Bollywood 'Oscars' Honor Baywatch Star Hasselhoff
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (Reuters) - India's movie industry handed out its version of the Oscars on Saturday at the Bollywood Movie Awards, which saw a veteran director take top honors and a U.S. actor best known for "Baywatch" named international star of the year.
Dancers in shimmering costumes, Indian beauties in saris and sultry heartthrobs sporting long black coats crowded the Taj Mahal for the occasion.
The Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, that is. The event was held in the U.S. East Coast gambling resort as part of Bollywood's bid to be a global force in cinema.
It was a fitting backdrop for a show that mixed the glitz of a major movie industry with the retro feel of variety-show dance numbers, the likes of which were long ago excised from the Oscars.
An audience composed largely of Americans of Indian origin cheered as veteran Yash Chopra was named best director for his film "Veer-Zaara," which also picked up the award for best film and best actor for its star Shahrukh Khan.
Rani Mukherjee, one of the few major divas to take the stage, won the best actress award for her role in "Hum Tum."
"The winner is the "Spielberg" of India ... Yash Chopra," said former Baywatch star David Hasselhoff as he presented the award for best film, referring to star U.S. director Steven Spielberg.
Bollywood has a reputation for colorful kitsch -- melodramatic plots, young lovers battling cruel fate, wicked villains and sentimental, but chaste, song-and-dance routines.
"Whether it's comedy or romance or action, films should touch your heart," Chopra said, explaining the appeal of his films and the genre, which despite efforts to expand its audience has so far made few inroads into the U.S. market.
BIG CHEERS FOR BAYWATCH STAR
Though an array of stars including former Miss India Lara Dutta entertained the crowd, Hasselhoff provoked some of the night's biggest cheers when he picked up his statuette.
The Bollywood awards -- which resemble a slim-line Oscar holding what could be a torch or a bunch of flowers -- are chosen according to a popular vote by fans.
"Baywatch" and "Knight Rider," in which Hasselhoff co-starred with a car named Kit, may raise sniggers from highbrow critics at home but they are still going strong in India, and the actor said he had much in common with the escapism of Bollywood.
"I'm proud of shows like Baywatch and Knight Rider because it's about saving lives, not taking lives," he told Reuters.
"It's entertainment, it's tongue in cheek, it brings the world together," he said, adding that the entertainment industry was a powerful force for good in the world.
"I think it's responsible for a lot of world peace," Hasselhoff said, adding that he was hoping to work in India soon on a project based on a series of romantic novels.
"I never knew exactly how to get there. Now I've got this (award) it's like my key to India," he said.
Bollywood churns out around 1,000 movies a year. But despite a fan base that extends to the Middle East and Europe, few films make money.
But Shammi Kapoor, who was given a lifetime achievement award, said better technology and funding were leading to more and more better films. "They're getting to be more topical," he added. "They aren't the happy happy movies of yesteryear.
Bollywood still has comic heroes and dastardly villains, however, and the awards paid tribute to both. Aftab Shivdasani turned up to claim his prize for best comedian, but the villain of the year, Abhishek Bachchan, was nowhere to be seen.

A US manufacturer of hot sauces has made what he claims is the fieriest chilli powder it is possible to make.
The powder is so hot that Blair Lazar's customers have to sign a legal waiver before tasting it.
When Mr Lazar himself tried his "16 Million Reserve" he says his tongue swelled up and hurt for several days.
The pure capsaicin, 30 times hotter than the hottest pepper and 8,000 times hotter than Tabasco sauce, is distilled from several tons of fresh peppers.
Mr Lazar describes the powder, produced in a laboratory by workers wearing sealed suits and masks to avoid inhaling the dust, as "pure heat".
The final product is a white, crystalline powder.
Capsaicin does not actually burn, instead it stimulates nerve endings in your mouth, giving the sensation of burning.
Over the past decade or so, manufacturers have taken the humble chilli pepper and distilled it into ever more fiery sauces.
The names of the concoctions - After Death Sauce and Insanity Sauce are just two - give some idea of the pain that is involved during and after consuming them.
The spiciness of the sauces is measured in what are known as Scoville Units.
The higher the number of units, the bigger the burn, although some manufacturers say that beyond about 350,000 units, the measurement becomes meaningless.

Ballade (des dames de temps jadis)
François Villon c.1461
Dictes moy ou, n'en quel pays,
Est Flora la belle Rommaine,
Archipiades ne Thaïs,
Qui fut sa cousine germaine,
Echo parlant quant bruyt on maine
Dessus riviere ou sus estan,
Qui beaulté ot trop plus q'humaine.
Mais ou sont les neiges d'antan?
Ou est la tres sage Helloïs,
Pour qui chastré fut et puis moyne

Pour son amour ot ceste essoyne.
Semblablement, ou est la royne
Qui commanda que Buridan
Fust geté en ung sac en Saine?
Mais ou sont les neiges d'antan?
La royne Blanche comme lis
Qui chantoit a voix de seraine,
Berte au grand pié, Beatris, Alis,
Haremburgis qui tint le Maine,
Et Jehanne la bonne Lorraine
Qu'Englois brulerent a Rouan;
Ou sont ilz, ou, Vierge souvraine?

You have the cart before the horse here. Love bugs CAUSE paint failure. Just wait til the summer, when they get so thick that you hit em and they cover your car. You can't find just one, you always have 2 stuck together, kind of like a Jesus Titties video. and multiply that by 10,000. Maybe all that love bug spoo will glue the paint back on your bumper.

Right on Surbhi! Congrats!!!
Doesn't it suck that you can never get back to a 4.0?
I actually had a 4.0 for about 2 years in college (amazing since I was a solid 2.0- student in High school)...till I took a Western Civilization course from a really cool African gentleman, who had a very very deep accent (it took 2 weeks to figure out his speach patterns enough to be able to take good notes), who only gave essay exams, and who's course was mostly based on studying Greek tragedies, and who did not give A's EVER...I got a B from him.
Then I went to Actual art school and grades became meaningless. :)

Just got a call from my hiking buddy Dana and will call her back later. We usually find a hike that looks easy on paper and ends up to be a killer. At least it'll work off all the calories I'm stocking up by eating out every night!

Just did a hike a few weeks ago on Smith Rock, OR. The sign said one way was 5.0 miles to Monkey Face, and the other said 1.5 miles. So we take the shorter route, not quite comprehending that it was 1.5 vertical miles! Oy. Factor into that an eight-year-old who's complaining after 30 minutes, and you've got the makings of a Death March! It was beautiful it though. And the 8-year-old learned a valuable lesson: whining for three hours doesn't make anything easier, and it doesn't make it all go away. Later, I heard him bragging about it to a friend.

Fortunately, neither of us whined yesterday. Unfortunately, it was a bitch of a hike! Dana and I both agreed that like our hike up Mt. Cammerer last year now that we've been there we don't have to go back.
2.5 miles on Mt. Sterling Trail in Great Smoky Mtns. NP. Very few switchbacks and no level areas the whole way. However, the wildflowers were in such abundance we ended up stopping about every 30 feet to admire them. That made the hike much easier and worthwhile.
A partial list of what we saw:
Three kinds of wild orchid (I gotta put that first, don't I?)
Three kinds of wild lilies
Four kinds of trillium
Two kinds of wild violets
Two kinds of bluets
Flame Azalea
Mountain Laurel
Wood Sorrel
Foamflower
Mousewort
Lungwort
Jack-in-the-pulpit
Many huge, old growth trees, the most impressive being a tulip poplar that was at least 13 feet in diameter.
We didn't get any pictures as it was pretty windy which threw the flowers around a bit. We did get pictures from the firetower on top of Mt. Sterling.
The hike back down, on Baxter Creek Trail (6.5 miles), was equally tough, made easier by the presence of the old growth forest mentioned earlier. Apparently, when this part of North Carolina was logged it was decided that the terrain on Mt. Sterling was too steep and rocky to make it worthwhile putting in railroad lines and roads to get to the trees. Thus it was spared the loggers axe and saw.
When we got back down to Big Creek, we spent a while getting photos of the creek and blackmail pictures of each other. Then we took my car back up the road to the Mt. Sterling Trailhead and got Dana's jeep.
I'm still sore so will spend today at the Museum of the Cherokee Indian in, of all places, Cherokee. I'll also visit Qualla Craft Co-op and see what they have new in the way of pottery and wood sculptures. Lunch at somewhere non-touristy...Taco Bell?

My youngest brother is staying with us for a while, there's so much life in the house these days. My son and brother are jumping on the trampoline outside, I feel nostalgic and I'm remembering the free spirit of youth.

Got a referral card from my doctor the other day and have an appointment to see an Orthopedic Surgeon about my shoulder. Seems I have a torn rotator cuff.
The guy I'll see is the orthropod for the Jacksonville Jaguars and did a consult with me a long while ago when I had partial ruptures of my Achilles tendons so I know I'm in good hands.
Funny thing:
His name is Tandron and when I emailed Momrbee and Vickie about the appt. Outlook came back with "tendon" as an alternate spelling of "Tandron"! :D
