well it hasn't completely broken down.. but i have to get through the annual checkup thing..

have to get 2 new tires, new brake things, get my headlight replaced because it's still broken (i got through the checkup last year with a broken headlight) and maybe a new exhaust pipe thing so that plus the costs for the checkup itself will be about 300 euros i guess..

and since i went on a severe shopping spree in paris last month i don't really have the money. so the hookers will have to wait :(

A journey to Leh should always be seen as a journey of discovery that will reveal not one, but many mysteries.

In the month of May, I visited the land with trekking and sight-seeing on the agenda. The flight to Ladakh’s capital took one's breath away. The half-empty aircraft flew over a desert-like inhabitable plain. The formations on the hills and mountains reminded one of an age when lava flowed freely on this earth.

Then, just as one was starting to get used to scenery, the Himalayas came alive. The sun rays glinting off the ice, created a prism of sorts, making it all the more surreal. It didn't need a genius to understand why the ancients regarded the Himalayas as the abode of gods. That was perhaps the best part of journey, flying over the Himalayas, the youngest of the world's great mountain ranges. In a nutshell, I felt tiny; I felt touched; I felt awed by the natural splendour of the range.

Trekking in Leh is an altogether different experience from anywhere close to home. The air is thinner, the weather is cooler and it snows too. For someone not used to that weather, it can be tough. But perhaps one of the main reasons that I wanted to go to Leh was to actually go off into the wild with no particular place in mind. That didn't exactly happen but maybe it will... soon.

Amongst the many things we did in Ladakh, was a two-day trip to a tiny village called Rumbhak through a snow leopard conservancy.

The journey itself was worth it. It was fight, for me at least, fever the night before had left me feeling weak kneed, literally. Every few minutes of walking was followed by huge gasps of breath, and a pause. Of course, on the way we managed to get lost, eat mangoes, follow a gurgling stream and go trigger happy with the camera but nothing compared to the joy of seeing the village late in the evening.

The wind was starting to howl, the temperatures were dropping and the legs were aching. The planned two-hour excursion had extended itself to six, and the village wasn't anywhere in sight. The desert dunes were barren, survival would have been impossible, why, we may have even had an encountered the rare snow leopard. Not quite sure we would have survived the encounter though...

As we settled into our beds at the home-stay facilities in Rumbhak, it started to snow outside. For one, who is so used the noise of a city, the silence was disconcerting but only momentarily. Tiredness and sleep overcame me soon and never did I sleep better.

I woke up early, courtesy a room mate and just glanced outside the window. The desert sand had given way to a virgin white. Pure untouched snow covered every inch of land for as far as the eye could see. I felt alive. I still do, every time I think of that moment. It lasted but a second but its memories will stay with me forever.

I just can't help but wonder, is home where the boots are or is it where the heart is?

does your flatmate do international emergency calls?

craig johnston
10-09-2005, 03:07 PM
