New Q (a two parter - don't ask me how that got connected in my brain now ;)):
¿ Your favourite cheese ?
¿ Your relationship to porn (*) ?
(*) Not talking about child porn, snuff etc - that's crime, no porn.
Me:
Fol Epi
If it's good one I see it as art (particularly in form of comics, photography), in general: like cooking recipes - possible inspiration, but no guideline, can't / don't want to cook after recipes.
¿ Your favourite cheese ?
 WAY too personal!!
¿ Your relationship to porn
:) a nice strong mature one, you know, that actually hurts the roof of your mouth because it's made with unpasteurized milk, danish blue for example

cheese porn (http://www.cheeseontour.com/xxx/)
(from the masterminds behind cheese on tour, the web's number one site for pictures of cheese in famous places.)
personally:
I do not have a favorite cheese - I love almost all cheese - even the scary-smelling limburger-types
http://www.preston.gov.uk/Images/General/Parks/wallace_and_gromit.jpg
(^scary-smelling limburger-type)
as to pr0n, I get enough inadvertent exposure via odd unfiltered google searches of completely unrelated subjects to feel that I'd never have to go searching.
for example, when googling "wallace" to find a hotlink for the above image, I ran across no fewer than two naughty pictures on the very first page of returns. I mean, "candi", you'd expect, but "wallace (http://images.google.com/images?q=wallace&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi)"?!

One of my friends in France works at the RATP (french metro company). He was working with an old train technician one day, and needed to access some files on the hard drive of the office computer.
My friend was slightly befuddled when the technician told him that he would find the information he needed "in that suitcase." He ended up understanding when the guy pointed his finger at a folder on the desktop of the machine in front of them, and said - "Right there, in that suitcase".
This story really made me laugh, and ever since I name all of my disks "valise", "briefcase" etc...

my old laptop is Euclid, as I bought it right after seeing Pi for the first time and I was unprepared for it to ask me to name it.
I don't tend to name my machines (computers or cars) - I don't see them as separate entities, but more as just extensions of myself.
this one is now simply "the PC", aka "goddamn stupid fukken windows"
the other one is simply "the mac", aka "perennial RAM shortage"
the third one is "the work machine", aka "don't you dare save that to my hard drive - are you trying to get me fired?!"

My current compie at work has the official name theo26 (this is so boring, decent workgroups name their compies after Greek gods/heros or stuff like that, at least our master nodes are named after chemical elements), but I call him "Babe" on good days and "blöder Pisser" if he behaves like one, let the KDE crash for example (he does that ON PURPOSE!!!). My old home compie (an antique thing from '98, my very first own compie), meanwhile passed from the processing :(, was named HAL, simply HAL, no number, no pet names, no cuss names, I miss him purring like big, happy tomcat...
decent workgroups name their compies after Greek gods/heros or stuff like that, at least our master nodes are named after chemical elements),
My network has names from Egyptian mythology, but chemical elements are pretty cool!!
My own computer is Nephthys, Egyptian goddess of the underworld. The wireless is Nut, goddess of the sky. The computer with zillions of coloured LEDs in its case is Amunra because it's so bright, then there's a couple more Egyptian gods/goddesses.
I give names to most of my technology, I think it makes things easier, especially when you want to eject a USB something and you can't remember if it's E or F or G or whatever.
My mp3 player is called Sheep because it's black and is a black sheep, going against the trend of iPod brand mp3 players.
My first small thumb drive is called Thumbellina.
Then I got one with more space and called it Tomb Thumb, but it got appropriated by my mother and lost among my relatives.
So I got a third one and it says 'Soniq' on the side, so I called it Tails, after the cartoon character.

This is such an excellent question that I fear I'll never do it justice.
Well, I expect the crab has no idea it's a crab or that it lives in water, so I guess it wouldn't be thinking of that. Perhaps it would be thinking about how, even as it shreds and eats this lovely bit of decayed herring, it is hungry. It might spot a boy crab and fancy a bit of shell without understanding why. And it might be thinking of needing to find a place to hide, again for reasons it doesn't understand, except when it's actively being threatened.
Pretty much like being a person, actually, with the possible exception that Froot Loops are harder to come by.

OK, I'm a masochist from the Caribbean - I put hot pepper and lemon juice on EVERYTHING :p
even my throat after I had my tonsils out at age 31 - weirdly the pepper really helped a LOT - I think it reset the pain sensor nerves in my throat or something, or gave me a local endorphin rush, and wasn't that hurty to drink to begin with.
of course your Netherlands locals might frown on such a practice...

cottage cheese (if you don't have that, i hear quark is a good substitute)
yogurt or kiefer. mmmmmmmmm kiefer.... *drool*
and to make sure you're getting all of your vitamins and nutrients, i highly recommend the "green drink." it's really delicious and super good for you:
2 apples, cored
2 big handfuls of spinach
1/2 cup of chopped parsley
1 celery stick, chopped
1 thumbnail length of ginger root, peeled
1 lemon - juice only (use peel slice for zest)
1 medium cucumber
blend all of the ingredients together and enjoy. add some apple juice if it's not sweet enough for you.

Lulu, cayenne is a common folk remedy for sore throats (http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/sore_throat.html)...I use it all the time. :) The capsacin shorts out the pain receptors in short order, and then they need time to recover before they send you hurty messages again, hahaha. They even put it in some arthritis creams -- my granny used to use it.
And auntie, that sounds really yummy...I got a new blender for my birfday and will have to try it!!
AND...I am broke, so if anyone wants to kick into today's soft food ideas question with ways to dress up Ramen ideas, feel free.

oh this sounds nice-- i've been eating fruit from the blender mostly, apples, pears, bananas, pineapple and strawberries, never thought of tossing in some veggies-- don't you still have to chew on that? oh i'm going to try anyway :)
for ramen:
szechuan: soy sauce for the wok, garlic, sugar, chopped bell peppers (red & green), leek, spring onions, corn, corn starch to make sauce thicker, bean sprouts and something we call "sambal" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambal) which is very spicy. use sambal oelek for this sauce.
sweet & sour: soy sauce for the wok, garlic, some thick tomato sauce, corn starch, green pepper, white pepper, ginger and lemon juice-- also nice with bamboo sprouts, chopped cucumber, bell peppers and leek

depends on what you mean by stuff and thing. if it's a manmade thing i've got some pretty old books. but if you're using stuff and thing to mean anystuff and anything, i'd have to say my rock collection. they may have been dug up and polished recently but the minerals themselves have been in existence since long before you or i or any of our ancestors dreamed of digging that hole in the ground.
and actually, since everything we're made of originated in the heart of the big bang you could argue that everything is just as old as everything else. just maybe in different shapes.

the oldest human-made would be a bit of flint debotage from an acheulean hand ax created by Homo spp. ca. 1 million to 100,000 years ago. it was lifted from its native sediments by one of my husband's ancestors sometime in the late 1800s without decent records being made, and as far as I know there's no way to tell exactly how old it is, but it's in the six figure range fer sure.

That would be
the ring (red gold with rubies) my grandma got as gift (and given me later on) from the antique dealer she used to for for as housemaid when she was 14 (that is in 1950), he told it'd be ca. 200 years old, so now it's 250+ years old
a (popular science like) chemistry book from around 1860, that came via my father to me from his father who collected old books, particularly scientific ones (although being a gardener - this science thing's gotta be in our blood somehow ;))
the German-Russian dictionary (printed in the 60s or so) I found in the backyard when I moved here to Berlin (the house stood empty for several years till 2004, there were lots of interesting things in the backyard!)
the socialist (i.e. GDR-made) gas hearth in my kitchen (that dude who fixed my phone extension saw it, stood a while gaping in front of it and then said something like: "Wow, we used to have that on back in the 70s. It still works?!" - it does :))
the Czechoslovakian coins and bills (printed in the 1980s) from our first trip through the Iron Curtain to Prague when the borders opened
my first computer and mobile phone (both from ca. 1998/99) - not as monstrous than such thingies from the 80s but still impressive ;) (the phone is flashy yellow, one to clap open and it has a display like a hand-calculator - it was even weird in '99 :D);

the inclusion of pomegranate and grapefruit on the "untasty" side of the graph makes me doubt the researcher's qualifications. while the pomegranate certainly qualifies as the most difficult fruit, the tactile sensation of eating pomegranate seeds is one of the best fruity experiences one can have. one could say, if one were a qualified fruit expert (as this person obviously is not) that the tactile nature of the pomegranate is far more important than any discussion of flavor.
the chart was obviously drawn by a fruit school dropout. or an undergraduate at a state fruitiversity at best.
it may be that what's meant by "tasty" is the relative strength/powerful ness of each fruit's typical taste in comparison to the others

au contraire, ma soeur, I beg to differ.
The observation of this graph makes me think that it could well be a multi-dimensional representation of study on fruit, where different subjects were asked to group/rate fruits according to their tastiness, difficulty, tartness, sugariness etc...
The fruitist collected the information and organized it into a space map reflecting distances between the said fruit according to two of the dimensions studied in the test, i.e. "difficulty" and "tastiness".
I am not surprised to see bananas on the untasty side. Though many people love bananas, myself included, I know at least two people who HAT bananas and cannot even stand to be in the same room as a banana. It only took a few people with very intense judgements to bring bananas down below average, even though a large majority of people like bananas.
In light of this it is my opinion that this fruitist is well on his way to becoming a Master of the fruit.

Stephi, I found it browsing somewhere and thought it so weirdly beautiful that I followed the links to the original site (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/flash/photo/visitorsguide/2005-04-15_nmoah/index_frames.htm?startat=1&indexFile=visitorsguide_2005-04-15_nmoah), which is a Washington Post slideshow of the historical photograph collection at the National Museum of American History. It's a great slideshow -- click on start slideshow and then click on the little "32" at the bottom if you want to go straight to this one and find out what it is.
A couple of you guessed it. I had thought it was a drawing, too, of the birth of a star, maybe, with an earthly horizon as setting. There were echoes of aliens and navel oranges for me, too.
I like that it seems sort of fun when you first look at it, if you don't know what it is. It's good to have an open mind when you first think about anything. Power is just power, after all, and it can either drive all life on our planet or destroy it. The devil is in the details.
I actually didn't mean to get all philosophical in the qotd thread...my thinking about it grew from seeing the responses. Thanks for playing...

Are you a random shuffler or a pre-programmer?
YsaPur EsChomuw
05-23-2008, 10:24 AM
a methodical postponer
both. i preprogramme first and that's done strictly according to various mood-criteria i've developed over time. then, only after that's done will i sometimes randomly shuffle within this preprogammed ness i've made. but of course there are also frequent occasions when original running-order must be observed.

I agree that some things should never be shuffled. But having said that, I do shuffle constantly in order to hear as much as possible and not to get into a ditch. I like the surprises.

I'm a shuffler in Windows or on portable players, but a pre-programmer in Linux.

I get irritated at people who pre-program, so probably I lean toward that category.
Bit of a shock, really. I must re-double my efforts at learning to shuffle.

Neither shuffeling nor pre-programming -- since I've lost me mp3 player :(
Anyways I'm a lazy sod -- although I've inherited the magnificent mp3 collection (all of Pink Floyd and Bowie, and I mean ALL, Depeche Mode, Piknik, Zemfira - all the cool Russian thingies) on Vanya's compie, got some stuff collected myself and know where the folks with taste at work got theirs saved -- mostly listened radio with it (pre-shuffling kinda ;))
When listening music at home I don't shuffle songs, but hear through the whole albums; but I vary the combis (sometimes kinda weird things, Trentemöller followed by Ukrainian folkpunk followed by Nina Simone - my neighbours have not complained so far though :D).

Too many goals! Everything's happening at once!
eta: interesting you should ask this question because last night I sat down at my desk and made a list of the most prominent goals/projects in my life at the moment, the things stopping me from achieving them and some small actions I can take to move them along.
Turns out most of my craft projects are waiting on me to go second-hand shopping.
