^Oi, the dove.... :(
It was like that: Two eggs were laid, mommy & daddy dove in turn sat on them, but one of them was very scared (we guess daddy dove, of course from an evolutionary pov his own life is more important than that of the kiddies - there's enough girl doves around here...). Although we sneaked very cautiously around he always flew off like the devil would be after him - even when we only moved too fast within our office with or without door closed. So, somewhen overlast weekend (I wasn't even outside to smoke although in office) he managed to throw down and smash one of the eggs during such a flight (there is also a cat fed by the campus caretaker who always sneaks round the fire escape stairs close to our balustrade, maybe he fled of her sneaking round?) and after that both doves abandoned the nest. As the nest was too light then, the wind blew it down one night (last Wednesday night I think), smashing the remaining egg (well the baby bird was surely dead already)........ :(

i can't remember which thread it was in, but you talked about how your foot injury left you feeling like your foot was disconnected from your body. you said sometimes it just got in the way, like it wasn't working in harmony with the rest of your body. i had a hard time truly understanding that at the time but i think i get it now. my stitches are out and my finger is technically "healed" but it's not the same as it was before. i can't bring myself to touch anything, as though i'm perpetually nine fingered. i'm no longer effective left-handed and i never developed my coordination enough to be right-handed. i'm neither-handed now. i'm klutzy with it, and it no longer obeys unconscious commands the way the other fingers do. more often than not it's just in the way, as though it doesn't belong to me anymore.
it's a minute version of what i'm sure you experience, but i thought of what you wrote yesterday when my doctor suggested physical therapy and i thought maybe i had a glimpse of what you feel.
Frieda
05-09-2008, 06:19 AM
sounds like it auntie, such a weird feeling, isn't it?? you're going to teach your finger all those commands again in physical therapy. and teach your brain how to steer! they'll also help you get used to all the different sensations. like water running over it, or the touch of a feather, or what it feels like to pick up sand or gravel.
also, be prepared to receive the term "neglect", that's what doctors and physical therapists call this phenomenon. i think it's a denigrating word because it suggests you're doing it on purpose, and you're not, of course. it's just what happens when a limb hasn't functioned in a while. it gets disconnected.
Oliver Sacks describes his own experiences with it in his book "a leg to stand on" after he got his leg injured. reading his book helped me very much, because it helped me understand how i felt and what it did to me.
i hope you'll heal soon, auntie, even though the stitches are gone there's still a lot of healing to do! :)

that's exactly what i'm in for. my first physical therapy is the 19th and the doctor told me to be prepared to run my hand through bowls of rice and marbles.
the worst was when i was trying to explain to him how i'm reluctant to touch anything and he picked up my hand and rubbed his thumb right across the face of the injury site. i nearly leaped out of my chair and i could feel a strange lingering.... i can't explain it.... shadow of the sensation for at least 10 or 15 minutes afterwards.

Avi wants to sing this to you:
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, each one she passes goes, "Aahhh.."
When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gently
That when she passes, each one she passes goes, "Aahhh.."
Oh, but I watch her so sadly
How can I tell her I love her?
Yes I would give my heart gladly
But each day when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at me
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, I smile, but she doesn't see
She just doesn't see,
No, she just doesn't see.

When Ysobel said something was "traditionally worn under the kiltl" Dinzdale's instant shagreen was "Nothing is worn under the kilt, lassie, it's all in perfect working order."
 Now, that'd certainly be a dissapointment: to find nothing under the kilt.

Ach. Now I get it. :(
Marcus Bales
06-01-2008, 01:29 PM
The "Ach" is good!
Ysobel is being shown around a Scottish hospital. At the end of her visit, she is shown into a ward with a number of patients who show no obvious signs of injury. The man in the first bed proclaims:
"Fair fa' yer sonsie face,
Great chieftain e' the puddin' race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch tripe or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy o' a grace
As lang's my arm."
Ysobel, somewhat taken aback, goes to the next patient, who immediately launches into:
"Some hae meat, and canna eat, and some wad eat that want it,
But we hae meat and we can eat,
And sae the Lord be thankit."
And suddenly the next patient sits up and declaims.
"Wee sleekit cow'rin tim'rous beastie,
O what a panic's in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty,
wi' bickering brattle
I wad be laith to run and chase thee,
wi' murdering prattle!"
"Well," Ysobel said to her Scottish companion, "I see you saved the psychiatric ward for the last."
"Nay, nay," the Scottish doctor corrected her, "This is the Serious Burns Unit."

Things to Do with Flies
There's just two: zipping them down before and zipping them up after, aren't there?
Yes, in Uncle Emmett’s abridged version of The Lord of the Flies.
Here’s some of the more creative ideas:
http://www.funnypictures.net.au/images/fly-powered-plane-instructions-model-airplane.jpg
breed them for commercial purposes:
http://www.thinksimian.com/images/flies/flies_2.JPG
collect them:
http://www.graysofkilsyth.com/Boxed-Salmon-Flies-5.jpg
imitate them:
http://www.andypryke.com/twiki/pub/Andypublic/BlogJune2005/flies.jpg
design fashion articles with them:
http://www.bugbog.com/images/galleries/australia_pictures/red_centre_pictures_flies.jpg
use them in the inappropriate dinner conversations thread to ask for the recipe of Fly shake:
http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/images/flies_be_gone.jpg
store them in a jar for hard times:
http://getsomenoise.com/albumimages/52_Alice%20In%20Chains_Jar%20of%20Flies.jpg
embroider them on a T-shirt:
http://www.c71123.com/img/20070314-garbage_flies-570.jpg
and, of course, kill them:

to all of you sherlock holmesies (and there's quite a lot of you) that send me pm messages about spam:
thank you for your messages.
there's no need to pm me that you've found a spam message. i am able to find them on my own too! please allow 24 hours for me to delete the spam before you send me a pm about it.
i ask you this, because sometimes there will be days on which i do not logon to my computer. sometimes i will simply not be around because i am asleep, or at work, or doing grocery shopping.
for me, finding 6 pm messages that there is spam is quite annoying. in fact, that's what i call spam! so please, relax, it's not the end of the world. in case of extreme urges to make known there is spam on this board please start a thread in Fast Chat. ok? :)

doundake - a judgment re-assigned to another judge due to dilatory behavior by the first judge.
Sometimes the game can't go on without a doundake; any volunteers?

@Auntie:
I have a name for your list (it's the name of my baby brother and I always liked it alot... well if had been a boy -- and my mother was so convinced of this that she didn't even let the doc check it ;) -- it would have been mine):
Florian
short pet form: Flo
Dunno how it sounds when pronounced in English,
Like 'flow' + 'ryan'?
In German, the first two syllables are similar in pronounciation of vowels, accentuation and melody than those in 'Lolita'.
Oh and in the Cath voodoo belief Saint Florian is the protection spirit against fire (old houses in the South sometimes have a picture of him painted on the outer wall as protection). He's also the patron of breweries, chimney sweeps and soap makers ;) And the chief saint of Austria and Poland!

My apologies - I've had no quality spam to forward lately, and chatting about familiar, everyday things seems so mundane for someone I've placed so high on a pedestal I have to squint against the noon sun. But maybe I should send you the grateful reply I sent to Mr. Allen Allison who has finally completed the transfer of funds and is waiting impatiently for me to supply my personal information to his secretary Mrs. Ellen Pager in order to send me the $800,000 he owes me for all my kind assistance as long as i quit trying to contact officials of the bank.

CHOPSTICK #3: Obedience is not my style. That's why I dumped that loser Chopstick #4, he was always telling me I had to come and meet him for a bite to eat.
CHOPSTICK #1: Partnership is the essence of true chopstickhood. Whithout your partner you're just an oversized splinter!
CHOPSTICK #4: Let me take you to lunch, honey, and I will let you see my oversized splinter!
I'm sure every chopstick would faint and walk with you to lunch in a trance-like state upon hearing such a refined invitation. However, there're some rules to follow here. Notably, every new line in the discourse thread starts with the following letter of the alphabet. ;)

I'll properly reply to your mail later when I have more time (Monday at work? ;)), but:
Yes, that is so, you found exactly the right words to express how it is!
Mmh, this unnormality goes since a year now, figure meanwhile it won't be fixed at all....
Yes, I should do that, as soon there's a possibility. It makes me feel uncomfy though.

We have what you descendants of the people who crossed Asia on horseback call kifli, it's called Hörnchen
Ha! I very much doubt my ancestors would have made it to the heart of Europe on Hörnchen diet... ;)
Actually, I think the word we use was borrowed from our Austrian neighbours (Gipfel... Gipfli)*, and modified to our tastes in pronunciation. Both Gipfel and Hörnchen have pointy ends, like kifli.
* they like to overuse the -li diminutive ending
I am a linguist at the core, at least that's what I should be :)
