falling asleep depends on why i'm sleeping. if i'm going to sleep for a full night's slumber i do so on my right. if i'm napping, i do so on my back.

if i'm napping i wake up on my back. i don't roll over when napping. if i'm doing a full night i wake up on my back or right side. i may then make a conscious decision to roll to the left and get 30 minutes more. but i can't do any kind of deep meaningful sleep on my left.

How do you take your coffee (or tea)? Then make some sort of amusing-if-questionable correlation between that and some other aspect of your life.

Stephi_B
10-28-2007, 09:57 AM
"amusing-if-questionable correlation", oi that's hard intellectual work for a Sunday, but okey-dokey let's try it... ;)

Drink coffee either with milk (if normal milk is available, concentrated milk is bäh!) or with sugar (2 pieces/teaspoons usually, but 3 if Vanya or another "coffee is only good when a spoon can stand in it" person has made the coffee) depending on mood and/or availability of needed substances - anything else (both milk and sugar) I consider extremely decadent and do so only after sex (of course normal milk and sugar have to be available somehow and I need not have additionally an acute hangover, see below) or in a nobel cafe (where waiters wear bow ties or such), in latter case I even like to be very, very decadent and take the brown sugar. In extreme cases (acute hangover, acute migraine, out in the wilderness, chaotic situations like in the middle of moving from A to B) I drink coffee black, preferably thick so a spoon can stand in it.

Correlates to my life in general being some sort of nested code (could be written by a Japanese theoretically physicist, most probably in unintelligable FORTRAN 66, after he attended a karaoke party involving too much sake - no I don't think about anyone in particular :D) with lots of IF X THEN conditions and randomly thus unpredictable scattered, coding-technically very sleazy GO TO Y clauses, but me nevertheless yearning for simple either / or's, either milk or sugar so to say.

I was denied all but a sip a day of coffee when I was a child.
This sip teased and titillated me.
I craved my brown sweet love so much that I eventually took to shoplifting small bottles of instant coffee crystals from Safeway and would satiate my needs in the cool solace of my willow tree fort.
Mixing the instant joy with warm hose water & Nestlé’s Quick.
Years later a therapist took all the romantic recollection from my memories by explaining my behaviors as self medication by a depressed youth suffering from severe ADHD.

As a completely 100% {no, seriously} healthy adult , I drink my coffee as strong and thick as I can get it. I avoid dark roasted brews, however.

I love strength but abhor bravado.

Coffee with cream with the highest fat content available, certainly not chemical cow or as low as 2%, whipping cream or in a pinch sweetened condensed milk will do though I don't like sweet coffee much.

Correlation: always eat full fat foods and eschew "lite," really there's nothing more to it. Fat gives satiety and tastes like the actual food.

brightpearl

[SIZE="1"]preferably thick so a spoon can stand in it.

Ah yes. Cafe Valdez (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exxon_Valdez).
I enjoyed your correlation, btw. :)

I usually drink mine half Cafe Valdez from a French press, half hot skim milk, no sugar. If I don't add milk, I do add sugar, but not very much. And then every once in a while, I have a double latte with whole milk and a lot of flavored syrup, and chocolate powder on top. And whipped cream.

Lots of other parts of my life are like that...Moderation nearly all the time, and I'm really happy with that nearly all the time. I'm reluctant to splurge, but when I finally do, I don't feel guilty about it.

i used to drink tea before i decided to eliminate hot caffeinated beverages from my life. no sugar, no milk. unsweetened all the way. i also drink iced tea completely unadulterated and unsweetened, when i drink iced tea.

there's a perfect correlation between this and the way i regard food, as well. i never add seasoning to food once it's prepared. i never touch the salt and pepper shakers at restaurants. i don't add soy sauce to chinese food. i don't add ketchup to fries. the only adornment i'll add is a little extra parmesan to italian food and extra tzatziki to greek food (when applicable).

the way i see it, things taste the way they're supposed to taste once they hit the table. after that you've got to stop fiddling with it. once tea is brewed it's either good tea or just don't drink it. don't go fiddling with it and adding stuff to perk up the flavor. and like life, you should take things at face value without trying to muddle around too much to fix it to your liking.

there's no good logic to it, it's just how i do things.

Coffee
10-28-2007, 05:05 PM
Coffee: 30% overdosed french press, once tall cup in the morning with from 1-1 1/2 tsp of sugar. Roast varies, as does varietal. I roast my own beans so mix it up frequently but tend towards medium to medium dark roasts on average, with occasional light and dark roasts for variety.

Tea: Only used in emergencies (when I forgot to roast coffee and run out of the fixing for a 'real' morning beverage), preferably black tea with a tsp of sugar or honey.

Correlates to my DIY nature...not so amusing i guess, but fark it.

T.I.P.
10-28-2007, 05:10 PM
^^ (auntie) you're the polar opposite of my dad in that aspect. He's usually looking for the salt shaker before we've even entered the restaurant.

I also try to resist the urge of adding salt, and I find that eating is a more interesting experience that way. Don't give me fries without ketchup though !

brightpearl
10-28-2007, 05:12 PM

Strong black irish tea. I take the milk, pour it into the milk cap, just enough to fill the centre part which sits inside the milk container neck, then put that amount into my tea.

The hidden meaning is that I'm mentally unstable.

Frieda
10-28-2007, 06:46 PM
i drink my coffee very strong (espresso or ristretto in restaurants) and very sweet with lots of sugar.

stuff gives me a kick-start and keeps me going if necessary. hidden meaning is that i probably don't sleep enough to stay awake without caffeinated substances :D

edited to add: no sugar in the tea, i drink jasmine tea or mint tea.. sometimes camomile. black tea and the green tea weird stuff makes my stomach feel odd.

lukkucairi

I'm a tea-drinker. Tetley's for preference - brewed very strong, with goat milk in it (I'm allergic to cow's milk). Sometimes I take a half teaspoon of sugar, but lately not.
Hidden meaning? I have a hidden traditional streak, but I'm nonetheless unable to conform.

Out of the five tastes, I prefer bitter. I like the bitter taste of tea that's been brewed a little too long. I like bitter because it keeps you on your toes. It's a complex kind of sensation - hard to love, but worth it if you succeed.

...If I might jump-start a question for tomorrow (it's almost tomorrow here - it's tomorrow already on the other side of the Atlantic...!)

What's your preference in the range of the five tastes? And why?

- Salty
- Sweet
- Sour
- Bitter
- Umami*

*Umami being the kind of proteinaceous flavor you realize you're missing after a day of eating nothing but potato chips.

but I find myself tending to buy clothes in a certain hue more than others - I do have a preference, even if it's subtle. I would not be without the other tastes, but I have a special spot in my heart (and on my tongue) for bitter - it often completes a dish that would otherwise be kind of bland and ordinary.

For my closest family & friends and my dearest colleagues

Maybe I'd also cry (though not with close as much intensity as for the above)
for some great person I didn't know personally, but during my life

Can not give you a specific number..hopefully, I am not done meeting people I may care about. If someone enriches your life, brings you love, happiness/joy, then it follows that their loss would bring you tears. Ask for a list of those I would not shed tears for, and a number might be more readily available.

craig johnston
10-30-2007, 02:13 PM
i meant if they died today of course. not people yet unmet.
so the answer is the worlds population minus those you wouldn't

craig johnston
10-30-2007, 06:04 PM
yeah, some people cry easier than others. i mean those
people who's death would cause you such grief that you
would lose control of your emotions, i guess. i was thinking
about the large number of friends i have, and how important
they were to me, and wondering how many people can be
that important. i mean, how much space have we got in our

well, there's myself, of course... but who knows, sometimes you can't cry, at least immediately, sometimes you might cry depending on the way you hear the news, you can cry when a character in a movie dies, or someone's tragic story is told on the television, you might cry for a stranger if they died in front of you.

If you ask how many people there are whose deaths would definitely be something awful and disturbing for me, there are probably a dozen or so people who are like the permanent cast of my life, and maybe half a dozen or more who are playing a major role right now, then it becomes a little cloudy.

Interesting question - As a teenager, I didn't cry immediately when my father died - it took a couple of years. But nowadays I tend to cry for anything and everybody, including - and especially - pets. I'm an indiscriminate crybaby. When I was pregnant it was even worse - I found myself crying while watching Folger's commercials or the National Cheerleading Championships, and I don't even like high school cheerleaders. Something about the fact that this stupid event would probably be the highlight of their young lives, and then unending banality thereafter...

lukkucairi

I'd guess at any given time probably about 150 people, met and unmet. That's the Dunbar number.

Internal psychology also plays a huge role as to whether the death of someone I don't know affects me. I never expected to cry for Ronald Reagan, but I did. I don't even like Reagan!

New ¿question?, for Wed 10/31/07:

OK, maybe not scary as Halloween would require... now unless what you think romantic is rather scary for most other people?

¿What was the most romantic thing a lover/boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/husband ever did for you?

For me that was when my ex played for me on the guitar (which he had brought along all the 800-900km travelling by coach to Berlin extra for that reason) - out on the balcony, some of my neighbours popped their heads out after a while. And he also sang to it - actually quite good! - after some encouragement, some indie thingies, dunno, been too occupied with grinning quite daffy.... :)

Just kidding. :D

I like amber the best, probably,

but also turquoise.

(this green stuff is nice)

And pearls, of course. :)
http://www.ivymoon.com/Jewelry/GreenPearl2.jpg
(umm...apparently green is my favorite color.)

I like to do beadwork, so I love the unusual colors of the usual stones, even though those are often considered less valuable. From buying beads, I've learned that you have to be careful about where the materials come from (some of it is mined by children and such  ) and also what it really is...so much is dyed, or it's stabilized chalk, etc. It can get really frustrating.

I recently bought a teeny drill so I can make beads out of whatever I want...
bottle cap bracelet? coffee bean earrings? bowling ball choker?

new question for sunday the fourth

have you ever plotted your revenge and acted it out as planned?

auntie aubrey
11-03-2007, 08:40 PM
yes, although "plotted" gives me more credit than i'm due.

i got a boss fired out of revenge for how she was treating her employees and employees' direct reports. she was ruining the quality of life for my department. she turned over 9 people in an 11 person department in under 6 months. she used to come tell me the delightful ways in which she planned to make people miserable enough to quit so she wouldn't have to go to the trouble of proving they deserved to be fired. members of the department, my direct reports for whom i felt responsible, were physically ill, taking anti-depressants, and showing signs of pretty intense stress. i felt the stress myself.

so i planned it out and logged occurrences of questionable behavior over a period of 2 months. i pulled together a pretty solid argument and then waited until she finally did something that violated serious company policy. then i started the proceedings. the company invited her to voluntarily quit and she did so.

i don't regret it. she deserved it. she affected people's health, including my own. in fact by the time she quit i had had several serious health complications directly resulting from stress and i only stayed with the company 3 weeks beyond her resignation.

so yes, and i suffer no moral qualms about it.

trisherina
11-03-2007, 10:19 PM
Yes. Not infrequently. Most I can't discuss publicly, but the one I always enjoy recounting appears elsewhere on the board, where I stuck an ex with a gigantic phone bill (he'd had the phone in his name) when he refused to pay me back some cash I'd loaned him. After spending hours a day on dialup long distance, I moved out of the place we'd shared together, got a phone in my own name, and advised the phone company where they could find him to deal with all those dreadful unpaid bills.

have you ever plotted your revenge and acted it out as planned?

i've thought really hard about this question for the past hour. no, i can't recall ever having plotted revenge and then acted it out. of course like everyone, i've impulsively retaliated in both major and minor situations where i've felt wronged. personally, i'm against revenge, and tend to lump it in beside spite and HAT.

in trying to get myself some context for the question via the googles, this piece struck a chord, with me it did anyway:

Psychologists believe revenge is essentially borne of unsatisfied anger. "It is a very aggressive act," says Brian Thomas-Peter, director of psychological services at the Reaside clinic for mentally disturbed offenders in Birmingham. "But it usually happens in a furtive way, so that the avenger doesn't have to deal with confrontation. Excessive revenge reveals a person's limited resources." The inference is that the humiliated but sophisticated can recoup their loss of self-esteem without stooping to venomous subterfuge.

The trouble is that on occasion, acts of violence just feel good. Avengers say that the instant of savagery provides a cathartic release of tension. Guilt and remorse may set in later, but the moment of revenge is sweet. "At the time I felt absolutely marvellous, totally and utterly justified and vindicated," Kathryn recalls. Joan Francis, 36, who was a battered wife for 10 years, derived exquisite pleasure from sneakily causing her (now divorced) husband misery. Depending upon his crime, she would smash his car windscreen or lace his boxer shorts with itching-powder. "My revenge kept me sane.," she says defiantly. "I found it spiritually uplifting."

T.I.P.
11-04-2007, 06:35 AM
i do not indulge in revenge because i know it will eventually come back and bite me in the ass (and by "it", i mean "me").

'Course, sometimes i can't resist an impulse to snap back, on the moment, at someone who has wronged me. But that hardly qualifies as "plotted" or "premeditated" revenge.

brightpearl
11-04-2007, 07:08 AM
I thought hard about this, too. I keep thinking that I must have, at some point, but I can't come up with an example. I did do something similar to what Auntie did, to a boss who was deleting some hours that coworker's had put in so her numbers looked better, but it wasn't out of revenge...My friends needed to be paid for their hours, and I was in a position to print out the documentation that would get them back, and I knew she would fire me if I went to her directly as she'd done it to someone else. The whole thing was sad...

So I don't know if what Auntie described is really revenge, either. I guess it depends more on the intent than the action. Even the abused woman above...I wonder if she needed to do those things to survive?

This goes along with my (very tentative) theory that there's no such thing as an asshole...there are just people who are in so much pain that they do assholeish things.

hmm.

yeah i'm waffling. after reading what mr z posted about revenge i'm now reconsidering my definition. i'm thinking now, in hindsight, that that situation doesn't qualify for "plotting revenge."

in which case i'm not sure i can think of a yes. i'm sure there's something. i have the capacity for being a very shitty human being. surely there's something. but i can't think of anything.

living well is the best revenge

most people who make me angry aren't evil - they're just being jackasses - if I have the opportunity to remove myself from their influence and let them continue self-sabotaging, that's usually what I do.

if I don't have that option or they're targeting others, I will do what I can to shut them down - but the solution seldom involves meeting force with force.

^^ definitely stand by the post. as i said, i have the capacity for shittiness that i know surely encompasses revenge. it doesn't absolve me of that shittiness just because i can't call anything to mind at the moment.

onto the question of today:

When you need to relax, what do you typically do?

hot baths with various and sundry ballistics, bubbles, salts and oils. usually by candlelight. and i made an investment in stress reduction by placing an ipod speaker dock (with water-tight remote, of course) in the master bathroom so i'd always have the opportunity for tunes in the tub. with an ambient playlist prepped, ordered, and ready to go.

when that fails i try belly breathing. my favorite belly breathing mantra is "sanu mi olodumare." which, as i understand it, is a prayer for protection from olodumare (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olodumare), the creator of the earth and all life on it in yoruban folklore. i find both the prayer and the folklore comforting.

Frieda
11-05-2007, 04:39 AM
when i need to relax, i listen to some music and sing along. sometimes something that calms me down, and sometimes something to lift me up. or if the weather is nice i get into my car and drive along the river and enjoy the scenery.

or i just relax on my bed or the sofa and meditate a bit :)

but reading auntie's story, i think i really need a bathtub :D

Stephi_B
11-05-2007, 07:44 AM
When it's warm, I sit out on the balcony, depending on time of the day with coffee/tea or beer/ice-tea and watch 'my' crossroads.http://img363.imageshack.us/img363/6827/balconyla3.th.jpg (http://img363.imageshack.us/my.php?image=balconyla3.jpg) Can spend hours doing that - relaxes me a lot. :)

When it's cold or wet outside I cuddle myself up in my green armchair (yes, the same I need for my morning ritual) or sprawl out on the big mattress with something warm to drink, a blanket, a book.

Listening to music is usually involved, hopping around with it when I need to get rid of stress.

On Sunday afternoons - to get a good relaxation dose before the week starts again - I like to go for an extended walk round in my neighbourhood, watching people, looking what's new or what I haven't noticed before, buying a newspaper etc. and then going in some (internet)cafe.

Reading about Auntie's fine relaxation habits: :)
Taking an extensive shower is something nice too - I miss the bathtub I had in my old flat in Regensburg a bit though... oh, but I had no balcony there, and a balcony is definitely more important!

i'm probably a 7. and i definitely favor my left side (left handed, left chewer, left eyed, left faced). my eyebrow on the left side has a better arch than the one on the right. and there's a very slight difference in the line of the fold of my eyelids (although the spouse says i'm crazy for noticing) and i prefer the left. also the tip of my nose points just left of center. that drives me nuts, knowing my nose isn't dead-on.

I have no idea how symmetrical my face is. Um, I have a little <s>mole</s> beauty mark on the right, but both my eyes are the same color and I have 2 eyebrows, so I guess a 7 or something. I dunno if I have a good side...

Despite a certain amount of awareness of how focused humans are on symmetry in appearance, I have never once considered the various weightings to my facial features, let alone assigned a numeric value! Nonetheless I prefer one side because I imagine it looks better in photos -- a notion difficult to quantify because it's so daft and twee.

To The Immortal Memory of the Halibut, On Which I Dined This Day, Monday, April 26, 1784

Where hast thou floated, in what seas pursu'd
Thy pastime? When wast thou an egg new spawn'd,
Lost in the immensity of ocean's waste?
Roar as they might, the overbearing winds
That rock'd the deep, thy cradle, thou wast safe--
And in thy minikin and embryo state,
Attach'd to the firm leaf of some salt weed,
Didst outlive tempests, such as wrung and rack'd
The joints of many a stout and gallant bark,
And whelm'd them in the unexplor'd abyss.
Indebted to no magnet and no chart,
Nor under guidance of the polar fire,
Thou wast a voyager on many coasts,
Grazing at large in meadows submarine,
Where flat Batavia just emerging peeps
Above the brine,--where Caledonia's rocks
Beat back the surge,--and where Hibernia shoots
Her wondrous causeway far into the main.
--Wherever thou hast fed, thou little thought'st,
And I not more, that I should feed on thee.
Peace, therefore, and good health, and much good fish,
To him who sent thee! and success, as oft
As it descends into the billowy gulf,
To the same drag that caught thee!--Fare thee well!
Thy lot thy brethern of the slimy fin
Would envy, could they know that thou wast doom'd
To feed a bard, and to be prais'd in verse.

The silicon chip inside her head.
Gets switched to overload,
And nobody's gonna go to school today,
She's going to make them stay at home,
And daddy doesn't understand it,
He always said she was as good as gold,
And he can see no reason.
Cos there are no reasons.
What reason do you need to be shown.

Tell me why.
I Dont't like Mondays.
I want to shoot.
The whole day down.

The Telex machine is kept so clean.
As it types to a waiting world,
And Mother feels so shocked,
Father's world is rocked,
And their thoughts turn to.
Their own little girl.
Sweet 16 ain't that peachy keen,
No, it ain't so neat to admit defeat,
They can see no reasons.
Cos there are no reasons.
What reason do you need to be shown,Br.

Tell me why.
I Dont't like Mondays.
I want to shoot.
The whole day down.

All the playing's stopped in the playground now
She wants to play with her toys a while
And school's out early and soon we'll be learning
And the lesson today is how to die,
And then the bullhorn crackles,
And the captain crackles,
With the problems and the how's and why's
And he can see no reasons
Cos there are no reasons
What reason do you need to die

The silicon chip ...

Tell me why...

borosililcate glasswork. i already do soft glass but you can only really create small things with soft glass. boro would allow me to work bigger with better colors. but in order to work boro you have to invest in a fairly hefty torch and a kiln to anneal the final product. that's a few grand right there. and then you have to burn an oxygen/propane mix, which means committing to buying oxygen in those large industrial sized tanks, which means you have to find a company that can supply the tanks and get on a delivery schedule, and which means you have to be able to build out the space to accommodate said tanks as well as proper ventilation to deal with the fumes given off by the oxy/propane and melted boro.

soft glass is so much cheaper. a couple of clamps, a hothead torch and a small cannister of map gas.

but oh, to work boro. my goal is to be able to make marbles and drawer pulls. i'm done with silly soft glass beads and ornaments.

Question for Saturday the 10th:

I heard something like this on the radio the other day...
What one thing in your home tells a story about you/your life? Don't feel obliged to tell the story, but at least identify the object.

I'll be out all day, so I'll go ahead and answer...I have a brick from Janis Joplin's childhood house on my front porch. Telling the story would reveal more than I want to say publicly, but there is one.

Oysters and snails are pretty much undifferentiated slime. For my money, oysters tend to go better with other sadistic foods I am fond of.

Oyster-wasabi shots with aquavit
Serves 6
Warning: Not for the faint-of-heart!

3 ounces aquavit
6 small fresh oysters such as Olympias, freshly shucked (or use pre-shucked Chesapeake or Pacific oysters)
3/4 teaspoon prepared wasabi paste, or to taste
1 1/2 teaspoons domestic or imported black caviar, or salmon roe caviar
3/4 teaspoon minced fresh cilantro
1 teaspoon orange zest

Place the aquavit in the freezer at least 2 hours before you plan to serve. Chill 6 shot glasses, preferably the straight-sided variety.
If using the very large, shucked Pacific oysters, cut them into halves or quarters. Working quickly, place 1 tablespoon of aquavit into each of the chilled glasses and top with 1/8 teaspoon of wasabi paste, or to taste. Top with an oyster, and top each oyster with 1/4 teaspoon caviar, and a tiny pinch of cilantro and orange zest. Serve immediately.
If it is possible to do so elegantly, drink the whole thing in one gulp.
