Kids these days don't have enough of such shenanigans in their lives and that's what's wrong with America.

auntie you are having a boy and a girl
auntie aubrey
04-12-2008, 05:07 PM
^ there are a number of people in my life who are convinced we'll have a mixed pair. and although that would be awesome, i'm kind of hoping in a very small way that they're the same gender. why? because apparently girls fall into a regular sleeping schedule faster than boys, and if they're sharing a crib then the boy's irregularities can disturb the girl. it's a small thing but when you start thinking of the logistics of feeding and changing and sleeping and feeding and changing and sleeping, i can see how that would make a difference.
it would be weird if it worked out to be a boy and a girl, though. because the house we're closing on this week was home to twins, a boy and a girl. the parallels would be spooky.

^Aw, you just never know what they're going to be like. My son slept like a rock from the day he was born. Before, even. Once I got to see him, I could recognize movements and habits that I'd been aware of as he was growing, but couldn't visualize without any frame of reference. That'll be interesting for you, actually...when the babies are bigger, you'll probably notice a difference between them if you can keep track of who's where. One may be more active, or stronger, or more wakeful, than the other, or one might move his or her hands a certain way. And then once they're born, you'll recognize which was which in retrospect. :D
You should also get the hub to start talking to your belly around month 7. They'll recognize his voice at birth, and that's one of the things that's most rewarding for dads since they don't get to feel them moving as much.

Ah, but the best one is this:
A young and unsophisticated American girl is swept off her feet by an older (but not too much older) French sophisticate. Her family disapproves, and the mother warns her in the bourgeois way in vague euphemisms about the corrupting influence of the French and their perverted sexual ways. When she worries to her French lover, he laughs, and says there are no perversions in sex, that whatever feels good is right, and, heedless of her mother's advice, off she goes to Paris, where the couple lives together in happy sexual congress for many months, and then, at length, they marry.
During the honeymoon, the Frenchman suggests a way to have sex that they have never done before. Horrified, the young woman weeps "Oh, why didn't I listen to my mother!?"
Perplexed, the Frenchman says, "But darling, don't you want to have children?"

oh god, not that big. everything i've read says it's not necessarily healthier for them to be ginormous at term.
i'm doing a lot of visualization. i read a study that was saying that they don't think it's necessarily any more beneficial for twins to go to 40 weeks than 38 because those last two weeks may actually be more stressful for the babies as they get soooooo crowded. so i'm visualizing that they will stay put until 38, and then after that it's fair game.

But btw the baby girls in that big belly up there were reportedly 5-14 and 5-5 lbs. when born at 38 weeks, so your belly is going to be somewhere around that size, believe it or not. :D I'm so jealous!! It's terribly uncomfortable and all, but it's an irreplacable experience.
By "big ol'" I just meant over 4 or 5 pounds, big for twins. ;) And at least at least at least 36 weeks would make me happy.

and so many go way early
we don't talk about that. my doctors have been emphatic about their last several twins-bearing patients who all went 38-40 weeks. so thus, visualization of 38 weeks.
also, one of my mom's cousins had twins back in 1976 and only found out she was having two a month before she delivered. they actually gave her an x-ray, can you imagine? times change. she ended up going all 40 weeks and each baby was something like 8lbs. i have no idea how she did it.
8lbs is what i mean by ginormous.

The following is a list of names that would be linguistically logical for twins.
FRAAAAAAAAAAAAACK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU, WEBPAGE.
do singletons have "linguistically logical" names? NO. they just have names.
twins are individual human beings, two unique human beings. they have enough reason to be close and share their lives without being forced into some ridiculously contrived naming scheme.
some of my closest friends since i was 5 are twins and the one question that they absolutely hate is when people say, "which one are you?" always treating them as a set has made them sensitive, and i don't blame them one bit.

Anyways I missed all games till now, on Sa there was this cool reggae/ska band playing live just two blocks from me and there were two Brazilian chicas making such excellent caipis and all the punks were dancing and their dogs too :) or at least wagging their tails with the rhythm (really! dogs like reggae mefigures), so I missed the Portugal vs Turkey game, but I heard Portugal won cos from somewhere down the road there came two cheers and sth like "Yay! Portugal!".
On Sun I had an evil pollen allergy attack (actually it felt like migraine meets flu) all day long, I felt so bad it interested me a flying sh!t who plays or wins. Today I learned this is due to Ambrosia such a plant that (normally not growing in Germany) spread north and is so aggressive that in my quarter (I just read that in the news) they will set in a special squads kinda to pick them beasts and deposit them in special garbage bins for Ambrosia only.
Yes and then I wasn't buying flags yet, first I couldn't get my ass out of the internet cafe, then my friend called me to meet. But the neighbour above me has a HUGE black-red-gold one, so I'll organise those of Portugal, Russia AND the NETHERLANDS :) (as a descendent of Flamic beaver hunters I have to ;)). OK, I'm now the parent of two almost-fledged pigeon squabs :o
The realtor was adamant that the roof of our house in Hyrum couldn't be fixed to sell until the family of four pigeons who'd moved in had been evicted, and she couldn't find anyone in the entire valley who was willing to go climb around on our steep front gable to do it. So last Sunday we drove up with bird netting and bird spikes and assorted implements of destruction to go do the dirty deed.
It turned out that the squabs were almost-but-not-quite fledged. I didn't feel like leaving them there in a tree to freak out, fly to the ground, and be eaten by the next-door-neighbor's cats, so I put them in a box and brought them back to Salt Lake with us. Now they're living in a cage in the spare bathroom, and I'm tube feeding them 3x a day with Kay-Tee Exact baby bird formula. We blocked off the access to the niche where their parents were nesting, so hopefully our roof-related pigeon problems won't recur.
But now I have pigeons. They're beginning to hand-tame. I'm a bit bemused by the whole thing. I feel a bit like Bert from Sesame Street.

I'd like to announce that I survived Friday the 13th, minus one functioning leg.
In a fit of youthful bravado I decided that there would be no better way of getting around my back fence than vaulting over the top, which worked well until I tried to get back the same way and twisted my leg in an unusual manner which it did not approve of and consequently stopped allowing me to walk on it. At this time I was of course over the back fence where no one could hear me yelling (which I did not hesitate to do), so after hoplimping around the perimeter of the house I was rescued by an angel who also happens to be a nurse and my neighbour. :o
I am now tucked up in bed with my laptop and a pair of borrowed crutches for potty trips and I'm told that the leg needs some time out to rest and sulk and then hopefully it will start doing its job again.

The ceiling in my apartment is leaking.
i came home last night around 5AM and found my computer and a couple of hard drives covered in water, as well as all the papers and contents of my shelves.
Apparently they are renovating the apartment above me and a pipe must have burst. I now have bowls collecting the water and it is making a nice drippy sound, though it will probably annoy me tonight. Our landlord has not been answering the phone at all. Luckily my computer has dried and it seems to work, but I must say that all of this is making me slightly annoyed.

2lbs 3oz. that's just over 990 grams for the metric folks. that's how much baby i'm hauling around in this thing that is now more transport vehicle than abdomen.
no good pictures though, because they're getting big and they move around a lot. still, i was able to see enough to determine that, yes, baby B likes to rabbit-kick me in the ribs. and, yes, baby A seems to think my bladder is a pillow.

^ i'm hopeless with fabrics and i've done two sets of ikea drapes this way. it's easier than you think. just be careful, hang them first, mark the length you're looking for, pin, and only then cut and iron.

^thanks, i made it! :) woo hoo!
well, with a little help from my mother. these curtains are enormous and i wasn't able to handle them on my own, i don't have a table or an ironing board that big.. so i went to her place.. it is quite easy indeed! measure, hold the fabric in place, pin, iron seam, iron with seam strip and cut off the rest! no fancy stitching stuff. and they look good too!
cool. 4 more to go... some other time ;)

I got my third tattoo a week ago. It's based on the Sweeney Todd movie, & I think it came out pretty sweet. No, I don't have a pic readily available; it's on my cell phone, & I have no idea how to transfer it over to the web. But it's almost exactly like this (minus the red "velvet" bag):

^^I have a friend who is a rabid Sweeney Todd fan, I'd love to see your tattoo when you've got a picture so I can rave about it to my friend :)
Announcing:
I won't be around so much the next couple of weeks as I'll be hectic busy. I've got a week off and I'm trying to cram as much in as possible which is challenging but fun :) Then I'll be off to capital cities to be even busier and maybe funner.

Capital cities of the states of Australia, I meant, not capitals of the world  If only...
I will be keeping a sharp eye out for all sorts of toe-knucklebones, you never know where continental drift may have taken them. I'll be in Canberra and Sydney.
I love going to cities and scavenging for bits and pieces of art and craft things, like wire and shiny stones. It got to the point where a city friend of mine started saying 'No diving!' every time we walked past a dumpster ;)
That's going to be part of the trip, catching up with friends and other people's rubbish, then the last four days of it will be an art school workshop sort of thing which I am very excited about getting into :D It's specifically 'drawing' (as opposed to painting or photography) to improve technical skills and I'm told it's very full on and there will be lots of important artists and art teachers.

One day when you are a star in the art world you will think fondly of those dumpster dives.
Perhaps you will also think fondly of your finest paintings hotlinked in the museum of the image association thread, unto eternity.

I'm turning off the phones here at the coporate reception desk that I've been temping at all week, and I'm leaving early. I am not going to miss that earlier bus today.
Damn. The phone just rang.
Good news. It was my husband. He will be picking me up and I won't be taking the bus. Maybe we'll go someplace fun.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as I put the board on hold. Please listen to some lovely musak from the seventies.

i think the fact that i mentioned how weird the whole concept of "dating" was to me is not going to play in my favor. Time will tell.

No, she wasn't very communicative while she was alive and things didn't improve when she passed away.

Over the years, I've found surrogates. They work pretty well - almost better.
I'll tell you one thing that's true. I've just about had it with noncommunicative moms. And I mean that as affectionately as possible.
Mine played solitaire endlessly for hours:
"Mom, we just found a nest of live baby coral snakes out in the gutter!"
"Mmm-hmmm."
"Do you think they're poisonous?"
"Mmmm. Just a minute."
"Denise got bit by one and her toe is swelling up."
(pause as she lays out more cards)
"Okay."
"Mom?"
"Hmmm?"
"Did you hear what I said?"
"Uh-huh."
Nowadays, I can say something like
"Mom, all the honeybees are disappearing."
"Huh. Oh well. That's too bad."
"Do you know what happens if all the bees disappear?"
"I'd like to know why my good paint brush has disappeared..."

:o Ach, you see, with me and my Mum, fault was on both sides. Now, it's only on one: mine.
The bees are disappearing in Europe, too. They have some parasite that makes them weak, then kills them. There're some experiments to pollinate flowers with bumblebees, even butterflies! It's ridiculous. Some people believe they can fly to the Mars and live there, when in reality, they cannot achieve the smallest important thing. :(

I'm drinking tea made of nettles.
It tastes and smells like stale urine gone bad approximately three weeks ago. It has a darkish green colour.
It's supposed to supply my body with iron. So far, it only makes me want to go puke.
brightpearl
07-13-2008, 06:15 PM
^Can you have a little wine? Soak the nettle tops in a bottle of good red wine, maybe along with some stone fruit like peaches or orange peel, for a couple of weeks, strain, and just have a few sips per day.
If you eat meat, beef and oysters are good sources, but so are beans/peas and dried fruits like plums and apricots.
eta...you are female, right? Too much iron can be dangerous for men...
YsaPur EsChomuw

I tried drinking a glass of red wine every day for about 4 months, but it didn't help. Plus, I stopped enjoying wine. :(
But it sounds so witchy, I'm going to soak some nettle leaves right now. That is, if I can find any red wine at home.

The acid in the wine helps with iron absorption. Calcium inhibits it, so if you take it with a meal with lots of cheese or canned salmon or whatever, it won't help as much.
A glass of nettles and wine is probably too much unless you're severly iron deficient. Just 2 or 3 tablespoons...
YsaPur EsChomuw
07-13-2008, 06:38 PM
I've been taking iron tablets for about 9 months. After the first three months the results were worse then before medication. I stopped drinking black tea and switched to another brand of meds. Last month a kind pharmacist told me I shouldn't take it after meals, because the absorption of iron is worse then.
Of course, for 8 months I took a tablet after each lunch. (Because I never forget lunch, but I might forget taking my meds.)
Tomorrow I'm buying a bottle of red!

^Hrm. Been evaluated for other kinds of anemia other than iron deficiency, or for some kind of hidden blood loss? Very important...
Yes, taking just the iron supplement on an empty stomach with orange juice is best -- don't take with other multivitamins as the calcium with interfere, and wait a couple of hours to drink coffee, tea, or milk. Get enough vitamin C? Also, vitamin A deficiency can contribute to anemia, so be sure to get those yellow and orange fruits and veggies -- it's the inside color that indicates beta carotene, the precursor to vit A. Not so hot on Vit A supplements as you can overdose on those, but not the precursor carotenes.
Whole grains can help, but sometimes going gluten-free is necessary, with even slight gluten intolerance.
And you might just be one of those people who needs to eat beef, though it's always good to try to stick to the healthier cuts like brisket. The kind of iron in meat (heme iron) is much, much more easily absorbed than the vegetable source kind.
Sorry for the nutrition lecture. :o
