Thank you, but having read your post, I think you did an equal or better job of addressing the issues at hand.

I still think so but I still feel the need to post this.

I'm glad you did because it was a fine comment and added to our understanding of the board as it works. :)

ciao. All I had time to look at was titles. There's a lot of threads in this place. Titles don't look too much different from now to me.
Maybe after I retire in 20 years or so I'll have time to go over every message in detail and figure out how much better things were in the good old days.
Write when you have time.

that is not true. especially in my case. i havent been around a lot, i've been very busy to the point of breakdown, and i hardly use the darkroom. we dont all hide in there and laugh at all the people who dont have enough posts.

Well, she was there at the inception, and probably helped formulate the concept. That's why he included her in. Its just a time and post # thing. O cripes, you didnt delete all your posts and not get included because of that, too, did you?

I've cut n' pasted this post of mine from the "deconstructing message boards" thread. After catching up on this thread, it applies here as well...

i think it was the complaints of some of the other folks who joined for the fiction that spurred 'ze to create the darkroom... a place where we could write in peace, without the spammers. it was a place for the old timers. we set the criteria to be a filter to allow only the oldtimers in... since only the oldtimers could have reached 4000 posts. 'ze even said "of course for someone to post more than 4,000 posts in less than a year requires an average daily post total ~ 15 - which is pretty hardcore."

but there were some hardcore spammers. go figure, the law of unintended consequences is a bitch.
Exactly. It really isn't and never was a "gift" or "surprise" for the rest of the members. Thoughtful attempt to smooth it over, but pretty crappy to use that against NYC for outting it. It's pretty obvious that the criteria that you all set included the core group of "old timers" (the board's first 18mos of members that still continuously post). NYC didn't spoil that "gift", she revealed the "old timers" private forum. It's common knowledge to any one who's been here awhile that a number of the "old timers" have been unhappy with where the boards have gone; I'm sure the Malarkey debacle just drove that point home. I can understand parts of this... but then, I'm not one of the "old timers" having only been here a year.

Certainly couldn't just create an "old timers only" room without leaving some guidelines for everyone else to make their way into at some point. That just wouldn't look right if anyone discovered it. That's how it appears anyhow. So the whole "gift/surprise" thing really has a bad after taste for me because I don't think that's what the creation of that room was about in the first place. Since this is all out in the open now, who were the very first allowed members of the darkroom? What criteria did they meet?

can you understand that the folks who are here for the writing might find it hard to see their playground get over-run?
Absolutely. Why not start your own fiction/writing forum only? One that you all can control the content, members, etc. of? Ze's boards attracted different types of creative people over the years, not just those who write. He's allowed and accomodated all types of creativity. Would be a whole lot easier for you to create the more focused, streamlined writing environment you desire than he at this point don't you think?

zefrank
10-30-2004, 08:02 PM
darkroom was my idea. she was in my presence while i was first talking about it, while i was in seattle - so i made an exception.

the first iteration of the darkroom allowed anyone over 3,000 posts to view it. it was then raised to 4,000 the next day. no other criteria exists, or will exist.
