends big chunks of dough so they can relax a little; make huge contributions to entities that educate the public about animal birth control & no-kill shelters around the country; more contributions to arts education and public TV and radio; buy a really nice little Jag convertible & a house in San Francisco. Stick the rest in a bank, have my mom take care of it (she's a bank manager) and pursue my singing career in the way I'd *really* like to. And do outrageously generous things whenever the whim struck me.

Add 1 can of tomato sauce and one can of dark kidney beans. Stir. Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar, 2 tablespoons of sugar, two pabelspoons of pepper, two tablepoons of salt, and two tablespoons of chili powder. Stir. Simmer for 30 minutes, taste and season to your liking. Serve with corn bread
9. If you could choose one unparalleled talent, what would it be? Why? (Note - this doesn't have to be an artistic talent.)
I always wanted to be one of two guys - Walt Disney or Jim Henson. Their talents seemed straight forward but in the end they were talented, not at animation or puppetry, but at managing and planning.
10. You just won the lottery - 100 mil. What do you do with the money?Become addicted to cocaine. Try to impress large breasted trashy women how important I am by purchasing cars and houses and expensive watches. I suppose it has to be the traditional full english breakfast
A full explanation as requested:
The above usually consists of....
Bacon, fried eggs (or scrambled), mushrooms, tomatos, baked beans, toast on the side, and black pudding if you're lucky! :)
With a selection of either brown sauce or tommy K!
Beverages: Orange juice and Tea.
I think that covers it... feel free to add anything DickieC!

Would that be toast fried in oil, Ms. egg? (Something we find a bit strange in the States.)

If I may intervene on behalf of my compatriot....
Toast is not the same as Fried Bread. Fried Bread is not fried in oil but in the fat from the bacon (and everything else). It is very, very bad for you but very very tasty.
Though I am partial to American-style hickory-smoked bacon. If only it weren't so fatty...
Addendum: I was once asked by an American on a train, whilst discussing English Breakfasts, "what those green things were?". This one had me stumped at the time until I realised they meant mushy peas. These are truly revolting, IMHO: they have the consistency of guacamole but taste nothing like peas. There is a famous incident where a British politician, rumoured to be Peter Mandelson, went into a fish-and-chip shop and asked for guacamole with his cod-and-chips. (NB for non-Brits: this probably apocryphal story is told to poke fun at New Labour politicians when they assume working class credentials. Imagine one of Clinton's New Democrat acolytes having a meal in a diner and pretending to be all folksy. Wait a minute, that happens all the time...)
Enough breakfast already. It's 5 in the afternoon.

No, they do have RD in the US now. I think they're even trying to make a feature film of it.

Wow... is it a re-run of our version or have they got different actors?
dickieC

The original I believe. They had to make lots and lots of epsiodes before the US networks would consider syndicating it. And only if it got syndicated and built up a US fanbase would anyone consider putting up the finance for a film.
Right, off to lunch....

it's the original cast. Rimmer and Crichton and the Cat and the prick hologram. They've been running it on PBS for about 3 years. I didn't start watching it faithfully until the last year. Fantastic.

Good grief.
I'd have to get up at 3:30 in the morning to do all that...
How about some nice scrambled eggs & oatmeal?
:p
RuneT
01-29-2003, 01:11 PM
you can make it in 30 minutes if you have some practice, hun! and leave the black pudding. it's really no need for it.
dinzdale
01-29-2003, 02:14 PM
LaLa,
if you really loved me would 3:30 be so bad?
p.s Oatmeal is Ok if you have a leaky roof to fix, or you want to decorate a papier machee sculpture, sorry.
Note to Rune: You speak for yourself - Norwegian brekky is more pickled herring, so leave my black pudding alone - thank you.
Are we ignoring each other today Dinz?

i'll say this-- i saw that oliver's twist bloke making black pudding the other day and i about lost my lunch... now before you get your undies (or lack thereof) in a twist dinz, i also was completely revolted the first time i saw crawfish and was forced to eat them... now, i consider crawfish a delicacy and one of the most charming parts of cajun culture.....
still, black pudding almost makes me yak....

Ho Ho Ho.....a swamp monkey questioning what other people eat...
In BRouge they would eat yak if they found one as roadkill. I once pissed off a cajun when the waitress asked what he wanted for side items and I piped up.."Oh they any old shit where he comes from." Seems he was touchee....
