Oh, and btw, slots still open for Acting II ages 10-14 beginning Oct. 8 at the Multnomah Art Center. My usual students in this class all signed up for the play I'm directing, so this particular class is in danger of being canceled.
I need about 12 kids and a miracle, thanks for asking :)

Yes, I want to have my cake and eat it too. I'm a great teacher, and I do not want to become a grocery checker just yet. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm thinking that an employee discount at a food supply source makes good sense these days.

Go ahead - put me on "ignore" - at least it's not cafepresse linkage to ugly t-shirts. Although in this economy I might just try that too. Stay tuned.

I'm eating linguine and clams.

1 stick of butter
Lots of olive oil
1 head of smashed garlic
1 bottle of white wine (minus a glass to cook by)
1 bunch of chopped scallions
1 bunch of chopped parsley
1 cup of juice from the clams
3 cans of whole baby clams
Juice of 2 or 3 lemons
1 package of linguine
Parmesan cheese
Salt
Pepper

Wish me luck! Her name is Layla, but her nick name is Puppy Poo. We start class this week. She is a handful for being two pounds.

She seriously gets mad about certain things, most definitely about being told "NO" She is starting to listen now. Thank God. It is like having a kid.

I think I'm going to have to go and visit my mother a lot sooner than I was planning

she's really stubborn but I can kind of tell from the last few phone calls that her health is slipping, and she's not wanting to tell me about it - the chemo is beginning to really drag her down

I figure it'll be better to go sooner and help support her now than to wait until November and have her feeling really bad when I get there :(

^^^Nice photos! They're so pretty :D I'm impressed they let you hand feed them, ours have never got past glaring at us from a very safe distance.

Speaking of photos, my announcement is that I have finally got my major artwork well and truly finished and photographed and sorted out. The lockup date was 7th of September and I'm now emailing out the photos, which almost do it justice.

I thought I would feel a massive sense of relief and/or accomplishment and it would feel very strange after 9 months of work but it sort of just trailed off then it was done. I did keep having moments where I expected to go and work on it then remembered with a start.

If anyone wants the photos please send me your email address through PM.
I'm still thinking about putting them online.
The photos I've got (one's a close up) are 1.5MB together, if that's too big let me know.

I quasi sure have a job :):):) (could have signed it right away last Fri, but I said: "gotta sleep about it" => go there again on the 15th)

However, it's, at least for the first time, on a freelancer basis (YES!! there is something like freelance teachers!! didn't know that until last Fri) so I'll either have to live with 980€/month (my rent is already 460!!) or figure me out a second and third job - plus I don't get paid during school vacations, national holidays etc => I need something fix till Easter.
But the headmaster has given me an option on that fix thing (still a time-contract, but as an employee which makes things WAY easier) with paid vacations and excused sickness later-on (I will point on that thing again next week before I sign and tell her my Easter ultimate ;)), plus she'd fight for me to properly enter the teacher thing (is quite complicated as a side-entry, there's another PhDed dude at this school, a physicist, trying since 1.5 years now to get into the proper teacher ways => it's totally crazy we are more than qualified - at least in the subject(s) we teach (AND in the motivation!! they look at me everyway with awe and wonder when I say I wanna be "a teacher" - I heard the word "overqualified" MUCH often recently) - and (proper) teachers in our subject(s) are quasi non-available (particularly in Berlin which cannot pay much and does not take teachers in priviledged state service status anymore), nevertheless the bureaucracy sets weird rules (no unlimited position in a school before you've passed the teacher "Referendar" procedure - but a finished teacher "Referendar" procedure to get an unlimited position in a school at all )

So I'll go for that and try to find maybe a few more hours - it is a 8x(2x45min)/week thing I quasi sure got - in a nearby school (there actually is one close to that who MAY need someone for chemistry, I learn about that this week. Plus I'll bartend o the weekend (:):) actually).

Yeah and then maybe some private extra-teaching thing (for kids whose parents have money) - but that is sorta difficult to get into => pinning notes on street lamp post kind of thing - and not a thing to survive the 6 weeks of summer vacation (and the twice 2 week vacations before that on Easter and Pentecost)

Anyway, I already met some of my maybe future students (from the higher grades which I'm mainly to teach) - also the school speaker - and they were so sweet: they wanted to have me as their teacher ("Do you want to have our class in physics?? Please!!!!!") right away ("What? Only in January.... But, OK, as long you come!! ....you really come to teach us? Really! Cool!!") and one of them actually asked "Can I take you home with me now to explain me everything?? I need all of those subjects you teach!!" :):) - mewants to teach them very very!!
Under this freelance job I won't have (a) regular subject(s) (say: chemistry and physics for the higher grades) but a "project" which basically means extra-teaching in chemistry, physics, maths, biology, informatics to fill the holes in the school's lesson schedule (they have an "emergency schedule" atm for the dramatic lack of teachers => they fill the school day - 8h-16h30 with lots of "empty hours" and "projects" to keep the kids inside the school for it's a rough neighbourhood (not that it's THAT save for them inside, the headmaster told me something about drug dealing, violence etc => one of the main reasons why she first wants to test me with this loose freelance thing, she told me of a young female teacher - for German and biology - studied in the proper school ways with superduper grades who (without any troubles as certain real scientists with PhDs.... - the headmaster, a nice young woman, who has her job there now only since 2 months either, thinks this system svcks) started her "Referendar" thing, but ran away (almost literally!) 3 weeks later and not even appeared again in person at this school to annul her contract, she did that by letter via the main administration.... Ya, well, that happens if they send 23, 24 y/o girls fresh from university and most definitely from a "good" neighbourhood or even from very-outside-of-the-Berlinies areas to the deepest Kreuzbergies :p
Me on the contrary I don't fear the deepest Kreuzbergies (or Neuköllns for that matter where I also sent my emails => nothing yet, maybe they still sit in awe and wonder over my application form ;D) and I even managed (after insisting) to have some not-so-nice behaving (according to the headmaster this be the middle grades - this is a "common highschool" not divided into the three strains of education - low level up to 9th grade, middle level up to 10th grade, high level up to 12/13th grade - we mainly have in the Germanies, so those who still have to and those who further want to attend school are mixed together - methinks this actually better - with the still-have-to's concentrated in the middle grades - were also puberty is generally hitting ppl the toughest xD) kiddies tell me the direction to the headmasters office - in a definitely unnice way (They "welcomed" my approach with "Oh, noooo!!!" and wtf looks before I even had asked anything) but they DID tell me in the end :P (the headmaster laughed her ass off upon my description and commented it with "that's sweet!", hihi)

how about if you fill those extra hours till 16:30 with a science project where you teach them a bit more about stuff they care about.. like CO2 rockets and fizzing cola bottles and soldering radios/led light rc controlled bugs and other neat stuff?

^this very morning I was thinking about the mentos+coke fountain and such matters :D (boron acid is neat too - you spill it on the lab table and light it => cool green flames wavering across the table but not burning the table)
Of course I have to give them help to become fit in the curriculum for exams, or guide them in projects, talk/report preparations/research for the official classes, but there may be some cool experiments or an excursion (to BESSY the electron synchrotron maybe - synchrotrons rock :))

^^No more than 20€ Mr H Fox - unless there's some extraordinarily poetical dirtiness included in yours affairs - then you get 5€ extra ;)

I announce: Got a call this morning and now I have second job :) :) :) :) 10 schoolhours/week, regular chemistry and maths classes AND a FIX contract till at least summer (so I'll survive :) the school vacations with some brakeeping etc) and the clue - the schools are just like 2 blocks apart AND the (vice-)directors are matey-matey and so they'll coordinate the class schedules such that it fits for me ("it will be a task, but don't you worry, me and Mr ... [the vice-director of school#1] will figure it out, I'll see him this week" said the director of school#2 (also a woman like in school #1 - she sounds nice&cool on the phone => I got quasi-hired this time on the phone and I'm supposed to fill out all the paper work already ere the commission comes together)

I'd like to announce that I've finally had enough sleep to write about my wonderful adventures of the last couple of weeks.

I've been down in Melbourne for MiDFur, the Aussie convention for furries. For those unfamiliar, furries are a fandom/subculture based around anthropomorphic animals, which is right up my alley. I haven't actually been to such a meetup before, but I figured that with people who dress up like animalpeople, I couldn't go wrong.

So I painted my face, made some fluffy ears and a tail, went along to MiDFur and HAD A VERY FUN TIME. Meeting and hanging out with simply awesome people with awesome interests was simply awesome. I also ditched my dignity and ravepartydanced, discovering that it's good fun (especially with a tail to wave around).

Photos on my flickr. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/7377763@N07/tags/midfur/page2/)

After that I wandered around Melbourne and surrounds in a daze for another couple weeks, visiting various relatives. I arrived back in time to get my school results, with marks of http://www.zefrank.com/bulletin_new/images/icons/icon14.gifhappysuccess culminating in a university entrance score of do-whatever-course-you-want.

Accounting, then, for you,
Or something like it, and on to duel
With life without a clue.

But you – the one who’s part seen through
The hash your teachers make
Of art, who hope the business view
Is some absurd mistake,

It’s you I want to talk to here
Where we few reminiscers
Still pass it on and persevere:

(at first I thought the chemicals storage room may have self-afflamed itself & exploded => the long-established chemistry teachers (and even more so the physics teachers who think chemistry teachers do strange, dangerous things), expect it to do so one day or the other, you see, but none makes any fuss about it... but that's OK with me (so I won't make any fuss about it - and walk in & out of the storage room fast and say a little prayer every time ;)), it will mostly destroy the physics collection - "my" chemistry+biology collection is quite save, behind a thick wall - I checked that :D)

grade 11 starts calling me "Frau B" or "Doktor B" (a boy in the math class, I had to spontaneously overtake yesterday, tried it out cautiously, looking at me questioningly until I nodded - they're sooooo sweet :) maybe I can get them in maths & physics as a regular teacher) with B pronounced English (you know such that is sounds cool )
the notorious middle grade (9th? 10th?) boys call me "Brille" (glasses) - which is waaaaay better than the neat little street word some of them used (upon which I showed them my whole hand - figuring they'd know which finger's meant for them :p)

i have climbed up the career ladder, now i am no longer just this extra hour helping me kids in all sorts of subjects (in addition to maths, all nature sciences, english, german and advice in all matters that may occur - good books, good music, how to handle nasty ppl / understand the opposite sex.... :)) quasi-teacher, i.e. Naaaaaaachhiiiiiiiiilfelehrerin (as a certain student representant - who actually attended my extra-hours only to (a) look what's happening and (b) once to eat noodles with his mate in a quiet place - used to yell across the 200m corridors before he developed as a new habit(?? ....anyway NOW, i am prepared ;)) to sort of jump on my back on the electric stairs in the subway station in order to hug me in such a rough footballer (that is soccer player for los non-britaineros) fashion that's a wee bit breathtaking/destabilising ;))
no, no, no, my new official status is:

 illegal math teacher

(yo!)

(for with the sort of contract i have until feb 8 i'm not really legally allowed to really teach proper classes (two of them to be exact) in a proper subject (math) - but who cares, legal is for losers :p)

And Oh-bebe, if I had known one could get such a degree, I would've gotten one myself.
Both of you rock my socks with vicarious yippeees.

As for my own announcement, the crock pot was a success. My freezer is now full of 7 bean soup. This is the first time I have been able to cook beans until they're soft...I finally read that if you have calcium-hardened water, it complexes with the pectin in the skin of the bean, and they never cook properly. I used distilled water, and it worked like a charm. My happiness about this is disproportional to its relative importance, but I suppose we should take joy where we find it.

Stephi, it gives me a happy just knowing you're out there teaching :) Good teachers are SO important, you might never see a sign of it but have made a big difference for a kid who needs a cool person and not just an authoritarian.

Pearl, I also get a second-hand-happy from your wee discovery, kitchen science is exciting

Also, announce-me I'm learning a wee bit of German from a book and tape, it's slow going and bemusing but satisfying when something sticks. The die-nouns and das-nouns and der-nouns confuse me no end. It makes me wonder, who gets to decide their genders? When a new noun is created, for example if someone makes a new gadget like the iPod or a new we-don't-know-what like the Snuggie, how do you know what kind it is?

Stephi, it gives me a happy just knowing you're out there teaching :) Good teachers are SO important, you might never see a sign of it but have made a big difference for a kid who needs a cool person and not just an authoritarian.

:):):)

the really wonderful thing about my kids is that they directly let me know and feel what and how i just did :)

that with der-die-das - i think that just happens, someone (say from the new product's advertisement firm) starts it, maybe because it sounds "fitting" - at least i've never heard that a bunch of linguists sits over the articles for new words :D (for then they'd never get an article i fear ;)) - then everyone uses it, and it enters the Duden (the big book that harbours our whole words inside it's friendly yellow covers :)) thus.

the spelling of new/foreign words causes the major fuss mostly. and now, after all the (re-)reforms (to make everything about writing german simpler) no one knows anymore how to spell ketchup

Stephi_B
01-24-2010, 01:41 PM
oh, and however it's spelled, ketchup goes with both der or das - just like butter has der and die as (in this case a regional thing, methinks) choice - wonderful confusion :), you see!

anyway, do study it, if it feels good/fun to you :) it's worth it in any case - and one never knows how life runs. i just have it almost daily that now i can need many/most of the things i learnt/experienced on the go ("etwas aufschnappen" is the fitful verb for that) or without a "goal".

My scanner healed itself so I don't have to take it to the scanner-doctor!

Two weeks ago it went out of order just like that - one day it was scanning happily, the next day it refused to cooperate. It sent off wrong messages after initialising: like document loaded and feeder jam and similar ones when I clearly didn't load any document. Anyway, I disconnected it from my pc and then connected it again, but to no avail.

So I tried to install it on my laptop, but it has Vista, not XP, so I couldn't find it (haha!), although it produced the sample 'Congratulations, if you can read this page you have successfully installed your printer' page.

Frustrated, I tried to connect it back to my pc - and a miracle! It works again. :)

programs>accessories>system tools >system restore
then follow the simple directions to restore your computer to an earlier date when the printer worked (you will not loose any files) this usually works
and will just take a couple of minutes...
this is a fyi only....

I punched a porch window out 2 hrs. ago to express my anger at two male cats fighting next to my house who were screeching at one another and fighting over some slutty biotch (it's mating season and there are lots of fertile feral cats around.) I thought I was just tapping the window. After I got the bleeding to stop and realized that my finger was not going to fall off, I decided that rubbing it would not be a good thing.

I also had been watching ice skating and was distracted!!
