I like to use citrus shower gel and vanilla perfume. Makes me smell like a sugar cookie instead of a sultry temptress, but I don't care.

And can I just say that I hate shaving? I do. I hate it. :)

auntie aubrey

shaving is tolerable if you do it in a bubble bath. shaving while standing in a slippery tub? if you're a klutz like me it's like being asked to juggle knives.

On a whim, without any prior sunshine, bronzer, or sit-ups, I tried on bathing suits this morning. Bikinis, too. Under flourescent lights.

^ ohhh yeah... i recognize that feeling :( i have a very pale skin, people always comment on it.. these days i just try to make comments about discrimination based on skin color.. you don't ask a guy with a dark skin why he's so dark, right??

i think it's about time that the Rubens shape gets fashionable again :D

^5 Brightpearl! I was reading this thread and starting to feel worse and worse. But then I found you :) You are not alone in the tomboy world.

I've only worn makeup twice that I recall. Once at a friends birthday party when I was 9 or so. I didn't know what was what so I made my self a kitty face, mascara for whiskers, etc. I won the "ugliest monster" award.. Put that on top of my list of my 'triggers' someday when I'm face to face with a shrink.

And second, at my brothers wedding. He cried when he saw it which just made me angry. I'm me. I changed myself for him and it made him happy. Bleh. Of all the sacrifices I've made in my life for him, it was makeup that made him show emotion.

I still don't know what the hell most of the things you all ladies mention in here are. I don't wear perfume, hate it and couldn't if I wanted to (bad allergies which may be why I hate it). I'll shave my pits often, legs when it's summer but I'm white like zenbabe and my hair is even whiter, you can't see it. I use the most bland lotions (also because of allergies, I do like the smells of some.) Don't tan, skin cancer in my family and with my complexion? Not worth it, but I admit I wish I could.

Fashion? Fashion is what doesn't hinder my ability to move and keeps me at a good temp. Hair? Long and in a ponytail 99% of the time.

Sometimes it hurts, sometimes I wish I knew how to 'be a lady' or 'woman'. I often hear "I bet you clean up nice" which hurts like hell, but most of the time, I'm just me. And for me, that means smelling like airplane fuel, jeans with grease stains, my hair pulled back to avoid getting in my face in the cockpit, shoes and shirts that won't hinder my ability to control my bird and won't catch fire easily in case of emergency, no petroleum based lip products (with an O2 mask? Can we say FWOOM!), and my boy in the seat next to me teaching me to do aileron rolls.

I love ya all though, beautiful in every thing we do!

(and am I the ONLY low posts person on here? Holy crap no one under 17 brazillian posts anywhere! I'm an outsider!) >>> Edited : damn long post... sorry!

pros
smooth
no lumpy clumpies
no red watery eyes, despite my allergies!

cons
it smudges
it's not really waterproof. well, really not. like, no way waterproof. you can actually wash it off under the tap.
no curl effect

^^ the tomboy isn't me, harrier. And it's true you shouldn't tell any daughters you have that you hope they're tomboys. Sure way to get them to refuse to wear anything but pink.

This isn't going to sound like a girlie thing at the outset, but you know what I love? My old fashioned reel mower. No ripping my shoulder out of the socket trying to start it, no gas fumes, and I can mow around the caterpillars and wildflowers. And when I mow the quarter acre yard, I don't have to work out that day.

Speaking of feminine persuasion and toast, I'm in the market for a miter saw. Anyone have suggestions. I keep drooling at the insane dewalt dual bevel compound 12" but I think it is overkill as this is my first one.

I want to get a bit more into woodwork in my free time. My grandpa was pretty much the only one in my family who ever supported my 'manly' habits. Bought me a telescope and microscope on birthdays instead of dolls and loved when I started flying (he was a pilot too, but I didn't know until then). He was a wood/metal worker miner guy.

I don't know what that had to do with anything. It's early.

Harrier, you asked earlier in the thread about miter saws? The one I use is a DeWalt 703 Compound Miter Saw. It was relatively cheap, and it cuts accurately enough. Measure twice!

Now for a well-deserved and very cold shower. Who knew it was so freaking hot in Texas?

Utah's pretty sunny - I don't worry about being tan (I freckle) - I just try to avoid a farmer tan where possible. long sleeves or no sleeves...and sunblock.

my mother just visited and left me three jars of L'Oreal face cream - I'm not sure how to feel about this! the older I get, the vainer I discover myself to be, though.

just wondering-- when do you people actually get to be in the sun?

iīm either at work or commuting from 07:00 - 19:30 during weekdays, when i do grocery shopping in the weekends i get subjected to, maybe, one hour of sunshine in total, sometimes on sunday i do have time to relax for an hour or something, but other than that.. no sunshine for me!

my sis-in-law is who turned me onto the nivea, but she is half mexican so she got the one that is for darker skin. Is it just us white girls that get the orange streaks because she has been using it for a while and it just makes her legs kind of glowy.

We walked about a half a mile to get some mexican food and when I got home, I was already sun burned.

I can't be out in the sun that much, even with 45 spf, I still get burned. :(

sunrise ~ 5am, sunset ~9pm, 1 hour dog walk sometime in between those hours, usually daily...that's the main onslaught.

doesn't anyone else here have a dog to walk and a park nearby?

Frieda
06-17-2007, 06:33 PM
well, being away for at least 12 hours a day, a dog wouldn't be a good idea i guess. and besides, sun sets at 22:30 here now but after 19:30 it's not strong enough anymore to get a sunburn.

maybe if i had a mother-in-law in wyoming with a desert nearby and money to go on vacations, i would get to spend a little time in the sun.. :D

I get 2 breaks, 15 minutes each. I have a walking buddy, P. She gets cranky if I try to skip our walk. We walk around the back of the business park, up & down some hills for our 15 minutes. I don't know what we're going to do when it gets snowy out. I have taken my walk inside the building when it's rained, but that would get old twice a day every day in the winter.

I am allergic to everything under the sun, so in the AM's I put on Oil of Old Lady for sensitive skin with an SPF of 15. For my chest I am running out of options. The Coppertone Waterbabies made me break out. The Hawaiian Tropic made me break out. I am thinking some Aveeno at this point, otherwise I will have to break down & go to the Origins counter & get some.

Frieda, do they have the Mystic Tan there?

I don't consider myself "girlie" anymore, x it is, however. The ozone layer is being lost as a result of CFC emissions, which allow more sun radiation into our atmosphere. Years ago, in the Carribean when my job as cook on a great, old schooner caused me considerable overexposure. I never wore sunglasses then, and in '98 was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma on my eye lid. Aaahhhgghhhh! The lump on the lid was ignored by hlth care professionals for a number of years, long story short:

Wear sunglasses and limit your exposure to any reflective sun exposure.

You girlies are dear to me! So are some of the guys, and yes, you'll find me under my hat.

^^ no kidding!

those ads are freakish - there was a whole series of them! this was something weird about the post-war era - people got really super-obsessed about their bodies - it wasn't just the Lysol douche, but a whole slew of brands marketed to both men and women for killing just about every kind of bodily odor.

I recently ran across a comic-book style ad for Kolynos toothpaste, where a fetching Betty blonde is dumped by her boyfriend for having "dental double trouble" aka halitosis and "dingy teeth" - wish I could remember where.

but seriously - in the 50s, how many men put their faces near enough to their wives vaginas to notice a smell or lack thereof? I wasn't aware that Good Housekeeping was advocating cunnilingus way back then.

the Lysol ads are alarming - makes me wonder if they've reformulated the product much since then?

In June, the straps on two of my favorite V.S. bras broke, so I have been boycotting girlie this summer. I figure it was providence. No bras, no nail polish, only occasionally using any hair removal( screw 'em all!), very messy and unkempt hair, no hair dye, natural colors or otherwise, no make-up(just eyebrows, as I have none), no socks, no shoes. It has been an awesome summer, and my tootsies tell the tail with there punch-line giving scars.

My B-day is on labor day, and one of my friends is taking me out for a spa day. This is something I cannot boycott, as it is a gift, but I will still be highly adamant about non-girlie behavior. I am actually a little excited to give the answer to one of the technicians that day when I am asked what my regimen is. I am just going to tell them that they could not have had my summer and a regimen too.:)

^^ godiva wa sone of the first lush shampoos i ever tried. it was much nicer to my hair than "karma" and "new".

if you gals could see my shower. i had to buy one of those tension rod corner shelving systems because i had too much lush stuff to be contained in a single caddy. today i shampooed with "i love juicy." my favorite thing now is mixing "olive branch" and "happy hippy" on one scrubby. the smell is fantastic. although today i felt like i needed a little exfoliation so i used some of my own soap instead.

also, for sensitive skin and rosacea i would absolutely 100% recommend fresh pharmacy. aquamarina is pretty damn good, too. but if you have to buy mail-order aquamarina's consistency from batch to batch isn't great.

M'kay, I don't usually weigh in on this in a public place without being asked, but I'm posting this because so few women will be told of the risks by their caregivers and this article makes my head explode. A Cesarean that is needed by the mother or baby or both, or one that is judged by the mother (or her family) to be the best available option, is a beautiful, wondrous thing. It saves lives and it allows the mother to control her experience to some extent. But Cesareans done for convenience, with no medical indication, and without giving the mother thorough information about the associated risks to her and her future children's health, lead to an indefensible increase in the maternal death rate. Not covered in this article is the slight but real increase in placental problems and unexplained stillbirth after 34 weeks in subsequent pregnancies, and an increased later risk of hysterectomy and uterine rupture for mom. One of the most commonly given reasons for elective Cesarean is fear of a normal labor. While Cesarean over an induced labor is a tough call given the statistics, a naturally-occuring labor is clearly safer than an elective Cesarean. The national rate is nearly double the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' own stated goal of 15%. And it doesn't come without cost.

In general, childbirth is very, very safe, but though there is a level of risk that can't be eliminated, your choice of hospital and caregiver will affect your health directly. The last story in this article is a hideous example of how poor routine care results in real problems. If you are pregnant, you need to ask your OB or midwife what their Cesarean rate is, ask around about which hospitals in your area have low rates of infection and death, and do all you can to stay healthy and well-informed.

By MIKE STOBBE, AP Medical Writer

ATLANTA - U.S. women are dying from childbirth at the highest rate in decades, new government figures show. Though the risk of death is very small, experts believe increasing maternal obesity and a jump in Caesarean sections are partly to blame.

Some numbers crunchers note that a change in how such deaths are reported also may be a factor.

"Those of us who look at this a lot say it's probably a little bit of both," said Dr. Jeffrey King, an obstetrician who led a recent New York state review of maternal deaths.

The U.S. maternal mortality rate rose to 13 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2004, according to statistics released this week by the National Center for Health Statistics.

The rate was 12 per 100,000 live births in 2003 — the first time the maternal death rate rose above 10 since 1977.

To be sure, death from childbirth remains fairly rare in the United States. The death of infants is much more common — the nation's infant mortality rate was 679 per 100,000 live births in 2004.

Maternal deaths were a much more common tragedy long ago. Nearly one in every 100 live births resulted in a mother's death as recently as 90 years ago.

But the fact that maternal deaths are rising at all these days is shocking, said Tim Davis, a Virginia man whose wife Elizabeth died after childbirth in 2000.

"The hardest thing to understand is how in this day and age, in a modern hospital with doctors and nurses, that somebody can just die like that," he said.

Some health statisticians note the total number of maternal deaths — still fewer than 600 each year — is small. It's so small that 50 to 100 extra deaths could raise the rate, said Donna Hoyert, a health scientist with the National Center for Health Statistics. The rate is the number of deaths per 100,000 live births.

In 2003, there was a change in death certificate questions in the nation's most populous state, California, as well as Montana and Idaho. That may have resulted in more deaths being linked to childbirth — enough push up the 2003 rate, Hoyert said.

Some researchers point to the rising C-section rate, now 29 percent of all births — far higher than what public health experts say is appropriate. Like other surgeries, Caesareans come with risks related to anesthesia, infections and blood clots.

"There's an inherent risk to C-sections," said Dr. Elliott Main, who co-chairs a panel reviewing obstetrics care in California. "As you do thousands and thousands of them, there's going to be a price."

Excessive bleeding is one of the leading causes of pregnancy-related death, and women with several previous C-sections are at especially high risk, according to a review of maternal deaths in New York. Blood vessel blockages and infections are among the other leading causes.

Experts also say obesity may be a factor. Heavier women are more prone to diabetes and other complications, and they may have excess tissue and larger babies that make a vaginal delivery more problematic. That can lead to more C-sections. "It becomes this sort of snowball effect," said King, who is now medical director of maternal-fetal medicine at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

The age of mothers could be a factor, too. More women are giving birth in their late 30s and 40s, when complications risks are greater.

Other characteristics of the maternal mortality rate include:

_Race: Studies have found that the maternal death rate in black women is at least three times greater than is it is for whites. Black women are more susceptible to complications like high blood pressure and are more likely to get inadequate prenatal care.

_Quality of care: Three different studies indicate at least 40 percent of maternal deaths could have been prevented.

Sometimes, there is no clear explanation for a woman's death.

Valerie Scythes, a 35-year-old elementary schoolteacher, died in March at a hospital in New Jersey — the state with the highest Caesarean section rate. She had had a C-section, as did another teacher at the same school who died after giving birth at the same hospital two weeks later.

However, Scythes died of a blocked blood vessel and the other woman died from bleeding, said John Baldante, a Philadelphia attorney investigating the death for Scythes' family.

"I'm not sure there was any connection between the two deaths," Baldante said.

Also mysterious was the death of Tim Davis' 37-year-old wife, Elizabeth, who died a day after a vaginal delivery at a Danville, Va., hospital in September 2000.

She had a heart attack after a massive blood loss, Davis said. It's not clearly known what caused the heavy bleeding. There was no autopsy, he said, a decision he now regrets.

Two previous births had gone well.

"Nothing led us to believe anything was wrong with this pregnancy. She was like a picture of health," he continued, noting she had been a YMCA fitness instructor.

A lawsuit against the hospital ended in a settlement. Davis also sued the obstetrician, but a jury ruled in the doctor's favor.

The child born that day, Ethan, starts second grade next week. "He's a happy kid," Davis said. "He's just never had a mom."

---------------------------------------------------
End of soapbox; let's all go back to talking about soap. This stuff is important, but that's more fun. :)

i watched a show today about birthing at home in a wading pool. the midwife they were talking to said the statistics for risk factors between hospital verses home birth are fairly comparable. her example was that you could have a baby born at home that needed immediate attention, and by the same token you could have a baby born at a hospital that contracted an infection (which is not uncommon) because of the exposure to the hospital environment.

i'm very intrigued by the at-home concept.

^ that post just barely qualified as a coherent thought. my apologies.

brightpearl
08-24-2007, 10:17 PM
^No, that's on-topic. Most of the researchers agree that for well-prepared, skillfully-attended moms can safely give birth at home, but that it's a good idea to be within "20 minutes to incision," meaning, if there's a problem, you can get to a hospital and prepped for emergency surgery w/in 20 minutes. I personally feel it's best to be attended by a certified nurse-midwife, but there are good licensed midwives as well.

Some say the safest place to be, barring any known medical factors, is where mom feels safest, because that's where her labor will progress the best. I have to say that I'm still a bit wary of home birth, maybe mostly because I think most US moms would find it easier to cope with the worst-case scenario if it happened at a hospital rather than at home. In that way, it's a psychological issue. But I also think that where there are options in between home and huge, mass-care hospital, it's a good idea to explore them. Some birth centers are really good, and sometimes midwives deliver at smaller hospitals, etc. The best options vary a lot by where you are...

auntie aubrey
08-25-2007, 12:44 AM
one of the things they mentioned on the show i was watching was making sure only women who were very healthy with excellent prognoses should deliver at home. in other words, they should take the whole of the pregnancy and the overall health of the mother into careful consideration and only those who posed the least risk should consider home delivery.

all i know is, i dislike the idea of a hospital deciding to medicate women to advance labor and move things along because they want to keep the delivery on schedule. or leap too quickly to the c-section option because it's such a common thing in a hospital setting.

also, i know a couple of women who scheduled their c-sections because they wanted to work giving birth around vacation time. that doesn't seem quite right either. but i guess it's all about choice.

trisherina
08-25-2007, 01:41 AM
I want only to point out that it's not even possible to be sure you are "20 minutes to incision" IN a hospital in Canada.

In the West we do not accept the notion that people can die of anything before they become pensioners, and late pensioners at that.

brightpearl
08-25-2007, 07:41 AM
^I think one of the reasons giving birth can be transformative is because there is always the possibility that you can die. It's very small here, but we are lucky, and going through labor touches mortality the same way it touches life. That's what makes it so powerfully beautiful.

Auntie, I really agree that making a normal birth medicalized often leads to more problems, but at *most* hospitals, with some doctors, you can get a birth with very little intervention if you know what to ask for. And at some birth centers, it's even better -- very little routine medical intervention, and they're often next door to a hospital or even set up to do what needs doing on-site.

And I think it's true that scheduling c-sections around vacations should be an option if an informed mother really wishes it, but you're right that it isn't a good idea in most cases. It does raise several risks, and too often the women aren't told that. A c-section is major surgery, and it's painful to recover from, and things can always go wrong for mom or baby that wouldn't otherwise have happened.

But I'm going to shut up about this now. :D If anyone has any questions, tho', it would be fine to pm me.

i dont fit them-- do you wear them? and more important: how long will it take before they disappear from the stores??

^Oh, life is waaaaay too short to wear jeans that you don't like.

Jeans are one of the most important facets of my life. I feel wearing ones that don't fit you in a way that makes you feel good is an affront to all that is right in the world. It makes Mother Teresa cry tears of sorrow down from heaven. It makes Buddha weep indigo. It makes kittens wish they had been born warthogs. It's just not right. There are plenty of brands and fits and lengths nowadays...just wear a cut that is comfortable and flattering and tell the sales chick to kiss your comfortably bejeans'ed ass.

i tried the mushroom cleanser and moisturizer but i couldn't convince myself that it was worth the price. i really REALLY want to believe in the power of mushrooms.... but i just don't understand the power of mushrooms.I have been using the mushroom stuff for a year or so & really just wish they would bring back my Liquid Crystal. *sniff, sniff* I see they have a new cleansing oil, though. I may try it next winter.

I have two project type thingies out at the lovely University of British Columbia at the moment, one in the morning, and one at night, spaced out enough so that I have a lot of time to kill, but close enough so it's not worth the long transit ride back home in between. In my wanderings today, I found a very cool little consignment shop and got myself a neat dress that had been marked down to only ten dollars. Very pleased with it.

decided to buy a linen suit instead. much better. and more comfy. and easier to put on

i wonder if any pair of jeans will ever fit me??

Stop when you get to the option of nail polish remover. :)

soap didn't work either.. i tried applying another regular lipstick over it and then i was able to wipe it off in a couple of tries. i don't think this is the proper way to get it off though.. even though now my lips are nicely scrubbed :p

yes we do. but i don't have it. and i didn't think about it. and yeah i should have it dammit! Why don't you have baby oil? I swear it's not like olive oil & made from squished babies!!!!

Uses for baby oil:

makeup removal, elf (eyes, lips, face) this includes the super industrial kind. (may need several cotton balls)
moisturizer (right after the shower while your skin is still wet)
in a pinch for curly hair only, put a very small amt (dime sized!) into the palm of your hand, rub palms together & run hands through hair.

First person who can tell me the link between Hugh Hefner & baby oil wins a very special prize!!!!!

i'm going to look for a nice baby oil.Otherwise what about Vaseline? You can slick it on your feet & slap on some socks before you go to sleep for soft feet in the AM's, and it can be used for a lot of other things, too. Petroleum jelly! You can use it for soft lips, and it works for makeup removal as well.

Also I don't know about you, but anytime I am wearing one of those long-wearing lipsticks, for whatever reason, I eat something with either giardiniera, or some other kind of salad dressing that dissolves most of it halfway through my day.

As a Christmas gift, it was lovely, like all things in Guerlain packaging. As a mascara, it is thoroughly ordinary. The addition of the little extra brush is nice, but with mascara like that there's only so much you can do, baby.
