Football tackles schizophrenia and depression

Tom Kington in Rome
Monday January 8, 2007
The Guardian

An Italian psychiatrist is obtaining startling results with patients suffering from schizophrenia and depression by enlisting them in a competitive football team. Mauro Raffaeli trains his players, many of whom cannot work and are on psychiatric medication, twice a week on a pitch on the outskirts of Rome.
Of the 80 who have passed through the ranks since the team formed in 1993, over half have cut down their drug intake, but more importantly, more than half have returned to work. "Drugs you can often never get rid of, but reintegrating into society is as important," he said.

Former accountant Luca Enei saw his life "go off the rails" when depression set in, but after signing up with Dr Raffaeli's team he returned to work as a security guard, married and had four children.
Psychology graduate and schizophrenic Benedetto Quirino was pestered by voices in his head until he became a rightwinger for Dr Raffaeli. "When you run out on the pitch, the voices stop," he said. "Your opponent is no longer inside you, he has come out and you can dribble round him and beat him."

Since the team was formed, 50 other squads of mental patients have sprung up around Italy, but Dr Raffaeli's charges remain the benchmark, winning the 2006 all-Italy tournament and are now in search of international fixtures.

The team's exploits are also the subject of a documentary film, Mad about football, which focuses on players such as Sandro Faraoni, a former presidential bodyguard who bounced back from schizophrenia to become a stalwart defender and now a painter and poet.

"Mental health sufferers are often locked inside themselves, and football allows them to open up," said film-maker Volfango di Biasi, who wants to de-stigmatise illnesses such as schizophrenia in the film.

As self-medication, I have chosen a method involving a small timer that I wear around my neck.

I will allot 1 hour per day to all internet activities: emails, forums, blog reading etc...

someone at work suggested electroshock therapy too. A bit too kubrickated for the likes of me i'm afraid.

So far I'm up to 1 hour 45 minutes today. That's already 15/30 minutes knocked off from last week. It's also 45 minutes above my goal :(

As I read the Book of Genesis, God didn't give Adam and Eve a whole planet.

He gave them a manageable piece of property, for the sake of discussion let's say 200 acres.

I suggest to you Adams and Eves that you set as your goals the putting of some small part of the planet into something like safe and sane and decent order.

One time I wandered downstairs in the wee hours of the morning, looking for something to quiet my stomach's growling, and I spotted a package of wasabi peas open on the counter. I was still in a sleep stupor, so I kinda wobbled over and grabbed a handful, not entirely sure what they were. After I realized that my tongue was on fire (or my brain THOUGHT my tongue was on fire), I distinctly remember racing over to the sink, but missing because of my impaired sense of balance. I ran into the counter, bounced back, and dropped the rest of my peas.

Cleaning them up while my tongue burned and knee throbbed was oh so fun.

I haven't had 'em since. :(

The West Ham United anthem - 'I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles'

I'm dreaming dreams
I'm scheming schemes
I'm building castles high

They're born anew
Their days are few
Just like a sweet butterfly

And as the daylight is dawning
They come again in the morning

I'm forever blowing bubbles
Pretty bubbles in the air
They fly so high
Nearly reach the sky
Then like my dreams they fade and die

Fortune's always hiding
I've looked everywhere
I'm forever blowing bubbles
Pretty bubbles in the air.

When shadows creep
When I'm asleep
To lands of hope I stray

Then at daybreak
When I awake
My bluebird flutters away

Happiness you seem so near me
Happiness come forth and cheers me

I'm forever blowing bubbles
Pretty bubbles in the air
They fly so high
Nearly reach the sky
Then like my dreams they fade and die

Fortune's always hiding
I've looked everywhere
I'm forever blowing bubbles
Pretty bubbles in the air

Lyrics/Music : Jaan Kenbrovin/John William Kellette

I need to boost my résumé. :(

Does knowing how to centrifuge count as a lab technique?

Probably not, because it's a four step process...

1. Insert vials in a balanced manner.

2. Spin centrifuge for recommended duration.

3. Remove vials.

4. Enjoy! Or splice genes, etc...

How about making coffee? If you can do it while in a laboratory, does it count?

http://www.naturephoto-cz.com/photos/sevcik/white-rhinoceros--ceratotherium-simum.jpg

They are obviously and by definition a unified whole. There's just one rhino there; everything's included; nothing is lacking. However, the rhino, single phenomenon that it is, is less attractive than when viewed from some angles rather than others:

trisherina
06-15-2007, 09:52 AM
I loved it!! First time round watching it I was a little bummed about some of the subtle character changes. But then again, they did evolve a bit throughout the series, and nothing in Serenity was so much of a stretch as to make them unrecognizable. In some cases it was more of a return to the original character from the pilot episode. I still sing the Fruity oaty bar song all the time. I've been trying to find a nice download of it for my cell phone with no success. :p Did you like the movie?

Damn, that's stuck in my head now!

I thought the movie was great, but I actually saw it before watching the entire series, so I was totally confused by the time the plot was in full swing...

I was just lurking elsewhere and thinking about this group of kids I went to high school with. I'm sure everyone had a similar group at their own school. Sometimes, I was on the edge of it myself. They were variously called punks or slackers or whatever, and they spent A LOT of time carefully crafting the impression that they didn't care about what anybody thought of their appearance. It must have taken hours to cultivate just the right wear on their dad's old flannel, get their hair just so, mussed perfectly, so that they could say, "Hey, I don't care about your authoritarian carp! My hair has got to be at least THREE INCHES over my collar!! No one could care less than I do! You're all sheep! HEY, LOOK WHAT I'M DOING NOW...I'm putting yet more duct tape on my Chucks!! That's what I think of you and your holier-than-thou ways! So there! Why don't you tell me what you think of that?!?

Aw, I hate when that happens. Sorry Jack. :(

Are you using Firefox? If so, I think the 'marks are saved in some safely hidden place on your comp. Also, you can check out this nifty thing (http://www.foxmarks.com/). :D

I think something of a 40-year-old virgin called last night to break up with me.
I didn't realize we were dating.
Somehow, I am the one that felt pathetic. :o

I seem to have rebounded pretty quickly. :D

Did you know?

The most famous cluster balloon flight took place on July 2, 1982 when a 33-year-old truck driver from San Pedro, Calif. set out to do some sightseeing.

Larry Walters, with no prior ballooning experience, attached 42 six-feet helium weather balloons to a Sears lawn chair, intending to go up a few hundred feet. But instead, he soared to 16,000-feet and was seen by passing airliners. (Imagine the conversations those airline pilots must have had when they looked out their cockpit window and saw a man sitting on a lawn chair floating by at 16,000 feet!)

Walters brought along pellet gun so he could shoot out the balloons when he was ready to descend, as well as a parachute and a CB radio so he could communicate with his friends below.

Unfortunately, he lost his glasses during his quick ascension and later dropped his pellet gun and crashed into power lines. However, he was not injured.

The FAA fined him $1,500 for his flight, and he later gained notoriety, appearing on “The Tonight Show” and “Late Night with David Letterman.”
