Halloween ??? 10.31.08 What or who is your scariest memory?

YsaPur EsChomuw
10-31-2008, 02:46 AM
It happened the year when I learned to read. To my horror I discovered that one of the graves we cleaned and put flowers on every year had my name written on it. First name and surname. Somehow I thought they were preparing it for me. That year wading in fallen golden leaves and collecting melted candlewax and ejoying the beauty of thousands of lit candles flickering in the cemetery at dusk wasn't much fun.

I laugh every time I see that. Inexplicable. I can't help it. It's one of my favorite things.

Oh - I always grit my teeth when I hear kew-pons instead of coo-pons when someone's pronouncing "coupons." I don't understand where
kew-pons comes from.

brightpearl

^OMG I THOUGHT YOU SAID YOU WERE FROM TEXAS??!
:D

My best explanation I have is that the "kew" comes from learning to talk from my grandmother.

I hate it when people say syrup as "see-rup" instead of "sir-up".
However I recognize it is an acceptable pronounciation. For Yankees.

Brynn
11-08-2008, 11:53 PM
yes, you're right, it's sirrup. and ketchup, not catsup. and "ant" not "ahhnt" and vase not vahhhhz. But my Texas mom always says kewpon and I just don't get it! Must have been that part of my childhood up there with all the French Canadians in Maine. Coupon as in coupe' and "coup de foudre," durn it.

I meant to post this last week. What luck that its become topical again.
David Sedaris, about undecided voters:

I look at these people and can’t quite believe that they exist. Are they professional actors? I wonder. Or are they simply laymen who want a lot of attention?

To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”

To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.

The only thing that works with my kids is this: I hold up a dollar and say "If you can hiccup for me exactly when I tell you to, you can have this five dollar bill." Then we concentrate on the task for a little while - "Hiccup right....NOW! Nope, you missed it. Try again...."
They are so distracted that they forget to hiccup. They rarely get the money unless it is absolutely perfect, and it never is - which is the secret of its power.
They are so relieved to have stopped hiccuping that they don't care.
So Frieda, if you will hiccup for me the exact second that you read "now" then I will give you a five dollar bill.
Okay....

frieda to get rid of the hiccups and finally get seeping what you must do is stick yours index fingers firmly in yours ears and at the same time an assistant or bystander must hold a big glass of cold water to yours mouth for you to drink it all up nonstop. altrenatively the assiatant or bystander could stick their fingers in yours ears and enabling you hold the big glass of water. it doesnie matter! good luck and i hope you get some seep now.

frieda's correct, or at least corrrect according to this article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7739493.stm) where the idea for this ¿uestion of the da? came from

"
consider a photo of someone you think is you eight years ago. what makes that person you? you might say he she was composed of the same cells as you now. but most of your cells are replaced every seven years. you might instead say you're an organism, a particular human being, and that organisms can survive cell replacement - this oak being the same tree as the sapling i planted last year.

but are you really an entire human being? if surgeons swapped george bush's brain for yours, surely the bush look-alike, recovering from the operation in the white house, would be you. hence it is tempting to say that you are a human brain, not a human being.

but why the brain and not the spleen? presumably because the brain supports your mental states, eg your hopes, fears, beliefs, values, and memories. but then it looks like it's actually those mental states that count, not the brain supporting them. so the view is that even if the surgeons didn't implant your brain in bush's skull, but merely scanned it, wiped it, and then imprinted its states on to bush's pre-wiped brain, the bush look-alike recovering in the white house would again be you.

but the view faces a problem: what if surgeons imprinted your mental states on two pre-wiped brains: george bush's and gordon brown's? would you be in the white house or in downing street? there's nothing on which to base a sensible choice. yet one person cannot be in two places at once.

in the end, then, no attempt to make sense of your continued existence over time works. you are not the person who started reading this article.

What's your ancestry?

I'm told I'm mostly Irish and look it, with a bit of English and German judging from the surnames, and my great grandmother on my mother's side was Blackfoot. The one photo I've seen of her was labeled "Mary" and I figure that can't be at all right. She didn't look very happy.

My mother got the straight black hair, beautiful.

Also I've heard I'm 1/32 Balrog on my paternal grandfather's side, but I'm not sure that's true.

my mother always said she didn't know except Swedish
(her maiden name was Witt which means fair skin or white hair)
her maternal grandmother was one half Cherokee
before that Bohemian
(maternal grannies mother's maiden name was Salyer she hailed from Salyersville Kentucky)
as as far as I can reckon that is an English name.
my maternal grannies actual last name was Minnix.

and however, I have always hoped that the hillbilly ancestors
started as gypsies and I am therefore the one person alive who has a
little of every race.

"

and the work is: only collect; that is to say, collect everything, indiscriminately. you’re five years old. don’t presume too much to know what’s important and what isn’t. photocopy journal articles, photograph archives; create bibliographies, buy books; make notes on every article or book you read, even if it’s just one line saying “never read this again”; collect newspaper clippings and email them to yourself; collect quotes; save your ideas for future papers, future projects, future conferences, even if they seem wildly implausible now. hoarding must become instinctual, it must be an uncontrollable, primal urge. and the higher, civilizing impulse that kicks in after the fact is organization, or librarianship. you must keep tabs on everything you collect, somehow; a system must be had, and the system must be idiot-proof. that is to say, you should be able to look back on it six months for now and not be completely stymied as to why you’ve organized things that way. (the present versions of ourselves are invariably the biggest idiots, and six months will make that clear).

My previous habit has been to dig a hole.

However, my current goal is to see whether I can enjoy being in the maze.

MAZES ARE SO RUBBISH - i'm not going in it. if people are daft enough to go in them in the first place then it serves them right if they get stuck

& anyway that one in the ^picture's someone's 2ftx2ft homemade one amongst a weedpatch and that's their pet guinea pig in the middle of it

"Amaze is a maze is amaze or is a maze a maze not amaze? ...."
I will repeat that so long until the maze is confused and/or pissed off enough and simply walks away!

re: yesterday's question
The who can reach the rather high keyhole just walk though the two doors located about 1/3 of the way up the photo on the left, making sure no children are watching
the children cut through the bushes sometimes but once you are cought by the gardener you are doomed to take over his mowing routine until the job is
COMPLETELY FINISHED!
