photography is one of my hobbies. i don't have a fancy camera, i just use a digital compact cam, the pentax optio 4Si.

please post some pics of your own work in this topic, stuff you are proud of, maybe even stuff that's just amazing and pretty!

or just post some nice links to a website with someone else's work. here's a few links that i like myself:

National Geographic (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/photography/)
Ansel Adams (http://www.anseladams.com/)
Ed van der Elsken (http://www.edvanderelsken.nl/index.php?page=fotos)
Anton Corbijn (http://www.corbijn.co.uk/)by the way, to make a photo clickable with thumbnail, use the following code (remove the :'s)
[:url=FULLSIZEPIC.JPG][:img]THUMBNAIL.JPG][:/img][:/url]

you can upload pictures on www.imageshack.us (http://www.imageshack.us) for free hosting.

EDITED TO ADD:
oh yeah, and please don't use other people's pics on other websites or for commercial purposes. thank you :)

I'm don't have that great of an eye for photography. Thank God for cropping and other photoshopping tools. What I am good at is getting out the camera (Olympus 4040) to record memories. The fact that I am much more emotionally invested in one over the other really comes through. Watch.

Damn Frieda, you got some pretty killer detail for a "not fancy" camera.

I definitly don't have a good camera...an old 1.6 Mpix Kodak.

But here's a sunset from my new digs/floats.

A tripod is essential for all photography.
You should be able to get a decent one for little money. They sell some at Wal-Mart that are good. Probably also K-Mart or Target if you don't like Wal-Mart.

Jaime,

Those are GREAT photos.

What's the story on the last photo? Where did that light come from?

Is there anyone on here that is obsessed with bogs?

Because I now know how to post pictures, here is one I took:

http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/1070/dessertspringsik9.jpg

I like the colors.

Jaime
08-24-2006, 03:14 AM
Thank you so much, l'azizza! I believe the light in the last photo is the flash from my camera. I had just come from a really dark wooded area, so I'm pretty sure there wasn't any other light behind me.

I'm a big fan of my bog. It's a peat moss bog, so if you jump on the ground all the bushes and trees move, which amuses me.

I also really like your photo. Where was it taken?

l'azizza
08-24-2006, 04:36 AM
That's nice that the light wasn't intentional.

I know a guy who has a thing for cranberry bogs.

My picture was taken behind a hot springs pool that my sister has leased for the next couple of years. She says that there is a labryinth behind it, but i think she is full of sh^t and just wants me to get lost and die in the dessert.

9/17/06 found the labyrinth. A labyrinth isn't what I thought it was.

I'm getting a sort of evil moth-presence hovering directly over a man whose mullet is on growth hormones.

the "mullet" was actually an awesomely bad rendition of "I'm a white guy w/ dreads".

What ever is lurking over his head certainly has no good++ on it's mind though.

Thanks very much! :D It's a lowly Canon Powershot A520 :) Good for me to learn on, I guess - I went to a photography exhibit recently and realized that composition is really the most important thing - so even though I reeeaaaallly reeeeeaaaaalllly want a more robust camera, I can still learn more on this guy before I move up!

hehehe... I like that. I kind of thought the petals looked like a female flamenco dancer's skirts being twirled... appropriate for a Mojave prickly poppy :)

lapietra, such wonderful images! The first photo has stolen my heart. =) So detailed, vividly colored and rich in it's composition. At first glance, it appeared to me to be a highly detailed photo of an egg breaking, but then I saw that image change into an alien landscape, before I could see the petals.
Inspiring work!:)

Thanks very much - I'm also inspired by that last one you posted - talk about taking lemons and making lemonade! It would make an awesome poster for the band - really psychadelic :D

Beautiful pictures, lapietra. I totally agree - the first is stunningly beautiful.

Incidentally, I've used the Canon A520 for the past 2 years and I know exactly what you mean about wanting something more advanced.

yeah... the depth of focus is frustrating; image stabilization is very very weak - I can hardly take a good pic after it starts getting a little late in the day or in a shady spot, which really bugs me, because I love the quality of the lesser light... One good point is that you can add lenses - but I'd rather upgrade before I do that.

I know it's a pipe dream, because even if they invent a camera that can take good pics at night without hours of exposure, I won't be able to afford it - but I have this fantasy of being able to capture moonlit scenes... I saw some photos awhile back - can't remember the artist's name - but he captures the most magical, beautiful night scenes :o I think I have some around - I'll post 'em if I find 'em.

Anyway - a few more MPs and good image stabilization - oh, and good close zoom - are on the wishlist for the next cam. :)

Not actually a photo, but this is something I made today, in between the meatloaf and the zucchini. I used the Mandelbrot set to make the fractals, and then added a dash of Ms. Hellfire's Secret Sauce®:p

^ very nice

--> made me think of this poem:

Design

I found a dimpled spider, fat and white,
On a white heal-all, holding up a moth
Like a white piece of rigid satin cloth--
Assorted characters of death and blight
Mixed ready to begin the morning right,
Like the ingredients of a witches' broth--
A snow-drop spider, a flower like a froth,
And dead wings carried like a paper kite.

What had that flower to do with being white,
The wayside blue and innocent heal-all?
What brought the kindred spider to that height,
Then steered the white moth thither in the night?
What but design of darkness to appall?--
If design govern in a thing so small.

^That's one of Frost's best. Belongs in the inspiration/futility thread, too, maybe? Reminds me of a Wendell Berry one that is a fave...I'll go dig it up, ha ha ha...

La noche se puso íntima

como una pequeña plaza.

Guardias civiles borrachos

en la puerta golpeaban.

Verde que te quiero verde.

Verde viento. Verdes ramas.

El barco sobre la mar.

Y el caballo en la montaña.

Beautiful, it looks like the blue light at the top is a shining angel. Then it made me think of something I've read somewhere, that in some electrical storms you can see 'streamers' of light rising from places that are about to be hit by lightning.
