my happy today is that an experimental batch of soap i made 6 weeks ago is finally fully cured and i used a bar in the shower this morning and it was marvelous. a smashingly fantastic bathing experience. i can't stop touching my own skin.

I'm giggling to myself in my living room while everyone is sleeping, and thinking about accidentally blowing up rosebushes in the dirt bread.
This morning, a red-winged blackbird flew around the yard, drawn by the cherry tree. I thought they only lived in books. I've wanted to see one since I was a little girl studying my grandmother's bird pictures.
I didn't know that real feathers could be so scarlet.
When he finally flew away, I tasted my tea, and it had grown cold and spicy.

ever seen "fight club"?
you mix oils/fats with caustic lye (sodium hydroxide). chemistry happens and soap is the result. you can make it in a safe way if you take basic precautions. i wear goggles and gloves and i mix the lye solution outside. also, i write "lye" and "poison" on all of my tools so no one can mistake them for eating-utensils.
today's experimental bar was made with rosemary-infused olive oil, organic hempseed oil, coconut oil, and has bits of chopped up fresh rosemary all through it for texture. in five weeks i'll be able to try another set of experimental batches, and i can't wait. one was made with mango nectar and mango butter and the other one was made with avacado oil, mashed fresh avacado meat, and agave nectar. :)

actually, i haven't figured out what to do with all of this soap yet. i'm going to have to invent a bunch of holidays just to give them away as gifts.

i made the rosemary infused oil, yes. the straight oils are purchased in bulk. also, i'd never thought about caustic soda before making soap. then i found out that people use it for household cleaning, and that seems insane to me. i got one little grain on my wrist the other day and thought an angry, angry bee had stung me. ow.
Frieda
05-05-2007, 06:59 PM
how did you do the rosemary, do you use steam to extract the oils?
auntie aubrey
05-05-2007, 07:19 PM
nope, just plopped a handful of rosemary sprigs in a jar of olive oil and let it sit for 2 weeks. then removed the twigs and *whiff* the olive oil smells rosemary-riffic. the benefit is that the olive oil itself will saponify into soap during the lye mixing process. the rosemary compounds drawn into the oil are unsaponifiable and remain within the soap to be delivered to your skin. i do teas for dried herbs, oil infusions for fresh herbs. i made a "chocolate and roses" batch where i made rosehip tea and used it for the lye solution, then when i was mixing it all together i separated out a third of the batch and mixed in a bit of cocoa powder. then drizzled the cocoa part of the batch over the rest and made swirls. the bars smell lightly of chocolate and roses. they haven't cured yet so i haven' ttried them. so i can't vouch for their quality yet. could be total crap.
Frieda

but the type of oil must change how much lye you have to use, right? and if you want a softer type of soap you add less lye? is that how it works?
i've got several medicinal plants growing here.. but the weather is so fvcked up that the camomile is already in bloom.. last year we had too much rain.. so i havent had any good fresh camomile for a while! the mint plant is doing great, i got it last year and this year i split the plant and now i keep one indoors for cooking & drinks.. i have to keep everything indoors because of the airplanes.
auntie aubrey
05-05-2007, 07:39 PM
yup, you have to calculate the amount of lye you use based on a saponification table. each kind of oil takes a different amount of lye to fully react and turn completely into soap. math is not my strong suit, so this has been the only downside to the hobby.
i tried to make a chamomile based soap a couple of weeks ago. made a strong tea from dried chamomile and used it for the lye solution. then i decided to mix it with jasmine essential oil when i went to pour it into the mould. turns out the two scents didn't go well together. :(
eta: the softness of the soap has more to do with the type of oil you use and its properties. different soaps contain different types and quantities of fatty acids, which impart different qualities to the end product. using less lye just means there's more free-roaming fat left in the resulting bar when you're finished (which can be marvelous, if you calculate right and you want a moisturizing bar). but if you've used a fat that sets up hard, it will set up hard no matter what. palm kernel oil, for example, makes a hard bar. olive oil, on the other hand, makes softer bars. saturated fats = harder. unsaturated fats = softer.

some book/website with tables and calculations?
great site for instructions and recipes. (http://www.teachsoap.com/) always recalculate any recipes you find online. just verify that the person who posted it didn't have a transcription error.
my favorite lye calculator. (http://www.brambleberry.com/lye_calc_1.php) you'll want a scale, too. measure your oils and lye by weight, not volume.
lastly, i use a stick blender because soap can take a long time to thicken, or "come to trace" when you stir by hand. just realize that if you stir by hand you might be doing so for up to an hour. also, anything you use that touches the soap making ingredients should never be used for food again. so whether you use a stick blender or a spoon, dedicate it to this task. don't ever mix a protein shake with a stick blender that was used for lye-based soap!
have fun! i find the process very relaxing and meditative. and if you're growing your own herbs, you're going to have a lot of fun coming up with creative combinations.

I want to work in that office.
My delight this morning:
The sun has returned, and it's finally spring in my pretty town. The air is so fragrant with flowers, and the senior high schoolers all over the city are about to graduate. It's a time of fevered anticipation for them, of waiting - waiting for all sorts of answers, like final grades and college acceptance letters. And, for the last two weeks or so, they've been looking for the beautiful, perfect frock, or tux rentals that the girlfriend approves of. You really can feel the excitement in the downtown shop windows, all awash with color and organza and ruffled shirts. There are hand-lettered signs on florist carts saying "Now taking corsage orders - mini-carns, orchids, roses, gardenias." Young suitors and their ingenues are choosing hairdressers and making dinner and limousine reservations - if they're lucky in love, well-financed, and organized.
But some are none of that, and have definitely left certain things for the last minute. In that situation, ingenuity is called for.
On my usual bus route this morning on the way to work, I glanced down into a hollow of shabby, low-rent apartments surrounded by dense foliage at the bottom of one of the embankments. I noticed a large, shared driveway - mostly because I saw something new that hadn't been there yesterday.
It was huge and unmistakable from at least two blocks away.
Oriented toward the door of the apartment of some young woman, in the middle of the night some industrious suitor had painted in enormous, fifteen-foot letters - for all the world to see
.................................................. .................PROM?
I just had to smile, and it made me happy picturing the reaction of the girl when she walked out the door - and also of her parents wigging out when they saw the driveway all painted up that way.

That would be me. :D
As I said to myself this morning, upon realizing that prom is just around the corner: "Oh. I need to get something to wear. That would probably be a tux, right?"
Great story, Brynn. That gave me a gigantic happy. :D
While I was sitting in beautiful (sometimes...) NYC today, eating lunch and casually skimming my novel-of-choice, I noticed something odd about the hundreds of people passing me.
Nearly all of them, except for the few taking advantage of their pockets and straps, were swinging their arms jauntily as they walked by. Everyone had their own tempo. In fact, people that looked the happiest were waving their limbs around wildly, attracting the attention of the passerbys.
Something else I noticed was that people walking in pairs or trios often swung their arms in rythym with each other. It was like some kind of non-verbal communication was going on! I began to think of sociological experiments that I could put into action! My findings would revolutionize social science! It would be entitled:
Group Syncronicity In the Swinging of Upper Limbs
Needless to say, this did not last long...But when I got up to leave the campus I was on, I was compltely self-conscious about what I was doing with my arms. I didn't want to overswing, but underswinging might be interpreted by (imaginary) close observers around me as symptoms of antisociality.
I was so preoccupied that I walked into a lovely woman from Greenpeace asking for my signature so she and her organization could fight globalwarming, save whales, etc. She was midsentence, so here's what I'm sure people around me heard:
"You may know us as those people who 'save the whales', but let me tell you, we are a VERY different - whhoooooAAAAAHH!" *multiple pens and a clipboard falling*
After I blushing helped her clean it up (and gave her my sig, too!) and apologized, I realized that I'd been thinking about arm-swinging for close to an hour.
And that gave me a foolish sort of happy :D
(Sorry this was so long, but I wanted to share it in a place where there wasn't a chance I would be laughed at!)

I had a three-happy day (four if you count Auntie's fantabulous link above).
In the park across from my office, I saw a Great Dane walking himself. He was on his leash on like a good city doggy, but his person was sitting on a bench while moosedog ran around frolicking with the end of the leash in his mouth. And I swear the dog was SMILING.
My flying screaming monkeys from woot.com were delivered.
My vacation photos arrived. My most absolute favorite is the very last photo we took. We saw Ron Jeremy at the airport, and my husband took a photo of me and Ron. It makes me laugh every time I look at it. Frameworthy for sure. I may even have it made into Christmas cards at the end of the year.

the ramones really changed my life. my first band's set consisted of their first album almost in its entirety. those songs were so easy to play! and if they could be in a band, anyone could. one of the very few punk bands i can still listen to today. i wish they'd split up after 'rocket to russia' though, they might still be alive.

I'm humming a tiny insignificant secret that's giving me an anticipatory happy, and when I finally find out what it is, I will probably be as disappointed as I think I'll be, except that I'm expecting to be disappointed, so I won't be disappointed at all, technically - and it's so insignificant that the potential disappointment is insignificant as well and that makes me relax and just be happy right now.

this gave me a happy too today :D
so I'm quoting it so it can be here twice :D
I feel like writing. Here's a long story about an unexpected happy.
My desk is usually tidy but sometimes things start piling up. Last night it was so cluttered there was no clear space at all, just piles of books and paper. I meant to clean it up this weekend. I often leave jars of water on it but I don't really worry about knocking them over because I'm rarely clumsy, especially around my desk.
Now picture the scene. It was late at night and a cold one too. I had a nice warm bed to crawl into and it was past my bedtime but I had a really good book so I thought I'd read a chapter of it first. I went to my desk to find the book and accidentally bumped a very large jar of paint and water.
Total disaster. I started throwing everything I could off the desk and towelling up the water. Painty water soaked into excersize books, textbooks, study notes, a black texta drawing (ink everywhere) and drafts of poetry and stories, not to mention all over the floor. Then I heard the worst noise possible: trickling. The water had flooded the first drawer and was flowing into the others. It got into a drawer of paper and a drawer of coloured paper.
The funny thing was, although my coloured paper was precious, I ended up with blue that had a tie-dye pattern of watermarks, pink splattered with purple, yellow with green, green with brown. And all of my good art paper, calligraphy sets, stationery, sketchbooks and everything else of worth was either in a lower drawer or on the other side of the desk. The only important thing I had left on the desk was a half-finished watercolour painting and that, wonder of wonders, was in a plastic ziplock bag.

They would start out in the same place, but around 10 seconds into the song, it would become a free-for-all, until the unintentional round would come to a screeching halt when the musicians began to think "Screw it, there's no salvaging this..."

My son has adopted approximately 30 teeny weeny hatchling land snails. We're seeing whether they'll eat cucumber. What the hell am I going to keep 30 hatchling land snails in? They can get out of anything with air holes.

tonight the spouse and i went out after dark after the rain stopped and crunched through the woods until we were well surrounded by darkness. we then set up a tripod and opened the camera shutter for extended periods of time while walking around in-frame with a halogen bulb flashlight, just to see what it would look like.
the rain had stopped but water was still dripping from the branches above us. and being georgia, the sweltering humidity kicked in and a lovely fog rolled across several of the shots, softening the light's beam.
at one point we heard crunching nearby and swung the light around, only to catch a mama deer and her two babies gazing at us through the trees. we shut off the light and stood silently in the pitch-black until our eyes adjusted enough to pick up billions of pinpricks of light flashing in the trees. more fireflies than i've ever seen in my entire life.
the best part of the photography aspect was the fact that we were in-frame in every shot, but invisible to the camera. it's like we were moving between time, lighting everything we wanted to be seen, moving too fast for film.
here's your auntie, if you can see between time:

While walking back from our local garden, my mom and I were joking around - lots of insulting, name-calling, etc.
Spoonerisms are big in my family, so after I made some "particularly condescending comment", she called me a "Smartypants", and then a "Pantysmarts".
We later agreed that this was a kind of male sexual know-how. :D
I rarely see her during the year, so it gave me a happy.

That's amazing, auntie. I think I can imagine what the billions of fireflies must've looked like, and it's beautiful.
What are the ripples on the right side of the frame from? The flashlight?

What are the ripples on the right side of the frame from? The flashlight?
yes. the only light out there was from the flashlight so the inconsistencies in the illumination results from tracing across surfaces with the beam.
Growing up in the Midwest, we called them lightning-bugs.
i grew up in the midwest and called them lightning bugs, too. i started calling them fireflies when i moved south. it's an adaptation to the regional dialect. kind of like how i used to say "crayfish" but now i say "crawfish." i draw the line at "crawdad" though.

And also, whilst searching for the pic above, I found this photo, which US scientists maintain is the surfacing of whale flatulence. It's not so much the fact of the event that I find amusing; it's that scientists would take a photo and then feel compelled to post it on the web. Just like I'm doing right now.

That no flash thing took me right back to my visit to Memphis and the prerequisite Graceland tour. " No flash pictures are allowed as they will degrade the artifacts" They said it with straight faces and I lost it...Graceland horrified me, so I had to put my hands over my face. THEN I got in even more trouble when I refused to wear the headphones they passed along...they didn't even use a wipe on them between tours! Anyway, the whole memory makes me laugh and makes me happy. Thanks for reminding me!
