Congrats Stephi! :D
I'd like to announce that I'm back (as of an hour ago) and exhausted and exhilarated and I'd forgotten that I could see so much and do so much and so many things could happen in just one week. It's been just amazing but I am really, really tired and I planned to have everything unpacked by now but my bags can stay on the floor for now. They all smell like city and they are full of dirty washing bright lights loud sounds fast traffic but my room is quiet except for a burbling fishtank and a little happy dog. I want to tell you about all the pretty things I saw but they are too much for one post with a tired mind so I will post in the happy thread another time. :) Hope you all had pretty pieces in your week as well.

Ah, as I'm here: I wanna announce that my thesis is printed and bound in 4 copies,
that I have all things I need to have to submit it, the form is filled, boss has signed it etc. pp.
and on Mon morning I will stand in front of the office of the lady which takes on PhD theses.
I would have stood there today, if this lady would have long opening times on Thursdays
(like normal offices), but she has them on Tuesdays and on Fridays she has closed.
Anyway I wanna announce that I'll praty this weekend (oh, well I also did the last weekends,
although I was not yet near to having all ready and there --> pratying is optimal anti-stress therapy :D).
Thanks guys :o I'm pretty bummed but you are the bestest. I'll let the rest of my life from now be cooler and nerdier. :)
^ Steph, that's awesome. Is it a whole heavy bunch of paper that still isn't as heavy as the work gone into it?
Enjoy your praty, I'm off to praty too, the third birthday this week  why was everyone so keen on getting born this time of year?

hm - July birthdays? maybe people were trying to stay warm in November?
:D
They must have had some other excuse in November; on this side of the equator it would have been spring. So maybe it was just the spring energy.
Oddly enough the next bunch-up of birthdays comes in November - I have four friends with November birthdays and then my own.
What about everyone else? Are your acquaintances' birthdays spread out evenly or do you have a pile-up in one month? Have you even thought about it before now?

Birth seasonality is actually an enjoyable little research topic, which is to say that a fair bit of research goes on around it in various specialty areas.
Here's an NYT bit (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C0CE0DD1F3DF931A35753C1A9669582 60&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=2) on it, and some areas popularly studied (http://www.wako.ac.jp/~nonaka/Summary.html). (Read the preface, with its beautiful red on pale blue very fine font -- mmm.)

You're welcome. :)
I'd like to announce that in a couple of hours it will be Katie's birthday. She will be nine in human years, which by current methods of counting such things (first two years = 20, then five for every one calendar year) means she is 55 in terms of her expected lifespan. I think she looks younger. But I am biased, because I want her to live forever. And as you can see, she is very good at conserving her energy.

HANDBAG
Frieda, these "facts"may or may not be true
and i am afraid it may end up being more of a debate than a discussion
but here is my copy and paste :) .........
"If we were to trace the origin of handbags, women would likely be surprised to know that they were first utilized by a group of men some 2000 years ago. Although wholesale handbags were not in the scene at this time, men in biblical times did indeed carry the equivalent of what we consider to be the handbags of today.
This practice came to women’s knowledge and from then on, its handbags became completely indispensable. Handbags, purses, or any other kinds of totes will forever be a part of women’s wardrobes. Although some men continue to don handbags occasionally, women have dominated the scene in the handbag industry."
(tomorrow we could discuss bagels and lox ??? ~"~

I am announcing that I ran the Human Race, and am most proud, despite the terrible conditions + a shockingly bad time
^^^Wow, I was just about to come and make an announcement about my handbag :D
I got a new bag.
This is a really big thing for me. I need a hand-luggage bag to travel with, and when I travel, I darn well travel, and I've been doing a fair bit lately. I don't want to be forever hitching up a shoulder bag or to have no hands free to find my bus/train/plane ticket. I don't obsess over shoes, or makeup, or my hair style, so I feel I am totally justified in being particular about my bag.
I've had my camping-brand backpack for years, and it's made of tough stuff but it is unbearably awkward in tiny antique curiosity shops with glass shelves. My other bag is a canvas shopping bag but it's no good for long hauls.
So I went and had some retail therapy at the local charity shop, and emerged particularly victorious. We're made for each other. It's the most beautiful patterned black leather, not too big but big enough, and it zips up. Most important, the straps are long enough to cross them over and wear it like a backpack. There's only a main pocket and tiny hidden compartment, so it's not really a handbag, which suits me, but it's not a backpack, either. I dub it my bagpack.
The icing on the cake: it comes with a little matching mini-bag, just the size for a pencilcase for my art supplies.
The cherry on top: it was $3.
Charity shops=my health spa.
I am announcing that I ran the Human Race, and am most proud, despite the terrible conditions + a shockingly bad time
I looked it up, what a name for a race :) but what an excellent idea.
I'm proud of you too now, such things are a real accomplishment to my thought. Congrats. :)

hey hey thanks - my friend Sallie is a pro photographer and got WAY better pix than I did of the burn (I was busy attending, not so much concentrating on my camera) - I'll post a link to some of those when I get one.
she's still probably on the road back from BRC - the late crew were leaving today and it'll be a 14-16 hour drive.
got my pix up on flickr and sorted (sorry, the nakey pictures of Anthony are now all set to private ;) ) and I've copied all the .mov files over to the mac for consolidation. inbetween all of this I'm spending quality time with a trailer full of camp crap and playa dust we've got parked out on the street. I'm negatively affecting property values, don'tcha know :)
I missed you guys too - it's weird that the board lost 15 days of posts, which is about the amount of time I was gone. it's as if time stood still for me here...
^Wow, it's like you're so important that if you're not on the board, it doesn't exist. ;)
Playa dust must be like sand when coming back from a beach vacation - like you've taken a little bit of the spirit of the place with you, and you keep finding it trickling off things or stuck in corners.

hehe, that does wonders for my solipsistic tendencies ;)
playa dust is a little more persistent than sand - finer, and gets into your stuff in greater quantities. I don't think it's possible to get rid of it entirely, no matter how you try.
the final night was the temple burn:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lukkucairi/2822130484/" title="DSCN1414 by lukku cairi, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3077/2822130484_350b7cffab.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="DSCN1414" /></a>
the temple is in deep playa, a long way from the main camp area of black rock city - this year, maybe a mile out. I had put some of my father's ashes in it, and my husband had put a picture of his dad in there too (he died a year ago Sep 8) - so we sat and watched this structure burn down for two hours - and while we watched, a dust storm rolled in. a cold front had arrived with winds sustained at probably 40mph, and the dust was incredible.
it's pretty rare to have a full-on whiteout at night, and I was caught without goggles or respirator. luckily our camp was downwind or I don't know how we'd have gotten home. my husband and I both had beacons - lights mounted on poles - so we went in front and the rest of the group followed us until we got back to the main camp area. we met many people who were completely lost and turned around, and when we got back to esplanade (the main road along the front of the camps) a few people came up and thanked us for leading them home with our lights.
it's sometimes hard to get back to your camp after the temple burn in any case, as people have begun to pack up and leave and a lot of the landmarks you used during the week have simply vanished (as well as the street signs being stolen). a lot of the city had come apart around us, but we didn't have any trouble finding our way home. my husband and I arrived at our truck, where we were planning to sleep for the night - we have a shell on the bed, and that's where we'd been sleeping all week.
I turned the truck around so it was pointing into the storm, and we climbed into the back. I turned on the LED bar lights and all the fine dust in the air was illuminated. we had a cardboard box of food and a box of Aussie wine, and we sat there eating our rations and drinking shiraz out of a plastic mug while the truck was buffeted by the winds and little handfuls of rain struck the roof every so often. I looked at my husband and had to laugh - his face and hands were completely white with dust, and he was wearing a full-length thrift-store faux fur coat and an antique fur explorer's hat that were both thick with it. with his wire-rimmed glasses, he could have walked out of a 1905 arctic exploration or a Phillip Pullman novel. I'm sure I looked just as extraordinary.

Why do hippies always have to set fire to things?
lukkucairi
09-03-2008, 06:26 PM
^hm, I always thought of "hippies" as those people who substitute patchouli essence for good personal hygiene, wear a lot of hemp-based clothing, and pretend to like eating soy nuts...those who enjoy setting fire to stuff I always thought of as "pyromaniacs"
in seriousness, I burn my art because it's the process, not the product. I guess I lack a religion and putting Dad's ashes in the burn helped me greatly to move on - judge how you will.
and when it comes to fire, I'm a lot like Beavis (http://mosh.nokia.com/content/3837533BADD9B562E040050AEE041F13)
I have so many plans and ideas and projects, but in the end I forget that people get tired. :o

owen:

they're both breathing fine, but owen needs a little positive air pressure right now to get him used to the practice of breathing. their apgar scores were great. anything over a 7 is considered healthy. jacob scored an 8.9 and owen scored an 8.8.

Well done klynne! Mmmm shrug. i was 10.000$ now about 6.000$. I'm on the same route. The Debit card is way better. But the problem is all the work expenses I charge on the credit card and then I kind of get paid for them and then I don't pay off the credit card. Yes it's stupid. oh well. Well I have had the most amazing couple-a-months, been citying thrice and damn I am glad to be back among the trees, but the scary thing is that I'm no longer completely clueless about public transport - I'm losing my country bumpkin, very slowly.
Some of the escapades I had you'dve had to see to believe! I saw some pretty things too and I missed having you guys to ramble at. I've filled up a whole sketchbook and spent more money than I realised I had, then spent some more. I've eaten barbeque beef jerky, cuttlefish flavoured crisps, 'lobster & scallop soup' and 'abalone soup' flavoured u-don noodles, oyster mushroom crisps, dried cured white mango that looks like rats' tongues, juniper berries, black sesame crackers that looked surprisingly like dead ant bits and after all that I wasn't game to try the whole anchovy crisps.

Will we have the pleasure to look at some of them?
Ah, I'd let you thumb through the whole book if I could :o but I never take the time to scan my sketchbook pages since there are so many. This one doesn't have so many artsy looking pencil drawings, it's mostly abstract scribbles and collected parephenalia. But if you're interested I could take some photos the next time I <s>steal</s> borrow a camera.
 I wonder if there's an unusual icecream flavour being born...
Most certainly!!
Actually all of the exotic foods I sampled were pretty good (or very good) but the 'rats' tongues' alone I couldn't eat. I try new exotic things on the premise that if a culture calls it food, it must be edible, no matter how strange I think it is. But they were so astoundingly disgusting I could not force myself to eat a whole one and even the smell makes me gag, and no one I gave them to finished a whole one. I did manage to convince most of the people who tried one that they were in fact 'genuine rats' tongues from Chinatown', and only told the truth afterwards.
good to see you - looking forward to being rambled at by you again soon
Thankyou :)

Hi Odbe :)
Okay, here's my announcement.
You've put your name on the new and improved National do Not Call List which does not expire (https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx). You have caller ID. You have Security Screening. You even have a little announcement that comes on before your phone rings that informs the caller that you do not accept solicitation calls. You've done everything you can think of.
But you're still getting robo-calls at ungodly hours of the morning.
If telemarketers/phone scammers are making you crazy (in the U.S., anyway), and you've tried to get a call-back number by pushing *69 to no avail, run a trace on the number by pressing *57 and notify the state attorney general by email that you've done that. Your uncooperative phone company must give the information to law enforcement officials. Plus, with this information, you may then file for full damages allowed in small claims court (a bargain at around five bucks) and win an award of $500.
Sigh.

Whoa! All mails disappeared from my mailbox, inbox and outbox... everything is gone. Bloody blackout.
