Ah, those flowers really cheered me up!!! Thank you !!! We got back to the house early this afternoon after spending Thursday thru today at our shore house with visiting relatives (my husband's, so that added to the complete soap opera mind set.) We are now vacuuming out the basement - a lot of mud but it was worse a year ago when we had even more water in the basement. This time we only had 5 feet. The Red Cross is bringing fried chicken around for everyone for our dinner. Teams of Red Cross volunteers are descending on the neighborhood checking out our mental health. My husband warned me that the next person to ask if he's alright is going to get pushed over into mud puddle. I think he's losing it. Back to the basement!!! :(

Trish - It looks like a fungus - was there a tree planted there at one time? Old, rotting roots attract fungi because of the high organic material under the soil surface. There's a fungi called Agarius spp., Marasmius oreades also known as Fairy Rings. It's hard to control but possible by aerating the area and drenching it with a fungicide.

Try looking into insect-parasitic nematodes. These are worms which infect insects but are harmless to humans, plants, animals, and beneficial insects. Here's where you can get them:

So are you really talking about a balcony and need a plant screen? Sun/shade? What botanical zone do you live in? Maybe a wood trellis with some silk (fake) vines you can store during the months you don't sit out there. No watering - just dusting.

bugs are in the different species of chrysants and leucanthemum species and in the gerberas.

i have more plants but they don't eat those..

i get all my plants at the garden center or at a grower's greenhouse. i keep them outside over the winter, the leaves die off but they come up every year during spring. sometimes i cover the pots with newspapers to protect them from the cold.

edited to add: plants with bugs aren't allowed inside the house anyway ;)

ahhhhhh i remember that image fondly. a couple years ago i trolled a wedding website and tried to foist that gown off as my own. it had a backstory and everything.

she was a young canadian girl, betrothed to an american man whose neo-conservative family felt justified in eyeballing all foreigners suspiciously in this, our post-9/11 world. to make amends, the canadian bride intended to throw a pro-USA themed wedding complete with american flag gown, 4th of july party favors, and a tiered wedding cake iced in red white and blue decorations.

i got a good hysterical run out of that character. those were the days.
