Mum is sick again. She is having a really good time with it and is quite cheerful planning for her death. While I am appreciative that she wants me to come visit so she can mark the things I'll want to inherit and get rid of the rest over the next couple of months, it's BEYOND weird and let's just say I'm having some trouble believing that she actually will be dead by Christmas, as she is planning to be.

YsaPur EsChomuw
07-29-2011, 11:15 PM
^ och, I'm so sorry, lukku! it's so hard...

but I admire your Mum's uplifted head against what she feels is approaching

brightpearl
07-30-2011, 07:02 AM
My grandmother planned her death several years before she actually died. When she did get sick quite a while later, it gave her a lot of comfort, I think, to know that my mom and I wouldn't have to arrange anything and that all her things were going where she wanted them to go. She wasn't cheerful about dying, exactly, but she was at peace with it and warned me that it would happen soon. I think people can feel it, sometimes.

If she will let you say it, maybe it would help if you express to her when you get there that you are sad about losing her and don't want her to go yet. Acknowledge the elephant so you can send it in another room, sort of, and get on with helping your mom with what she wants to do.

The course of cancer is notoriously difficult to predict, so you're right to be skeptical. :)

lukkucairi
07-31-2011, 08:47 PM
Thanks guys -

Right now it's more weird than anything else. She SO wants to go, and I am, frankly, ready for her to go. Whether or not she will go any time soon...who knows?

Philosophically, I've just gotten to this place where it's so much easier to want for her what she wants for herself. It's kind of spread out into the rest of my life. Not like I'm passive, but I feel this urge to get out of the way of things. It could be years before she kicks off, or it could be two weeks from now. The uncertainty is a really hard lesson :(

I'm in the airport on the way *back* from visiting Mum - she is better than she was sounding on the phone :p

Getting used to this "oh I'm about to die whoops no I feel fine" stuff is a difficult lesson. She's still quite ill, coughing all the time, tumors, advancing cancer etc - not getting better, just some days she FEELS like she's dying and some days it seems rather more theoretical. I suspect that she was pleased to see me, so she felt better while I was with her.

Thanks for being here on this thread and absorbing some of the excess difficult energy I need to dump off once in a while. Sometimes I'm not sure what to do with myself, and with it, and with whatnot. Everything else seems to be going along OK - more scans soon, results in September, and my husband and I will come back and visit her in late October. And she'll tell me *again* where the deed to the apartment is, and where she's put the extra bits for the fire doors, and not to sell her place too cheaply to the old biddy who lives upstairs :rolleyes:

Frieda: owie! Glad the investigation turned out to be the treatment! And no more cystststs for you!

As a courier I learned that speeding only gets u where u are going a mere 2 minutes faster, at 10-25% reduced fuel mileage, and u arrive in a stressed out mood.
Save a couple bucks, your sanity, and spend a couple extra minutes relaxing on your way to wherever.

else i find it's too annoying to drive among truck drivers, elderly and other idiots that keep overtaking each other with 1km/h difference. i get fed up and aggressive if i don't zoom past those people. and it saves me 10 minutes, not 2!

^Good for you!

Yesterday Hillary Clinton (http://news.yahoo.com/secretary-clinton-delivers-powerful-religion-speech-middle-east-034054319--abc-news-politics.html) edged out Bob Dylan (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/12/bob-dylan-slavery_n_1876623.html) in the wisdom and compassion department. I understand what Bob was saying, and I've often thought it myself, sadly, but our girl Hillary inspires me to look to a brighter day. It was a nice surprise.

Of course, the neighbors with several enormous Romney/Chair 2012 signs in their yard haven't spoken to me since I put a tiny little Obama sticker on my car, so it might take a while to get there.

^You know, I was outside with the baby the other day, and he said "Hi!" when he saw her, so she couldn't resist I guess. She asked how he is, and I said, well, there's some medical stuff going on...and I explained everything about the food allergies and the persistent reflux and how it looks like we're going to have to do an endoscopy :( , and I think I sort of smiled sadly and threw up my hands. She said, "You feel guilty."

Oh! Yes. You understand.

And she told me the story of when her daughter was born almost 2 months early, which at the time was pretty much a death sentence, and to their very great surprise, she was still alive in a couple of hours, and then the next day, and the next, and she's gone on to have a pretty great life, but every time she gets a migraine or a cold they both think it's because she was premature and they go over all the things they maybe could have done differently to keep it from happening.

It was a great relief to be understood, and it was truly lovely to have it come from an unexpected direction.

They still have all the signs up, but they did move the chair out of the front yard, so that's nice. All the warm fuzzies didn't stop me from laughing like a drunk monkey at this exchange (http://www.mediaite.com/tv/obama-trashes-romney-for-not-understanding-military-we-have-these-things-called-aircraft-carriers/), either, so I guess we're even.

^Well, it is okay. He is a little on the small side for his age now, but not too small, and he is doing fine developmentally, walking and talking and all that. He likes music, but mixes up Wheels on the Bus and Old McDonald, so it comes out like "Eee-I Eee-I beep beep beep." :) Still one more medication to try for a couple of months before he needs the scarier interventions to see if he has a hiatal hernia or really severe ulceration.

I do feel guilty, but when I am being reasonable I know that we are addressing everything as best we can. And most of the other kids in the waiting rooms have much longer lists of problems. I worry, but it could probably be a lot worse.

Thanks for your worries. :o

http://www.madrid2020.es/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Mateo280x180.jpg

Mateo is unbelievably cute, and he needs a bone marrow transplant (http://marrowformathew.com/).

Donating is much easier on the donor than it used to be, and in the US, to get on the both the national and international registry, all you have to do is send in a cheek swab. You can get on the registry at Be the Match (http://bethematch.org/Join/Join_the_Registry.aspx). If you live elsewhere, just google "bone marrow registry" for your home country, and you should find something.

Even if you can't donate because of your medical history, Be the Match can use monetary donations (https://secure2.convio.net/marrow/site/Donation2?df_id=3940&3940.donation=form1) to cover the costs of the kits and testing.

As his father is so generously keen to remind everyone, Mateo is only one of many who need donors, or who will someday. I have a friend who actually got the call, and he tells me it really isn't bad to donate, and it didn't cost him anything. I'm on the registry now, and I hope you will be soon, too.

xo,

I've been holding out, until now. I have my own little beach house and when I retire in a few years I will move there. Ah, salt water and sand bars.

Me too. I can't wait.

I'm back :)

And I will soon live inside a trapezoid, which contains further trapezoids, on the other side of the city, but actually closer to my favourite folks & work - and it's a coop flat :)

MoJoRiSin
03-16-2015, 02:35 PM
I am glad you are back Stephi_B :) !! It is always better to live near one's though favorite folks but for some reason i am worried you may be walking into a trap
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On another note my daughter is moving to Berlin in June... maybe I could forward your email or facebook to her?
Stephi_B
03-16-2015, 04:44 PM
No-no, it's alright, no traps, just trippy zoids :D But it will be tricky to align things built for 90° angles to all the none-90°-angles ;)
I'm no longer on Facebook, but I can PM you my email address :)
Flats are hard to come by (that's one of the reasons I joined the coop), flat shares are a lot easier (but often overprized, especially for people new to Berlin).
The young ones (I'm allowed to say so in the semibiblical age of 35 :cool:) are currently flocking in Neukölln, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and somewhat Wedding/Moabit/Tiergarten as well as Lichtenberg/Treptow.
Kreuzberg is neat in parts (those not too close to my soon ex-district Friedrichshain :o), but very expensive, and Friedrichshain - I'm fleeing from there :eek:, imho not nice any longer, party mass tourism with all side effects; Prenzlauer Berg and Pankow are quite posh and pricey, Mitte full of tourists and very pricey)... I'd rather go for Schöneberg, Charlottenburg, Wilmersdorf, those parts of Steglitz close to the subway, Moabit/Tiergarten, or Treptow/Lichtenberg - somewhat depending on where she will be centered for work/uni, but if either a subway line (http://www.berliner-zeitung.de/image/view/2014/3/24/26941402,26509020,dmData,BVGplan.JPG.jpg) (all those with a U like U-Bahn) or Ringbahn S 41/42 (it goes only about every 10 minutes, but it goes fast - unlike other S-Bahn lines - and crosses all subway lines - oh, and in reality, not on the schematic plans - Ringbahn looks like a dog's head (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berliner_Ringbahn#/media/File:S-Bahn-Ring_Berlin.svg)) is close you reach things fast.
Edit: That's quite a good side to find flats (Wohnung) or flat shares (WG/Wohngemeinschaft) for rent (Miete) http://www.immonet.de/berlin/wohnung-mieten.html
The number of rooms (Zimmer) refers not to the number of bedrooms (like in the US, as far I know) but to all rooms with the exception of bathroom, kitchen and things like a small chamber/closet or an extra toilet (ah, well I'm coop spoilt now, I visited flats with up to three closets or two balconies - some of them irregular pentagons! - or well, an extra toilet).
If she stays only for a certain period of time (some months or up to 1 year or so) "Wohnen auf Zeit" may be an option, often such flats are already furnitured (which is not the standard! usually there's only a gas oven and a sink in the kitchen - and sometimes you can take things the previous tenant leaves behind, for free or for some amount of money if it's still of considerable worth, again I would take care to not be tricked into paying too much --> google what a new thing like that would locally cost).
Edit2: Gotta get going again, now that the most favourite one has brought me the cardboard boxes and tended my nerves somewhat ;)
WOW! thank you so much for your thoughtful response.
I guess I should have mentioned her boyfriend is there already
but that she knows absolutely no one in Germany otherwise
I will figure out where he lives and PM you ....
Hope your own move is coming along smoothly
Ah, with a boyfriend already here it's simpler in any case :)
Is he German or already here for some time?
Something like a language learning tandem might be a good chance to get to know locals, I know a lot of foreign students who did that to meet new people and learn/improve the language in a fun way :)
Plus there is a huge English-speaking expat community in Berlin, getting into that is even easier (Craigslist etc.) probably.
Though in the more "neighbourly" (that is not in the touristic centres where there are more Air B'n'Bers than regular tenants) areas you can mix up with all sorts of people quite easily as you start meeting the same people in your immediate surrounding (Kiez) again and again ;) (folks are married with their Kiez :D, the more peculiar my trans-city move, but I'm indeed done and fed up now and looking forward to the new place :))
Here's a list containing tandem partner searches ("sucht Sprache") + offers ("bietet Sprache") of the last 4 weeks (after that the entries are deleted) where folks can find and contact each other for free via email:
Frieda
04-17-2018, 04:47 PM
It was called "Zonde", which means sin. We made the scenes ourselves with a director and a writer. It was about the 7 sins. Physical theatre so hardly any lines to memorize! I could send you a dropbox link if you have an hour to spare somewhere.
