A world cup!

craig johnston
06-07-2006, 04:23 AM
jesus! we had people on here discussing the winter olympics opening ceremony in detail ffs!

THE WORLD CUP
is the biggest sporting event on the planet.
it will be over-hyped, thrilling, mind numbing, dramatic, mundane and a festival of clichés.
for all you yanks - yes, the usa have a team, who will not get very far (although they were good last time).
i have more hopes for australia ;)

my tip - argentina (although you can never rule out brazil)

on the other hand, it's being held in germany and has been the subject of endless marketing ploys (world cup biscuits, world cup cornflakes, world cup bog roll et etc) and ridiculous articles for the last six months. enough to drive anyone mad, even a football nutter like me.

it has already boosted the local economy - i've got two well paying dj gigs next week at after match parties.

Yuk, everything turned orange here in Rotterdam. Whole streets make use of the offer of the city to build their own orange street: http://www.opzoomeren.nl/
Third offer, it says "Build a WK tribune in your street and watch the WK with your neighbours"
Godsammekrakepitten, what a waste. Don't they know what to do with their money? We have so many poor people in Rotterdam that a bunch of volunteers set up a "foodbank"

craig johnston
06-07-2006, 04:45 AM
Godsammekrakepitten - well, it's a point of view.

i disagree magdalen, it's not a choice between one and the other. people are crazy about footy, especially in poor places and that's ok. it brings colour and drama into their lives, why not?
i love the nuttiness of the dutch fans (apart from the hooligans natch). it's the only time they seem to be proud of their (rather fab) country.
don't be grumpy - paint yourself oranje!

World Cup Gossip!

Frank Lampard says England's players will regard anything other than World Cup victory as a failure.

David Beckham says his World Cup nightmare would be to face Germany in a penalty shoot-out.

England will be facing Paraguay in their opening game in temperatures in excess of 28 degrees Celsius.

Chelsea defender Paulo Ferreira was given permission by Portugal to fly back to his home country for the birth of his first child on Wednesday.

Arsenal's Freddie Ljungberg says he is desperate to beat England - because he is fed up of getting ribbed by his English team-mates.

Brazil's 1970 World Cup-winning captain Carlos Alberto - who called Michael Owen a "midget" last year - says the Newcastle striker is capable of being a major star at the World Cup.

Paraguay's star striker Roque Santa Cruz says Peter Crouch would be more suited to playing basketball than football.

calm down everyone. the final is always crap and as this tournament has been almost entirely devoid of good football i can't see this one being any different. both teams rely on solid defences and play with only one striker. chances of a 4-3 are slim.
the whole thing has been woeful football wise. england appalling, holland dreadful, and plenty of disgusting cheating, diving, headbutting etc etc. i'd rather go and watch my local turkish team play in the park.
on a positive note, off the pitch it has been fantastic. germany has been one big party for a month and everyone has been walking around smiling

Dam that guns never looked so tasty...

dumb comment of the century award winner. hands down.

ok, well gary, it was a game of two halves. one half was called 'football' and involved a lot of cheating, diving, spitting, headbutting, defensive tactics and sheer boredom. whatever was said to zidane his action was completely indefensible and incredible in the circumstances. it only highlighted the shadow side of this tournament.
the other half was called 'not football' and was represented by thousands of people out in the streets waving flags, singing, dancing, setting up impromptu parties, smiling happy berliners welcoming foreigners and all kinds of unheard of things. it was wonderful, it was exciting, it was uplifting, it was everything that the football wasn't.
i'm saving up to go to south africa next time.
