Word of the week: Geezer

British English has a large number of informal words for man. Some of the more common examples are bloke, guy and geezer. The latter can be heard in expressions like ‘Dave’s a bit of a geezer’, a use which the Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners defines as 'a man who you think is involved with illegal or immoral activities'.

Geezer is commonly used to refer to any man whose name you don’t know, as in ‘I was chatting to a couple of geezers in the pub last night’. If someone is a geezer, they may also be overtly masculine and possibly a down-to-earth, plain-speaking type. The word is not synonymous with macho, however, and is roughly the equivalent of the American word dude. An England international footballer once referred to Prince William as ‘a nice, relaxed geezer’. In North America, however, geezer usually refers to elderly men, as in ‘I was walking down the street when this old geezer walked straight into me’.

The origin of geezer is an interesting one. It appears to derive from the now obsolete term guiser, meaning someone who walks around in disguise, a performer in a masquerade. So a word that was used in the Middle Ages to refer to mummers (actors in traditional plays without words) has now simply come to mean bloke.

^ The Streets' album is what taught me that 'geezer' didn't mean 'old man' in UK english.

What if you see me in that window?
You won't help me I know.
That's cool, just keep walking where you go.
Carry on through the estate, stare at the geezers so they know you aint lightweight
And go see your mates
And when they don't look happy
Play them this tape

also

It's now 7:50, getting ready, better be nifty
Do my hair quickly, step out it's cloudy
Mate bells me to borrow money, I got two Henry's and a dealer to pay
Call up on geezers to rip these green trees in my reeking jeans
Got a you think I care air outglaring geezers stares
I'm here and I'm there
Couldn't see past the end of my beer
What was getting near, all the silence after the cheers

and of course

Geezerz need excitement
If their lives don't provide them this they incite violence
Common sense simple common sense

brightpearl
10-17-2007, 02:59 PM
^I had no idea geezers could be so fraught with danger. Or so lacking in common sense.

Best of all:

'Geezers on e's and first timers
kids on whizz, darlins on Charlie
All come together for this party
All races, many faces from places you never heard of
Where you from? What's your name? and what you want?
Sing to the words, flex to the fat one
The tribal drums. the sun's risin. we all smile, we all sing...'

Now that's poetry

one of my friends like to poke fun at me with this one

Hello, hello. My name's Terry and I'm a law abider
There's nothing I like more than getting fired up on beer
And when the weekend's here
I too exercise my right to get paralytic and fight good bloke fairly
But I get well leery when geezers look at me funny
Bounce 'em round like bunnies
I'm likely to cause mischief
Good clean grief you must believe and I ain't no thief
Law abiding and all, all legal
And who cares about my liver when it feels good
What you need is some real manhood
Rasher Rasher Barney and Kasha putting people's backs up
Public disorder, I'll give you public disorder
I down eight pints and run all over the place
Spit in the face of an officer
See if that bothers you 'cos I never broke a law in my life
Someday I'm gonna settle down with a wife
Come on lads let's have another fight

1 qt. apple juice
1 qt. OJ
1 qt. pineapple juice
3-4 cinnamon sticks, 8 whole allspice, and 4 cloves tied in cheesecloth
1 sliced apple, one slice orange
heat the lot for an hour or two, but don't simmer, and add brandy if you like.

Online auction for "Knight Rider" car temporarily suspended

Posted Dec. 21, 2007
10:03 PM

Greenwich (AP) _ A Greenwich attorney says he's halted an eBay auction of an original KITT from the '80s TV series "Knight Rider" because he's had more inquiries than he can handle.

The black 1984 Pontiac Trans Am is being sold to satisfy the debts of slain Greenwich real estate developer Andrew Kissel. Boats, cars and other items owned by Kissel already have been sold after creditors claimed he owed $30 million.

The attorney for Kissel's estate says press reports prompted so much interest in the car that he had more bids than he can handle from Hawaii, where he is on vacation. Gil says he plans to list the car again when he returns next month.

The highest bid when the auction ended was $40,100.

Kissel apparently bought his KITT from an auction house for $69,000 in 2005, but never picked it up.

Important Mr. Blobby news for auntie:

I found this description accompanying your avatar here (http://lumq.com/10/weirdest-animals-and-creatures-in-the-world/):

"The blobfish (Fathead, Psychrolutes marcidus) is a fish that inhabits the deep waters off the coasts of Australia and Tasmania. Due to the inaccessibility of its habitat, it is rarely seen by humans.

Blobfish are found at depths where the pressure is several dozens of times higher than at sea level, which would likely make gas bladders inefficient. To remain buoyant, the flesh of the blobfish is primarily a gelatinous mass with a density slightly less than water; this allows the fish to float above the sea floor without expending energy on swimming. The relative lack of muscle is not a disadvantage as it primarily swallows edible matter that floats by in front of it.

Blobfish don’t need muscles – they have a feeding strategy that consists of sitting and waiting for something edible to go by. As well as that, their jelly-like flesh is slightly lighter than water, so they don’t need to expend energy or scarce oxygen to stop themselves from sinking towards the sea floor. This low-density flesh is an alternative to a gas-filled swim bladder, a feature of many fish in less deep waters. However, at 800 metres deep the pressure is about 80 times higher than at sea level, so any gas would be too compressed to serve the purpose."

Who knows if this is accurate, but I did google the species name and found this, which looks pretty similar:

isn't he fascinating? blobby shared his bio with me when we first met.

The relative lack of muscle is not a disadvantage as it primarily swallows edible matter that floats by in front of it.
see, this is why he and i get along so well. we have so much in common!

I concur - auntie's Blobby is somewhat of a Leo di Carpaccio in the blobfish community.

In my opinion he owes it to that greasy quality of skin - the female blobbies love a male who isn't afraid to wear his fat on the outside.

In Australia they eat blobbies by skewering them nose to tail and grilling them on the barbie. The exterior fat makes great cracklins! Yum.

Actually we babysat her overweight kid in Ibiza - all he was interested in was tv, probably just because it pissed his mum off.

Today I got a really bad haircut from a tatooed punk girl. I am now sitting in a leather armchair, drunk from too much budweiser, after having met a Tibetan activist who strangely enough also saw James gandolfini at the pizza parlor off 7th and ave A this afternoon.

He gave me a look that said: don't even notice i'm here. So i didn't.

i don't know what to make of that. seems interesting, though, to see which original members are on this project, as compared with rifftrax (http://www.rifftrax.com/).

if you haven't tried rifftrax yet, i highly recommend it. we've done the pilot episode of lost and the bourne identity. i laughed myself sick, although the format does begin to wear after the first half. which, frankly, was true even of the original MST3K formula.

I was in a classroom on the second floor and sat down across from a window looking out on a big old elm whose branches (nude and dark at this time of year) formed a great big quite perfect capital letter A about fifteen feet off the ground. I wished zero could have seen it because it most assuredly would have given him a happy.

Jack Flanders
01-16-2008, 03:35 AM
^^^ may I say, please - that gave me a happy? I grew up with elms as a kiddo until the Dutch Elm Disease took them all. I loved those trees.

Where I live is Dutch Elm disease-free, and I hope it stays that way -- they make fantastic canopies overtop the streets that they line in the spring and summer.

hey everyone

i feel bad for not posting lately around here. i'm still looking for a place to live in NYC, it's really hard doing the craiglist thing after work every day.

I didn't rest enough before moving to the states, which may have been a bit stupid. I feel burnt out and i'm just starting...I have met some cool people here, luckily, and it keeps me going.

The work environment is way more formal than what i am used to, and i am going to need to wrap my head around it. It's hard to be the new guy all over again, too.

meh :o

i'm a bit sick so it's making me see the negative, i guess.

i'll be around more often when i find a place to live of my own, with an internet connection.
