Joseph Beuys, 1960s performance artist, did a piece, "How To Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare":
"On November 26, 1965, Beuys put the hare into the leading role in an Action. The title: How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare. The place: Galerie Alfred Schmela, in Düsseldorf, a gallery that had commited itself early and strongly to Beuys and had done a great deal to promote his reputation. Beuys sat on a chair in one corner of the gallery, next to the entrance. He had poured honey over his head, to which he had then affixed fifty dollars worth of gold leaf. In his arms he cradled a dead hare, which he looked at steadfastly. Then he stood up, walked around the room holding the dead hare in his arms, and held it up close to the pictures on the walls; he seemed to be talking to it. Sometimes he broke off his tour and, still holding the dead creature, stepped over a withered fir tree that lay in the middle of the gallery. All this was done with indescribable tenderness and great concentration."

I'm doing a comparative paper on labor and movement of workers across the border between the EU (a customs union which allows for free movement) and NAFTA (a free trade area which does not allow for free movement).
Haven't developed a thesis yet, really it's a summer-long paper, but my prof wants something on paper before I leave. So I have to figure out whether free movement is a good idea or not. Still researching...
nycwriters
05-23-2004, 06:32 PM
Oh the EEC is a prime model for comparison ... I've actually gotten into debates with people about how some of the failings of the EEC have potential failings indicators for NAFTA. However, if you look at reciprocity agreements between the US and Canada over the centuries, beginning with the very first one in 1812 (I'm probably wrong on the date, but it was around that time) ... and subsequent reciprocity agreements; any time there was a recession the US pulled out. This current agreement is the first one where that didn't happen.
My thesis had to do with projection of good/bad values for all countries involved. From what I can remember, it wound up being a stale deal for Canada because of duty tariffs that protected industry in Canada would become vulnerable once those tariffs were erased.
I'd be interested in reading your report about labor movements when you're done though -- considering I'm one of those statistics ... the first five years I was in the US was on a NAFTA visa. And it does allow for greater freedom of movement than policies had previously.
nycwriters
05-23-2004, 06:57 PM
Oops! forgot to say that what's bad about the NAFTA visa is that it's subject to vulnerabilities of cancellation of the agreement ... however, it has improved the "movability" of labor -- because thousands upon thousands of these visas were issued for jobs ranging from IT professionals to publishing specialists to engineers.
