View Full Version : Lost

We'll see if this thread takes off or not...

Here we collect things that have been lost - on the internet, in our minds, in the laundry, whatever. I like the idea of things being brought to light before fading back into obscurity...

the word

Nobody knows where it came from or what it means, at least as far as I've heard.

One time, while searching in my grandparents' attic, I came across an old cardbox box in between the slope of the wooden ceiling and an old metal radiator. Wedged inside was a smaller box, containing hundreds of letters written in spidery script, and a number of objects wrapped in paper. These turned out to be starfish, and amazing specimens: fine brittle skeletons with a mosaic pattern of spines. Each one was unwrapped carefully, brought into the light, then placed back reverently in its wrapping.

My grandparents sold that house a couple of years ago to move closer to the rest of my family, and I've never known what happened to that box.

I remember when my Dad told me there was no Santa Claus. I remember the room, who was where and I also remember the feeling of loss. I was wishing there was some way that it could be turned into something unsaid, so that it could be undone but at the same time I knew it was impossible. I was about 8 at that time and was very angry about the whole business of telling the truth about Santa.

I found one that looked almost exactly like that at the Fine Arts Association Theater in Mentor, Ohio and turned it in at the desk.

sometimes it's the things that you didn't even know you'd lost that you miss the most

Lost opportunity twelve years ago to punch the associate pastor's wife in the guts for telling my sweet five year old daughter that there is no Santa Claus and that anybody who told her there was is a liar and a pawn of Satan.

Since my husband does not believe in the immaculate conception or birth of Christ, and some self-righteous idiot tells his kindergartener there is no Santa Claus, who then tells the younger kids, then what major enjoyment is he left with around the holidays?
I guess the opportunity to forgive her isn't lost. Still working on it, obviously :o .

small moments of happiness change your life. it's hard to avoid who you are and where you've been. you move from home to the big city. the metal beams of then el tracks are always screaming. you're in a crowd of people who are fighting you for food. your dreams become shorter as moments are filled with the work of survival. there are times you come back home. a holiday, a wake, or sometimes a point of desperation or perhaps love. going there to remember a place, a moment... that fleeting afternoon of wonder. standing in the grass with your shoes at your side. the exact spot of discovery is your place to become that small moment all over again. everything else goes away. there is no more screaming of the el, the people who want. there is just silence, the sun and the memory of where you changed. the moment of what was helps you define what is. the city calls you back. looking up the valley of lasalle street, it seems different. not so big. not so loud now. it too has changed.

ron slattery's bighappyfunhouse has been linked-to here a few times in the past by me and others. he collects found photographs and posts one most days, with his own little "imagined" caption. they're sometimes funny, often beautiful and always poignant. today's was exceptional and personal.

I lost track of one of my guinea pigs. She escaped from the pen that I thought I had her secured in. When I found her, I also found her brand new baby. I didn't know she was pregnant.
