magpie, as clever woodland-creature yourself, you should give a self-taught waterskiing squirrel who made all her own equipment the credit she deserves.

JavaLog (http://www.robustion.ca/)
http://www.robustion.ca/images/photo_fpAnimation.gif
"It was invented in 1998 by Rod Sprules, when one evening at his home, he conducted an experiment where he used dried coffee grounds from his coffee maker filter, combined it with candle wax and then compressed it with a pen into an old cigar tube. It burned so well that he then made prototypes in a loaf pan and gave it to some friends to try … the rest is history! Java-Log was recently awarded patents in North-America and Europe for the invention of clean-burning, high-energy, fuel products comprised of recycled coffee. "

Cool! When I lived where I used a big woodstove 24/7 as my primary heat, my girlfriends and I would collect/save the dryer lint (yes, dryer lint) from our clothes dryers then make these huge batches of "fire-starters"....
Little bitty Dixie cups (disposable paper cups) filled w/lint then melted parafin wax filling them up. Once they hardened, one or two of these things under some split logs had a fire going in no time...NO CHOPPING KINDLING :) Parafin burns clean so it didn't fark up the stove pipe, etc. Had more 'orders' from people wanting them than we could ever make.
Bring us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, and your DRYER LINT! :D
Should have made a fortune on the idea!
