Those are neat, but if there is going to be a hand running over my skin in the shower, there had better be a warm soapy body attached to it.

I also use their skincare and shampoo. I just love the company.

So, I'm going to the company holiday party tonight and I'm wearing a nice silvery/gray lacy dress that hits above the knee and black shoes that are open toe.
Do I need to wear nylons?
Spicy Jack
12-10-2004, 05:35 PM
if you have smooth even colored legs and it isn't too cold and you are young, no.
otherwise, yes. make sure it matches your skin color - not too dark or too light, and not the shimmery ones either. bring clear nail polish with you just in case.

My legs are pretty pale (I live in Oregon... not much sun!) And I look younger than 29. My legs are in pretty good shape. And ... um... I think I'll get some during my lunch and see how it goes. Not shimmery, you say? Can you recommend a brand?

no brand in particular. they can be expensive and they all rip so go for the ones on sale.
you can go for something slightly tanner but nothing darker than your arms and neck basically. And if they are pasty too, you have to go pasty :p
yeah, no shimmers.

12-10-2004, 05:49 PM
Ugh, I disagree. Open toed shoes + nylons = nooooooo.
Better idea: get some bronzer or shimmery lotion for your legs, even go so far as to use foundation to cover up any unslightly spots, but don't wear open toed shoes with nylons!
melissa
12-10-2004, 05:53 PM
Hmmmmm, now I don't know what to do.
If it makes a difference I did go get a pedicure last weekend so my toes and feet look very good.

nylons are great if you want to change shoes and wear closed-toe. but if you want to show off your pretty toes, forgo the nylons.
I think since the mood is festive and it's a party, go with the open-toed shoes (less office-wear-ish) and no nylons.
melissa
12-10-2004, 05:56 PM
Even if my legs are pale?
Gatsby
12-10-2004, 05:57 PM
It's a dilemma, true. But I consider nylons + open toed shoes a bigger faux pas than pale legs. You can have nice-looking pale legs: it's December! That's acceptable.
melissa
12-10-2004, 05:59 PM
Ok. I think I'm going to be bare legged.

Spicy Jack
12-10-2004, 06:03 PM
there are toe-less nylons that are really comfy too - but they are like $5 for a single pair that will for sure rip.
beige fish nets are fun too - but yeah, not with open toed shoes.
if your legs look fine w/o nylons, don't wear them. just use shimmer lotion.
oh...do you have tat's on your legs though?
melissa
12-10-2004, 06:05 PM
No tats on the legs. Just on the shoulder and across the chest, which will be exposed in this dress. My tats, not my chest.:p

I do.
I carry around a tall one liter water bottle that I refill with seltzer water from the soda tap at work.
Technically they can't charge you for it, because it's just water, and it's like perrier.
I'm really not a fan of flat water. One can really tell the difference in the filtering system dpending on the geography of where you are drinking from.
I'll drink any water though, like a fish. My mom's an esthetician. She bred me right.

The perfect compromise. You're not pale-legged, but it's not pantyhose.
Also, for moisturizing lipstick, Revlon's makes this stuff called Moisturous.

Well worth the money.
Also, Maybelline's Moisture Whip rules all:
http://www.maybelline.com.sg/products/l29l415l416l426l427.htm
The main thing to remember about moisturizing lipsticks is: they are moisturizing, not long-lasting. You will need to reapply during the day.

You know, I was always warned against layers and was always a straight cut girl until a few months ago and I got the whole bit chopped, by Great Clips no less.
It turned out Amazing.
I am waiting until I can find someone I trust to do an asymetrical. I don't think Midwesterners can do it correctly. I'd have to find some 'hip teen' at Great Clips that was 'up with the times'.
Because I sure am not paying 65 dollars for some salon to do it when my hair is going to grow out of the cut in a few months.
I am so cheap.
Hee hee, I was grumbling about having to pay €15 to get mine done & in actuall fact is doesn't look quite as bad as i thought, it's just taking a bit of getting used to & boy is it nice not needing to do anything to it when i get out of the shower.

See, and I'm in between -- I have wavy hair, neithe rcurly nor straight, which is baby fine. It is damn near imposible to work with. And I always, always wished I had straight hair.
I wish I could grow it longer again, but I'm getting a little long in the tooth for the ingenue look. I finally got it layered last year. I had never done layers before because I thought I needed a blunt cut to keep it looking neat and full.
Nah. I just needed the right stylist. $40 a pop isn't much to pay to have my hair look better than it even has. I wish I'd had the nerve to do this 20 years ago.

Use your typical remedies on it: heat, ice, ibuprofen, orgasm -- for a couple of weeks, and if it isn't getting better or it's getting worse, see your doc. Also pay attention to whether it's stiffer at night or in the morning, and if it eases up a while after being stiff in the morning. You're still a bit young for the "wear and tear" type of osteoarthritis to be setting in, never fear.

I don't have any aspirin! Can't take it cause of my kidneys. But I will definitely keep that in mind next time I'm at the drugstore.
Do you just crush them, mix them w/water & apply to skin? How long to leave it on for?
Frieda
01-09-2005, 05:36 PM
well you have to make sure you have only aspirin and not aspirin with some odd painkilling extra stuff in it..
you boil some water, doesnt have to be much
you crush the aspirin it in a mortar until it's very fine
add some hot water, just a drop or two, it can't be too watery or it'll be dripping off your face..
then maybe add some fresh calendula and arnica leaves if you have them and crush those too, the leaves don't have to be completely crushed, just a bit to make sure the plant juice will come out.
then put a clean white piece of cotton fabric in the boiling water, make sure it is hot. you can also use a piece of bandage stuff you use for open wounds). don't burn yourself!
then get the piece of cotton out of the pan and put the aspirin mix on the hot steaming cotton and wait a bit till you don't burn your face anymore before putting it on your skin. you can leave it on till it cools off!
use moisturizer afterwards.. done!

ehhh just one more thing--
if you use plants on skin, don't leave the cloth on your face till after it cools off.. plant juices are green and yellowish and will dye your face in a very unhealthy looking color.. :D

My first major-intensive semester of college, my photography professor (a sharp-tongued, hard-to-get-to-know but brilliant Venezuelan) pulled me aside and advised that I invest in a line of Cetaphil to keep in my darkroom locker, as the long hours elbow-deep in chemicals and water would wreak havoc on my skin, and Cetaphil is the best gentle skin care around.
To this day, thank you, Dr. Valero.

Donell™ MCC is a non-toxic, non-steroidal mucopolysaccharide–cartilage complex, derived from bovine trachea, which has novel and significant pharmacological properties as demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. It is a complex mixture containing naturally occurring biologically active substances present in living cartilage. It is believed that these multiple components, acting together and in complementary ways, account for the remarkably broad range of effects on the disease process. There are no deleterious side effects accompanying its administration systemically or topically.
John F. Prudden, MD, MED. Sc.D., the Father of Cartilage Therapy, discovered the clinical value of MCC in 1954, when he was an Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. As part of a study to reverse the negative effects of corticosteroids on wound healing, Dr. Prudden applied MCC powder to open wounds. To his astonishment, the MCC accelerated the wound healing and reduced inflammation of the surrounding tissues. Under Dr. Prudden’s supervision, and in conjunction with other pre-eminent scientists and physicians, over $10 million has been invested in the research of MCC for topical and systemic use.
MCC is a form of connective tissue recognized as metabolically active and relevant to aging. It closely resembles fetal mesenchyme, the primordial tissue from which muscle, bone, tendons, ligaments, skin, fat and bone marrow all develop. MCC works in the body by stimulating the immune system. Its immunoaugmenting properties may act to stimulate growth factors and increase the local immune response.
It has been demonstrated that the components of MCC are of low molecular weight since they can be absorbed through the intestinal wall. It has also been demonstrated that topical applications penetrate the reticular layer of the dermis.
Many cosmeceutical products on the market today do not live up to their manufacturers’ claims because the molecules of oil and water complexes that are connected by soap stearates, which can also be irritants, are physically too large to penetrate the skin to any degree. Replacing the soap stearate with a mucopolysaccharide solves both problems by serving as a non-irritating transfer mechanism into the dermal layers.
Formulations of topical MCC-based products play an important role in treatment from a therapeutic point of view. The vehicle controls the release, penetration and ultimately the bioavailability of the primary ingredient, with the deep-layer effect enhanced by increasing occlusion. The vehicle also exerts a pronounced effect on the epidermis in terms of hydration, lubrication, drying, skin smoothness and protection. Donell™ products have been formulated by prominent chemists with the above considerations at the forefront to maximize the efficient release of the MCC material into the skin.

I'm a tomboy - reading this thread is like trying to read Klingon. Actually, that's not true, the Klingon makes more sense to me. :o
However, last week I went to Marshal Fields and had a consultation, and proceeded to spend $50 on 4 bottles of "face stuff." A soap, a lotion, an eye thing and some other stuff - none of which I've used. It's still in the pretty Este Lauder gift box. I bought it because I felt guilty NOT buying it. Now, I'm going to return it.
I can count on one hand the number of times I've worn makeup - that includes my wedding and prom. Both times I had a friend do my makeup. I wash my face with whatever body soap I'm currently using in the shower. I get a pimple about once every 3 years. I was 30 years old before I knew what a blackhead was - and I got it on my shoulder, not my face. A friend had to tell me what it was.
The lady at Fields told me I have a "blotchy complexion" and that I just "HAD to fix it." Yeah, ok, I made the fear purchase. Which I now regret and will be returning for a refund.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
By the way - the only shoes I ever buy that cost more than $15 are my Asolo hiking boots, my ski boots, and my New Balance gym shoes. The last time I wore high heels, I was in high school. I wore cute white ballet slippers under my wedding gown. No way in hell I'm going all "Marquis De Sade"-ish on my poor feet!
I do put lotion on my feet. Actually, my husband does it for me. I get regular foot massages from him, always with a lotion containing tea tree oil. I don't paint my nails, though I do use a nail hardener on my fingernails from time to time.
I use Head & Shoulders shampoo and Aussie Deeeeeep 3-minute miracle conditioner every time I shower. I have gorgeous hair down to my waist. It's healthy, shiny and thick. I do not use styling products on my hair of any kind - and have been known to jump out of the chair and run from the salon when the technician comes at me with mousse, hair spray, gel or assorted other chemical garbage she is intent on putting in my hair.
I brush my hair several times a day with a paddle brush. I do "100 strokes" through my hair every night before bed. It worked for my grandmothers, it works for me.
And actually, here's a "story" I wrote a few months back about "My hair and little old men." You might enjoy it - http://www.endtheillusions.org/?p=6
I know I enjoyed writing it - almost as much as I've enjoyed living it.

It doesn't try to do anything stupid and clumpy on the first go, and it doesn't make your eyelashes look all wet like waterproof, either. No, it's not Defincils, but for a cheaper price, it's pretty great. :)

I am in love with the Sephora stores and the Web site.
For great eyeliner, if you've got a Walgreens around, they carry an inexpensive line called "Prestige". The automatic eyeliner is fantastic and smudgeproof, but washes off easily. I have to sharpen the tip against a paper towel (rub tip sideways at an angle) but it works great.
Aveeno Ultra calming face cream is great. No SPF (i'm allergic) and not oily! Very lovely.

Avon Instant Manicure -- Dry Nail Enamel Strips
First, allow me to say that I never wanted to try this; I like pedicures but generally shy away from manicures. Someone stuck me with it, however, when they ordered it from my Avon person through me and then didn't pay up (I ask you once: then you can go fvck yourself and I keep your product if I feel like it). But my nails are pretty long lately and it was a rainy afternoon.
The success of using this product depends pretty much on one thing -- how close you can get it to your cuticle on the first go. From there on it's easy. The finish feels a bit like it could be easily marked, but maybe it will firm up. It saved a bit of time over doing base, two coats, and top coat with regular nail enamel, to be sure -- I was done the whole job in ten minutes. And the finish is flawless. One strange thing is that a package contains sixteen strips of varying size -- so really you get a single application. I screwed one up and discarded it and was left with five strips -- not sure what the hell I'll do with them.

I still use Origins Plantidote line for my face, just the face wash & face cream. My only wish is that it would have SPF in it. Still don't wear sunscreen. Bad Peef.
My skin is now dry instead of oily. Oh the irony.
I use this, but NOT the recommended 2-3 times per week. More like 2-3 times a month, if that. It works like a charm, making my skin as soft as a baby's behind. (http://www.origins.com/templates/products/sp_nonshaded.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY13511&PRODUCT_ID=PROD7480) Also people still think I am 25 or under. Muahahaha. THANKS ORIGINS!!!
I like Caress' new Cashmere body wash, and baby oil right after the shower.
For my hair I have switched to Garnier Fructis Curl & Shine, although I like Pantene's Hydrating Curls in a pinch. I liked Biolage's volumizing spray, until I ran out. :(
Anyone else care to update/share?

here's a real girly subject-- does anyone here use an IUD or IUS or what it's called where you live?
i'm considering Mirena (http://www.womens-health.co.uk/mirena.asp).. no more periods (well, al lot less), no more hormonal b*tch crap every month (well, a lot less).. but progesterone is nasty.. i'm on an estrogen pill and that helps control the acne.. i dont know.. you know?? help anyone?? :)
zenbabe
04-10-2007, 12:54 PM
I didn't know they still used IUD's.
Potential side effects from using an IUD include:
Mood changes
Acne
Headaches
Breast tenderness
Pelvic pain
Cramping (copper IUD)
Increased bleeding during menstruation (copper IUD)
Nausea
The Pros of an Intrauterine Device include:
Convenient and highly effective
Allows for sexual spontaneity
Easy - you do not have to do anything once it is placed inside
Lasts up to 5 years (progesterone IUD) and 10 years (copper IUD)
Progesterone-based IUDs may make your period lighter and less painful
Effects are reversible promptly after IUD is removed
Frieda
04-10-2007, 01:09 PM
yeah they do, a girl at work has one and she's happy about it.. she has the Mirena. i'm not going for a copper one anyway.. that's a bit too dangerous for me. but the hormonal one sounds ok, a lot less hormones than the pill because it's local.. you really think it's oldfashioned? the hormone ones are pretty new i think!
auntie aubrey
04-10-2007, 01:15 PM
i just can't get on board with the IUD. i don't like the idea of having a synthetic device hanging out in my uterus, for one. it's the whole idea that the IUD keeps the uterine wall in a constant state of mild irritation, which is why it can't maintain a lining and sustain an implanted ovum. i don't know that i think it's healthy to put a synthetic device in your noo-noo and keep it irritated all day, every day.
and then there's the whole method of birth control thing. my understanding (and i'm willing to be corrected) is that the IUD doesn't prevent you from ovulating and it doesn't prevent the egg from being fertilized. so you can conceive while using an IUD. the birth control part comes when the fertilized egg tries to implant and can't, so it just gets flushed away. i have a hard time feeling okay about allowing the egg to be fertilized and then flushed away.
don't get me wrong, i'm pro-choice. i'm pro-choice in that i want everyone to have the free and open right to choose. but i also feel it's everyone's responsibility to be as careful as they can to ensure that the choice only has to be made in the rarest circumstances. which, to me, means preventing fertilization from happening at all, if possible.
but that's just me.
Frieda
04-10-2007, 01:36 PM
i use condoms to prevent fertilization.. i get your point, it's different than prevention. from what i understand of it, the progesteron makes the uterus unfit for pregnancy by preventing the mucus to build up, similar to when a woman is breastfeeding, apparently.. so the uterus is not as irritated as with a copper coil.. but i guess it'll always cause some irritation.
Avalon

so you can conceive while using an IUD.
I have a friend with a son and a hysterectomy to prove that very point. Nothing, short of complete abstinence or sterilization, is fool proof. Everything has it merits and drawbacks...some are just more permanent than others.

if bleeding isn't your thing, i can personally attest to the effectiveness of seasonalle. 4 periods a year? love it.
of course what i didn't love was the gradual decline of my sex drive until i felt like a sexless lump of coal. of course, it took about 6 months to end up there, but still. finally i realized that i'd also slowly descended into hormonally-induced sadness that i couldn't seem to drag myself out of. oh and by the way, if hormone based birth control seems to make you put on weight, you've got that to look forward to, as well. i went off of it about 4 weeks ago and i've got to say, the rebound was almost immediate.
just thought i'd throw that out there. fewer periods is awesome but to get there you've got to do some serious hormonal mucking about. which may mean side effects.

Hi all, if I may venture into the contraception debate with a suitable degree of humility... My ex (the first one, you know, the mad one) had an IUD, the copper version, and from my point of view, as the bloke, it was marvellous, no responsibility at all :D She was a very moody woman to say the least, but IIRC her moods were worse around ovulation AND menstruation as she had issues (I think) about getting fertilised and then losing those fertilised cells before implantation: there must be some immediate hormonal changes between fertilisation and implantation, no? So it may even make PMT worse, if that's any consideration.
Been using condoms ever since. I like to know where my 300 million little breeders go after they run off ;)

oh i've tried over the past 15 years, i've been on 11 different kinds.. i use Femodeen now which turned my period into 12 days instead of 18.. the others didn't work for the period thing, or gave me zits, or headaches and depression.. and i got migraines from the progesterone pill. so that's why i'm

Whew, it's a good thing we didn't discuss the secret handshake!
Although, in the interest of full disclosure, I should say that I'm really very much a tomboy. Am I still allowed in here? I do wear lipgloss sometimes.
Hey Frieda, there are a couple of interesting studies on the effectiveness of Chinese medicine on menstrual problems (http://www.yinyanghouse.com/treatments/acupuncture_for_uterine_bleeding)that don't respond well to Western treatment. I've had a couple of clients that used both the herbs and accupuncture for gynecologic stuff, to good effect. Also, if your childbearing years are behind you, or when they are, you can think about endometrial ablation (http://www.novasure.com/index.cfm). I'd suggest reading more about that before deciding, however; medscape.com is a good resource. You can search MEDLINE from there, and that's what most doctors use for their own research.
I hope that helps. I'm a pathological helper. :p
PS The salsa/lipgloss thing...What I meant is that if there's anyone who doesn't like the tingle of even mild salsa on the tongue, they'll probably find the BB's lip shimmer tingle on the lips disconcerting. :) I love it, though.

Depo did the complete opposite for me. I bled all the time! 24-7 for those three months....
There have also been speculations that depo has a link to chronic cystic acne in some women. All I can say is that it was a miserable experience.
I basically gave up on trying to find the right birth control to help regulate my miserable periods, (cramps so bad they induced fainting, super plus tampons every 20 minutes) and after a year or two they finally got to something one might call "normal". (Pay the cell phone bill, start the period the next day). Condoms have always been a neccessity and now they are even more so, but at least I dont have to feel less than myself because of some foreign hormones, even if it is a pain in the ass!

Mascara! I found Lancome Hypnose, two tubes for 38 bucks at Costco. It doesn't seem to come off under normal circumstances, and from the review I read on Paula Begoun, the waterproof Hypnose clings like a limpet until you use eye makeup remover.
Going back a bit to just before Christmas when I was saying goodbye to a lot of people (many of whom wore makeup), and seemed to spend a lot of time watching them cry, it seemed as though the women who used the two-step products (with the white primer and then the dark colour as the second coat) experienced the best mascara longevity under duress. Having tried one of these products, I can say that it looks and wears just swell but I don't think the extra time required makes it competitive with Hypnose.

Hypnose is less smudgy than Definicils. Definicils is the most pleasant to put on because it's a thinner formula, but that means it doesn't stay on all that well.

i used to wear debbie gibson's "electric youth" fragrance. the bottle had a hot pink plastic spiral inside. i won't tell you how long ago that was. for all you know, it was last week.
also, i have a healing gardens fragrance (organic honey or something) but it doesn't linger. i spritz and it's gone. i spritz again and it's gone. i hose myself down and ask my dearest husband "what do i smell like?" and he goes "umm.... nothing?" quite disappointing.

Funny you should mention that. In my quest for Champs Elysees by Guerlain, I found a few bottles of Electric Youth still for sale. One site wanted almost $100 for it, and another wanted $40.
Electric Youth perfume is one of the only things my sister and I have ever agreed on. Also, I may or may not still have a bottle around here. *cough*
I HATE perfumes that disappear. Hate. If I wanted to smell like nothing...I'd spray on nothing!!!!
