Book Description

GIRAFFES?
GIRAFFES!
For many years the scientific and educational community has wondered and worried about the possibility that semi-sane scholar-pretenders would find the means to put out a series of reference books, filled with ludicrous misinformation and aimed at children.
So here we are with GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES! by Dr. and Mr. Doris Haggis-On-Whey. A world-renowned and much feared expert on everything, Dr. Doris Haggis-On-Whey has seventeen degrees from eighteen institutions of higher learning. With her husband, Benny, she has traveled the world many times over, has learned about all aspects of life, including outer space and food, first hand.
When is the last time you actually sat down and had a conversation with a giraffe? That's what I thought. You are hopelessly clueless on giraffe culture, their likes/dislikes and voting patterns -- most giraffes are probably libertarian. GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES! is the authoritative text on the biology, history and overall nature of giraffes.
You are so behind on giraffes that it's rather embarrassing and you obviously need this book more than health insurance. Things you probably don't know about giraffes -- and can only be found in this book -- include giraffes' preferred mode of transportation (conveyor belt), what their bodies are made of (paper mache, a clock, fruit juices and a super-strong lightweight titanium alloy), where most giraffes live (Terra Haute, Indiana -- known for many things, including buildings made of wood and ground made of dirt), and basic giraffe history (in 50,000 B.C giraffes began to hang out with primitive man, they found him to be likeable and helped him paint buffaloes in caves).
Cheat Sheet on Giraffes (good for slumber parties and barroom brawls):
• Giraffes invented plastic. "No, not plastic--latex. My bad. Still, though isn't that amazing?"
• Frequently Asked Question: Why do we call giraffes "giraffes?" Answer: Because when they came to Earth they asked us to.
• Rarely Asked Question: How fast can giraffes run? The giraffes have tried to phase out running from their lives but if they had to, they could still run much faster than you. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that they can run 780 mph.
With the wit and irreverent sense of humor for which Dave Eggers and McSweeney's is known, comes the first volume in the revolutionary Haggis-On-Whey World of Unbelievable Brilliance books. More than just entertaining and informative, GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES! will help you appear smarter, more in touch with your sensitive side and whiten your teeth. And much, much more that will likely sicken you.

;) :)

And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right? ...am I wrong?
And you may tell yourself

Here's that thing I said I would post for ya:

MENDING WALL
Robert Frost

Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun,
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
Where they have left not one stone on a stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,
No one has seen them made or heard them made,
But at spring mending-time we find them there.
I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each.
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls
We have to use a spell to make them balance:
'Stay where you are until our backs are turned!'
We wear our fingers rough with handling them.
Oh, just another kind of out-door game,
One on a side. It comes to little more:
There where it is we do not need the wall:
He is all pine and I am apple orchard.
My apple trees will never get across
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, 'Good fences make good neighbors'.
Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder
If I could put a notion in his head:
'Why do they make good neighbors? Isn't it
Where there are cows?
But here there are no cows.
Before I built a wall I'd ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offence.
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That wants it down.' I could say 'Elves' to him,
But it's not elves exactly, and I'd rather
He said it for himself. I see him there
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me~
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.
He will not go behind his father's saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, "Good fences make good neighbors."

And here's one more thing:
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q_Fer1CR0IE"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Q_Fer1CR0IE" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

^ that video is great !

i love that you ended the video with an image of the duck right before it burns...there is something a little phoenix-like in there...actually i see a lot of symbols going on, that fit quite well with the sound track

i also really like how the fact that when you focus on the fire, the rest of the picture seems like it's nighttime, and when the fire dies down you start seeing the dusk sky again...

sorry if i'm reading into symbolic stuff that you may or may not have intended - i'm not expecting any feedback on your part..

just want to say that i'm impressed :)

Clean Port-O-Pottie
Dirty Santa
Fake Fur Chaps
Tofu Pups Wrapper
Foodlab

But the only one I'm really sure about is the Clean Port-O-Pottie. I've heard those things are just mirages while you're on the playa. :D

lukkucairi
09-06-2007, 09:00 PM
surprisingly, you're mistaken!

the porta potties were often foul, but they got pumped as many as four times a day toward the end of the week - so if by "clean" you mean "relatively empty and recently hosed down" then indeed, I often encountered a clean porta pottie.

especially since we camped within sight of them, so I always knew just when they were being serviced :D

there were fake fur chaps galore, but no huge prosthetic penises. go figure!

I worked through a lot of stuff - it was good - it was intense - it was inspiring - it was physically exhausting - I'm going back again next year - already got my next sculpture planned out - we'll see how that goes...

Father-in-law passed away last night - so I'll be on and off the board but more off than on - have to figure out funeral arrangements and then we will be flying out, whenever that happens.

We're OK - it's alright - death sucks, is all.

Craig, do you know how much you'd earn and how many hours you'd had to work per month in this hypothetical new job?

If so, do the following maths:

q(current job) = salary(current job) % #workhours(current job)

and do the same for hyp.new job --> q(hyp. new job)

Then calculate

Q = q(hyp. new job) % q(current job)

(What?! It doesn't harm to do some Maths on Monday to get the grey mass moving! ;))

If this Q is smaller than 1.1 procrastinate that thing straight into Infinity, ain't worth the stress
If this Q is larger than 1.1 but you'd had to move away from scruffy, old, unfriendly, but very loveable Berlin or the tasks you'd have to do in this new job and/or the working environment feel uncomfy to you then proceed like in 1. Money ain't everthing now!
If your current work contract should run out in less than 6 months w/o any chance for prolongation forget about the Q cos it might be better to get your ass moving either for this hypothetical new job or another one...

In any case get that certs back asap - firms (or worse even state institutions) love to 'lose' stuff like that...

:)

only page 52!

I do not set mysellf up as a moral exemplar, and would be swiftly knocked down if I did, but if I was suspected of raping a child, or torturing a child, or infecting a child with venereal disease, or selling a child into sexual or any other kind of slavery, I might consider committing suicide whether I was guilty or not. If I had actually committed the offense, I would welcome death in any form that it might take. This revulsion is innate in any healthy person, and does not need to be taught. Since religion has proved itself to be uniquely delinquent on the one subject where moral and ethical authority might be counted as universal and absolute, I think we are entitled to at least three provisional conclusions. The first is that religion and the churches are manufactured, and that this salient fact is too obvious to ignore. The second is that ethics and morality are quite independent of faith, and cannot be derived from it. The third is that religion is -- because it claims a special divine exemption for its practices and beliefs -- not just amoral but immoral. The ignorant psychopath or brute who mistreats his children must be punished but can be understood. Those who claim a heavenly warrant for the cruelty have been tainted by evil, and also constitute far more of a danger.

Yes, it is enough now, indeed.

What I wanted to do - no matter what - is finished. What I could do/try - to go back to normal again (żnormal? real nice it been in any case) - is done.

The rest is up to you.

Go on using your second talent, yeah?!

Hop into the void.

No secret here actually:
Both issues/concerns are contained in the material itself.
The rest: stubborn trials to find out whether one got through and to get a clue about the other.

Yeah right  it's like telling a secret on the radio.
Well, for starters it wasn't in this week's lot.
Secondly it cost me $2.20 to post, or maybe it was $1.10.

And in general it was about not being myself for fear of what other people might think. I said in the childhood anecdotes thread that I don't care what other people think of me, and normally I pride myself on this point, but in this instance I did care when I shouldn't have and it made me feel ashamed.

don't be too hard on yourself. But IMO you are right to pride yourself on not caring about what others think.

which is quite paradoxical, when you think of it...what use is pride if you don't care what others think ?

carp, i think i tied my brain into a knot again

Fear had never been a practical solution and she was a very practical person. But practicality always arrives with its arrogant step child pride, and pride refuses to beg for recognition, it never demands, but quietly expects something and a little more than anything.

neither, guys.. i brought the posh one but there was no room to change except a tiny toilet-- and then i thought, fwk it.. so i wore the dress i wore to the wedding itself!.. :) it was an unconventional wedding anyway.. dinner was at a chinese restaurant that we had to walk to, there was no band but they had a big wurlitzer jukebox in there, things like that. it was cool :)

the wedding itself was wonderful, in an old building from 1600-something that's now a museum. lots of huge Nachtwacht-style paintings on the walls, tapestries, dark wood.. absolutely gorgeous.
