It's very important to do it properly so's you don't hurt your own self.

Or perhaps I'm just talentless. :o

But I'm told that it's important to be sure you spread it around a lot and don't try to aim it all at just one person and to grow suspicious if you don't notice it coming back around.

Absolutely! I just feel that the more you put yourself out there doing stuff for people for your own enjoyment, then the more you will get out of life.

I also feel strongly that the "more" to life that people are looking for isn't about the circumstances we're in - yes, it would be nice to have a private jet and be successful and adored and perpetually healthy, but all that is really out there on the rim of the wheel of fate/life, as Joseph Campbell put it so well. As fate inevitably turns, your life is always going to be swinging up and down, up and down. If you're dangling out there on the rim letting your circumstances govern how you feel, you're going to start feeling like "Fortune's fool". The trick is to be as near the center of the wheel as possible, letting circumstances change around you as they will while you inhabit the center. Kind of like Frieda's "dancing in the rain."

How we each inhabit the center and what we personally find as an effective touchstone to get us there in the first place is a whole other conversation.
One that I am no longer willing to enter into very deeply here.

Frieda

that's not at all what i mean by dancing in the rain

Brynn
07-10-2008, 08:33 PM
That's why I said "kind of.":)

Let me get this straight. So by "dancing in the rain", you don't mean that instead of waiting for the storms of life to pass (undesirable circumstances), you should get out into the middle of the storm and dance (delight) in it instead, making the most of the situation, using the storm to your advantage? That's what I thought you meant. To me, that's what it is to be at the center of fortune's wheel instead of being slung around on the rim. What do you mean?

There is a story about the great master Yaoshan just sitting. His teacher, Shitou, practicing together with him, asked, "What are you doing?" Yaoshan replied, "I'm not doing anything at all." Shitou said, "Then you are just idly sitting." Yaoshan replied, "If I were idly sitting, I would be doing something." Finally Shitou said, "You say that you are not doing anything at all. What is it that you are not doing?"

Yaoshan said, "Even the ten thousand sages don't know."

oh then we do mean the same, i guess i was blinded by my disbelief in fortune. see, i don't believe in fortune. i believe that even though it rains sometimes, we also make our own storms. if you fart today, there's a storm in asia. or something.

A boyfriend from a long time ago used to like to brush my hair for me, and when he did it, yes, it was an art.

He started by stroking his fingers gently through the big tangles. Then, starting at the ends, very slowly and patiently he would work up and through it in sections as though it were spun out of something precious. When he was finally done, he would make a precise part, and arrange it around my shoulders the way he wanted it.

don't have a single person who's the be-all role model, but I see aspects of my friends I want to emulate:

I wish I were as gentle as Trent is
I want Jared's leadership skills and his whimsical outlook on life
some of Amie's unsinkable sense of fun, please
I'd like to have Jeremy's relaxation skills
I'd love to be as solid as Doug
I wish I had Heather's groundedness and her sense of caring duty.

there are far too many to list here - but I love and respect my friends very much.

the question isn't really to do with deducing what colours the two white squares might be or what might be in them

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3183/2670083906_d7490542da_o.png

no, it's about how come those two white squares can exist in the first place - given that the pieces and the overall size of each rectangle is the same,

from where do the two "extra" pieces come?

there is an answer. i'll post it later

YsaPur EsChomuw

First picture: 6 green columns, 5 blue ones
Second picture, green and blue swapped places, but yellow/red didn't follow green, so naturally, to preserve the original size, there must be extra squares, to fill up six columns.

The white squares are made of the same stuff that takes up space in your suitcase, so that you can always fit everything in at the start of your holidays but there's not enough room in the suitcase when you pack to come home again.

Of course, shopping may have something to do with that as well.

ok just for mr zero's sanity.

The blue and green shapes are not the same in the two diagrams. In the left picture the green has a left edge of 7 and a right edge of 9 and a bit, while in the right picture it has a left edge of 7 minus a bit and a right of 9, so it's area has decreased. And similarly for the blue. That's where the extra area comes from.

love the life you live

&

live the life you love

both are intimately intertwined - you can't have one without the other

to live the life you love you need to make things happen and not just sit there waiting for them to happen
to love the life you live you need to be relaxed, not worry too much about whether or not your efforts are going to pay off

On Sunday i heard someone say that yoga is 50% willpower and 50% acceptance. Maybe that is why it's such a popular "sport" nowadays.

Frieda
07-22-2008, 04:59 AM
ohh its all so complicated these questions of life

i say love comes first, too. just because it makes everything look better. without love, you can't see the options you have.

i haven't always loved my life-- in fact i've hated it for 25 years. and now that i'm starting all over again, i'm kind of lost, i'm wondering about what the life i'd really REALLY love would actually be--

not this, because it don't really like my job and it leaves me unsatisfied. but i don't know what it would be!

i told you it was complicated.

Hyakujo's Fox
07-22-2008, 05:15 AM
living is the thing, and hopefully, loving it is the reaction to that living. so frame your objectives in terms of living, being honest to your self, and hopefully you'll do well enough in living to get the loving it reaction.

but to make loving-it your objective, puts you into a place where your emotions can feed on themselves. eg. from failure arises sadness, but feeling sadness is another failure in itself because your goal is to love it, so you get another unhappy, which is another failure, so you get another unhappy, which is another failure, etc.

anyhow, that's my view of it this week. :)

I used to dream of the life I would live and love someday but I've come to realise that this is an ideal I shouldn't spend all my energy on trying to get to, because if I did I probably wouldn't love it as much as I thought I would - grass is always greener and such. I'm learning to love the life I live, and work on changing some of the bad parts and doing more of what makes it good, rather than trying to attain an ideal life as a whole. I don't think anyone is ever going to have a life that they love because of an absence of bad things in it or the fulfillment of all of their desires - that shouldn't be what makes you happy, I think.
