http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/7113/seagullpu7.gif
Watch!He s-l-o-w-l-y enters the store......and then he runnnnnnns........OUT!
A seagull has developed the habit of stealing chips from a neighborhood shop.
The seagull waits until the shopkeeper isn't looking (so a camera was installed), and then walks into the store and grabs a snack-size bag of cheese Doritos.
Once outside, the bag gets ripped open and becomes a feast, for other birds!
The seagull's shoplifting started early this month, when he first swooped into the store , and helped himself to a bag of chips.
Since then, he's become a "regular". He always takes the same type of chips.
Customers have begun paying for the seagull's stolen bags of chips,... because they think it's so funny!

That our sysguru indeed named our new printer (sitting an armlength to my left) according to my rather joking suggestion:

(a petname like baby, darling, sugar or so)

Unfortunately it's only a temporary name atm... fear it will get a boring logical name in the end like the other printers: slj, nclj, agslj, agsclj, ...

All the computers in my home network are named after Egyptian gods and goddesses. The one with lots of LEDs in its case is called Amun-Ra because it gives off so much light; mine is called Nephthys, a goddess of the dead; my brother's is Osiris, the god of the underworld; the oldest is called Anubis because it has practically been embalmed and had its guts taken out. But to top it all off, the wireless network is called Nut after the goddess of the sky.
Actually, it is functional because it's so easy to remember what is what when they actually have reasons behind their names.

ok, so listen carefully. i'm an ER nurse, and a sweet nursing home patient was brought in today for various reasons not important to this story, and i remembered her from a previous visit because she was missing a good part of her upper lip. i recalled that she'd lost it to necrotizing fasciitis--remember the big whoop-de-do about flesh-eating bacteria a few years ago? well, the real name for that is necrotizing fasciitis.
so under her diagnoses on the printed nursing home form were her various problems-- hypertension, emphysema, diabetes, and.....fascism.
the best part of all is that the first three nurses i work with in this backwater didn't get the joke. will someone get me OUT of st. louis!

Ba-dump:
IRISH ALZHEIMER'S
Murphy showed up at Mass one Sunday and the priest almost fell down when he saw him. Murphy had never been seen in church in his adult life.
After Mass, the priest caught up with Murphy and said, Murphy, I am so glad ya decided to come to Mass, what made ya come?
Murphy said, "I got to be honest with you Father, a while back, I misplaced me hat and I really, really love that hat. I know that McGlynn had a hat just like my hat, and I knew that McGlynn came to church every Sunday. I also knew that McGlynn had to take off his hat during Mass and figured he would leave it in the back of church. So, I was going to leave after Communion and steal McGlynn's hat."
The priest said, "Well, Murphy, I notice that ya didn't steal McGlynn's hat.
What changed your mind?"
Murphy said, "Well, after I heard your sermon on the 10 Commandments, I decided that I didn't need to steal McGlynn's hat after all."
The priest gave Murphy a big smile and said; "After I talked about 'Thou Shalt Not Steal' ya decided you would rather do without your hat than burn in Hell?"
Murphy slowly shook his head and said, "Nay, Father, after ya talked about 'Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery" I remembered where I left me hat."

from the AP article: Size Matters (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hhDblZbWB-XolIHtbYOGrM0qyiAwD8S76DHG2)
"The standard for testing condom strength is to fill it with air, a technique pioneered by the Swedes in the 1950s. Condoms of the standard length and width must hold at least 4.76 gallons of air — far more than they would ever be expected to contain under normal use."

^ that reminds me of something that gave me a laugh back in college.
i used to work at a condom store near the michigan state university campus (condoms 101). one december day a man of smallish stature entered the store and gestured for me to have a quiet conversation over in the corner. with as much confidence as he could muster, he told me the following:
"i'm looking for a.... well... stocking stuffer. for someone who doesn't have much.... to stuff in his stocking."
it was the single greatest customer request i ever received. and yes, i made a recommendation that worked out smashingly for him. because when you work in a condom store, sometimes people come back to thank you.

epexegesis (n) the voluntary abstention from participation in a favoured activity, or isolation from a favoured object or person, conducted solely for the purpose of demonstrating to others one's indifference to that which one most cherishes.
Marcus Bales, stung by the suggestion that he couldn't last three days without a Dictionary Game, was driven to an act of epexegesis, he would later bitterly regret.

Anthem gaffe 'lifted Croatia'
Croatia rose to the occasion in their crucial Euro 2008 defeat of England - after an apparent X-rated gaffe by an English opera singer at Wembley.
Tony Henry belted out a version of the Croat anthem before the 80,000 crowd, but made a blunder at the end.
He should have sung 'Mila kuda si planina' (which roughly means 'You know my dear how we love your mountains').
But he instead sang 'Mila kura si planina' which can be interpreted as 'My dear, my penis is a mountain'.
Now Henry could be one of the few Englishmen at the Euro 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland as Croatian fans adopt him as a lucky omen.
They believe his mistake relaxed their chuckling players, who scored an early goal in the 3-2 win that put Croatia top of the group and knocked out England.
The singer, who hails from St Albans in Hertfordshire but now lives in Inverness, Scotland, has performed at stadiums around the world.
He was once known as the Voice of Arsenal after Gunners fans were impressed with his rendition of Abide with Me before the FA Cup final in 2003 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
Henry came unstuck when he sung Lijepa Nasa Domovino (Our Beautiful Homeland) at a rain-swept Wembley on Wednesday night.
"I can't even defend myself at the end of the day. It was apparently the last line on the second verse which I made the mistake on," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.
"Coming to Wembley and the stadium, it must have got to me, is all I can say.
"It was the last thing that I would intentionally do, and all I can say is if I have offended any Croatians, then they have my deepest apologies."
On the contrary, Henry is becoming a cult hero in Croatia, but denies he played a part in England's exit.
"I can't take the blame for that. The last thing I would do is brag about my parts like that - especially to make it so public," said Henry.
BBC TV presenter Adrian Chiles, whose mother is Croatian, acknowledged the language could pose problems.
"As a speaker of poor Croatian, I have a proud record of getting things calamitously wrong," said the Match of the Day 2 host.
"My personal best was telling a campsite owner that I had a small rat (mali stakor) rather than small tent (mali shator). However, Tony's put all my lifetime's efforts into the shade now."
Zeljka Tomljenovic, secretary of the British-Croatian Society, added: "I don't envy the guy at all because the pronunciation is so difficult.
"He had a big challenge, to sing the national anthem in a language he knows, I assume, nothing about."
Henry's agent Douglas Gillespie said it was a genuine mistake, but admitted the publicity could boost his career.
"He's been given the lyrics correctly, but he has enough trouble with English, never mind Croatian," joked Gillespie.
"There were 80,000 people in the crowd and millions of people watching. It was just the pressure of the moment.
"He did sing it very well and made a very, very small mistake for someone doing his best and singing in a language that is alien to him. If you've ever tried to speak Croatian, it's very difficult.
"The Croatians think it's great, and they've invited him to come over and sing at Euro 2008, and asked if he will be their mascot."

A young woman had been taking golf lessons.
She had just started playing her first round of golf when she suffered a bee sting.
Her pain was so intense that she decided to return to the clubhouse for help and to complain. Her golf pro saw her come into the clubhouse and asked,"Why are you back in so early? What's wrong?" "I was stung by a bee", she said.
"Where", he asked.
"Between the first and second hole", she replied.
He nodded knowingly and said,
"Then your stance is too wide."

Hear the jingle bells!
Hear them jingle!
How they jingle!
How they jangle!
And see the madman in the red suit!
Who is coming!
He sees you!
With wide wild eyes.
He wants you!
He sees you when you sleep!
He knows what mad dances
The reindeer make!
How they twirl and touch their antlers!
How their blood is stirred
By the madman they call Claus!
How merry they are
As they drink your blood and say,
"Merry Christmas to all,
And to all a good night!"
You are their daughter!

an email from a security officer of the office building that i used to work in who tried to use some fancy official words. i'm still in their mailing list apparently.
translated from dutch:
Dear inhabitants,
Our organization has been provided by the police in Amsterdam with the following:
The police have found, that there has been increasing activity of intimidation and/or sexual activity around our office building, mostly in the bushes at the end of the A9 tunnel to Ikea.
We understand, that said tunnel is quite often being used to go to Ikea. We strongly advise you to avoid said bushes and, if necessary, take proper precautions.
If you feel threatened or think the situation is unsafe, our security department can walk you to your car.
Kind regards,
Security
i don't know exactly why this makes me laugh.. might be the silliness of whatever's going on in those goddamn bushes.. or the silliness of the way the email is written.. or what those precautions would be.. armed and dangerous on the way to ikea-- beware, robbers and rapists in the bushes! :D

i'll probably hear the damn thing taking off right over my head tomorrow morning-- it's scheduled to leave at 07:00h. it produced 92 decibels on the way here so i guess i don't have to set the alarm clock

18c is the rw called "zwanenburgbaan" north to south. this aircraft didn't fly over here, but it will probably leave from 18c again.
i now see that they changed the stats to 85 decibel!
but yeah, i've learned how loud these things are--
55-60: able to hear it inside the house with window/balcony door closed
60-70: rumble interfering with regular conversation
70-80: louder than the tv
over 80: windows & cups in the cupboard rattle
over 85: cat hides under bed

Flies over our house on a regular basis going into Moffett Field. He's only got the 4 engines and we're about 8 miles away from the runway but it's still awfully loud, and it usually comes in at 2:30am. Plus we're at a part of the pattern where they have to rev the engines a little to stay on glide path.

I was in WalMart and had an epiphany about it.
It is an actual recorded prank on a telemarketer by comedian Tom Mabe. In it he plays a redneck sheriff type who is hilariously uncouth to this unsuspecting telemarketer. Toward the end it might be making fun of gay men. But I didn't see it that way at first. I thought he was just parodying an uncouth redneck and making that character stand out. In retrospect it sounds unkind and we don't need anything that encourages unkindness toward people. I still do reserve the right to say uncouth redneck though. Hummm.

BLUE GNOME GROUP
Fixing the Gender Balance at the Smurf Commune
By R. Jay Magill, Jr. in Berlin
The colony of blue Smurfs is supposed to be the perfect realization of communism gone right, with the white-bearded, red pants-wearing Papa Smurf symbolizing Karl Marx. So where are all the girls?
http://www.kahler-laxenburg.at/pics/schlumpf_papa.jpg
(Papa Smurf)
Tra-la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la. Carefree living, music and 'shrooms. For many, the Smurfs are the perfect realization of Marx and Engel's utopia.
Money means nothing in the 100-strong Smurf society, where property belongs to everyone and there is no currency. Community work is done together. Labor divisions are clear: Handy Smurf (tradesman), Farmer Smurf (agricultural planning), Brainy Smurf (intelligentsia), Harmony Smurf (the arts), and so on.
Everyone is equal, even in age: a spry 100 (except Papa, the supposed embodiment of Karl Marx; he's 542). Only the evil sorcerer Gargamel and his tricky cat, Azrael -- taken to be agents of global capitalism -- can disturb the society's socialist bliss.
There's only one problem with this Marxist utopia -- where are all the women? Until now, the mossy retreat has had only one prominent female resident: Smurfette, with her flowing blonde hair, high-heels, and feminine wiles. (Though no one remembers them, there were actually three female Smurfs, according to the Web encylopedia Wikipedia.)
http://www.smurf.com/images/meet_us/smurfette.jpg
(Smurfette)
But now that is all going to change. A new Smurf movie, the first of a trilogy, will introduce a foreign population to the knee-high neighborhood: females.
"There have been dramatic changes in socio-cultural values in the past 20 to 25 years," Hendrik Coysman, head of International Merchandising, Promotion & Services, the company that owns the rights to the Smurfs, said Monday at a news conference in Brussels. "One of these is girl empowerment." Coysman continued: "There will be a greater female presence in the Smurf village, and this will, of course, be a basis for new stories. This will probably turn upside down certain traditional situations within the village."
Malgorzata Tarasiewicz, a specialist on EU policy and gender and the director of the Amsterdam-based European Feminist Forum, thinks that the Smurfs can lead by little blue example. "Even in the world of Smurfs it is accepted what many politicians and other decision makers still do not want to realize: that women need to be equal and equally represented," she told SPIEGEL ONLINE Friday. "It becomes a fact difficult to ignore, that women are more visible in the public sphere, in media and in business -- such that even fairy tales must reflect this important civilizational development."
International Merchandising is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Smurfs in 2008 with a "Happy Smurfday" which runs the entire year. Press conferences in Berlin, Brussels and Paris, an exposition, a giant Smurf zeppelin, a Web site, and a partnership with Unicef -- which will share the profits -- are all part of the celebration.
Details of the upcoming feature film and other surprises are being kept under smurfing tight wraps at International Merchandising. But it is known that the Smurfs' return to the screen, in a computer-animated 3D film set for release in November 2008, is being developed by Paramount Pictures' Nickelodeon Films unit and produced by Jordan Kerner ("Charlotte's Web," "Inspector Gadget").
And with the Smurfs movie rumored to employ the filmic voices of some of Hollywood's most accomplished women, including Sally Field, Lucy Liu, Julia Sweeney, Jessica Simpson and Marisa Tomei, things are about to get a whole lot more modern in the mushroom hut.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamington
A 1981 report in the Brisbane Courier Mail states the following: A colleague ... swears this is really how the lamington came about. At one stage when Baron Lamington was Queensland Governor, there was a large amount of stale cake in the Government House kitchen. In an attempt to make it palatable, the cake was dipped in chocolate and then tossed in desiccated coconut. The parliamentarians liked this 'gateau' and ordered their cooks to obtain the recipe from the Government House cook.
Ironically, Lord Lamington was known to have hated the dessert that had been named in his honour, once referring to them as "those bloody poofy woolly biscuits".[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamington#_note-ozwords)

Yeah yeah, it's juvenile but still made me laugh. And yes, I had to look up "blunken" via Urban Dictionary to find out what was going on.

just on the news here: the christian parties in our government are protesting against a porn movie on one of the public tv channels that's going to be broadcasted in combination with a documentary about the history of porn--
and the next item on the news: in the USA showing a butt on tv leads to major fines!

My wacky housemate, in answer to this email:
Hi there -
We just wanted to officially request that everyone keep the bathroom door closed until further notice.
As you may know, Arthur has been pooping in the bathtub almost every day. We don't know why, but we do know that when he can't get in he chooses the litter box over anywhere else (thank goodness) so we'd like to keep the door closed until he forgets that the tub is there or something. Whatever his kitty logic is telling him, anyway.
This means - when you leave the bathroom - *please* remember to close the door behind you. We are the ones who have to clean it up, and we'd rather not have to keep doing that.
Thanks very much!
replied:
Listen, I don't mind closing the door, but I think you should read this....
From the Berkeley Animal Rights commission...
We think it is barbaric that you would deny an animal the right to defecate where it feels most comfortable. Humans are not the indigenous species afterall. How would you like it if you were a school age child who was terrorized by a bully when you went to the main bathroom but weren't allowed to use another bathroom of your choice? You would probably defecate in your pants out of fear! You would vomit on the way home out of terror! You would urinate all over yourself in class causing even more embarrasment out of panic! You would be going through exactly what you are putting your cat through! As a legal entity, the Berkeley Animal Rights Commission has the right to shut down any human home that is found guilty of not preserving animal rights. You are hereby ordered to leave your home at once. Your punishment is to live like homeless people so that you may know how others suffer because of your selfishness!
We are sick and tired of being labeled "Berkeley freaks" by the establishment who only want to persecute us by confusing the public with these insults about us! We will not tolerate animal abuse! And you are animal abusers!
Furthermore, fecal matter in the shower has an added benefit that humans should take advantage of. The squishy feeling that feces makes as you pasta-press it between your toes is comparable to that much more expensive mud you would use in a spa. Cat feces have an aroma and texture that rivals mud recovered from the bath houses of Pompei that costs thousands of dollars per session!
You should be ashamed of yourself for the trauma you are causing your cat and for the selfishness of your indulgence of an imported item when you could be enjoying that which is locally grown and made!!
As citizens of Berkeley, we are ashamed to have you in our species!
Signed,
Berkeley Animal Rights Commission
