This is kind of a weird happy, but for some reason, I liked it. Found a scorpion mom with tons of babies on her back. They're oddly round, and their tiny pincers and tails move when their mom is agitated. She was clearly very interested in protecting them, and I just read that they grind up prey to feed them. (Who knew that baby scorpions are called "scorplings"?) Even though scorpions give me the willies a bit -- the stings hurt like the dickens -- I felt some kinship with her, as I was making sure my son was safe from her just like she was making sure her babies were safe from me. As cool as she was, she's been relocated away from the house. :D

Thank you cj, for posting this. I've been following this story on a call-in radio program on NPR (BBC's "World Have Your Say") while I work. At some point in each broadcast, people have called in with messages of hope for him ("Alan, you don't know me, but you are loved and thought about, and not forgotten." "Do not give up hope!"). While one part of me joined them in their best hopes for him, another couldn't help but think "Wow, that poor guy's a goner." So since I'm not at work today, I'm just finding out about his release here. :) :) :) What relief!
This bit made me cry with happies:
"He appeared with a cleanly-shaven head, saying one of his first acts after his release was "going to the barbers and getting rid of that just-kidnapped look".
"Maybe you have to have been a prisoner of some kind, for some time, to know how good it is just to be able to do the basic things that freedom allows," he said.
"You want to do everything at the same time, to read books and newspapers, go to the movies, go to the beach and sit in the sun, and eat and talk and all the rest of it."
Anyway, thanks.

Muttered some more, shook the machine.

While sitting on the bus this afternoon, I was listening to "Chromakey Dreamcoat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZ2BT3SBO9U)", by Boards of Canada. Across from me, a man slouched in the seat, looking like he was on the verge of collapse. As the song's phrases progressed, he started to fall asleep, until his head was down against his chest. Jolted, he woke back up, raised his head, and then promptly fell asleep again. Across the bus, eight pairs of eyes, including my own, watched his head fall and rise as he drifted in and out of consciousness.
and I realized that just like the ambient sounds, the people on the bus were completing a cycle.
and that beautiful, perfect parity gave me a sort of inspirational happy.
It makes me want to write some poetry, or something. :)

^I always applaud the effort to write poetry, but be warned that should you try to capture that sort of experience perfectly, you'll be in the inspiration/futility thread in no time.
Alas!
But that's what makes the experience so cool. And the nice thing is, from now on, when you read a poem that touches it a little, rings a little bell, you'll enjoy poetry all the more.

That my grandpa is really doing fine after yesterday's operation!! :) :) :)
It was only a relatively small affair this time, but only 4 weeks ago he had an emergency operation where things balanced on a knife's edge (I learned that all only afterwards, my granny kept it secret till I came back from the conference - she knew I'd had taken the next plane north asap) and although I see him eternally young, he's 78 after all...
He was in jolly good mood when I just phoned him:
He: "Oh, and these nurses, how young and beautiful they are! And what things they're doing with me... *in pretended ashamed tone* you know, they shaved me in places where I never shaved myself."
Me: "Well, heard that's fashionable for men this season."
He: *laughing hard*
Me: *getting the giggles*
He: *still laughing* "Hey, dontcha piss your pants, girl!"
That's me grandpa, alive & kickin :D

Will do. And I will come back with many glorious PAX stories, I'm sure.
Yesterday I took myself to a movie.
There were two other people in the theatre. No one else.
I finally figured out the pattern of the little flashing star lights on the ceiling. Each is wired to turn on and off at a different time interval, so collectively there is no pattern at all, but singularly each is regular.
The movie was beautiful. It was called Snow Cake. Look it up if you want.

There's a new taco stand a mile from my house. You could use half an ounce of their salsa to singe all the hair off a freshly killed wild boar and still have enough to bleach the driveway. I'm not sure but I think there might be shards of glass in it. I can't feel my lips.
I'm very happy to have found a place that knows how to make the good stuff.

APPEAL:

open yourself, wide;
join (you, me),

tell me.
do something if distressed;

read (books,$poems,stories) until peaceful;
study if able;
write me if-you-please;
sort your feelings, reset goals, seek (friends, family, anyone);
do*not*die (like this)
if sin abounds;

do not, I-beg-you, close them, yet.

I found this little beauty while cleaning out the shed yesterday. It's some kind of skink and not an uncommon sight in gardens around here, especially now the weather is warming up. I got quite a shock when I saw its tail; I've never seen anything like it.
Some lizards like skinks can 'drop' or pull off the end of their tail when seized by a predator. The disembodied tail wriggles madly to distract the predator while the lizard makes its getaway. The tail will grow back over time, so I can only guess that this one has had its tail damaged and grown a new one as well as healing the old one.

I would like to review my cat. His name is Smoke and we have had him for eight months. He doesn't take up a lot of room, so that is nice. He is self cleaning, self propelled and occasionally eats spiders. He speaks a strange cat language I have yet to decipher. This might be an oversight on the part of the manufacturer and someday I will take that up with a higher power. He is well suited for looking adorable. He is not so well suited for housework, another nit I will someday discuss with the manufacturer.
So far he has cost us $450 in vet bills, which is considerably less than the cost of having a baby. I feel that we are ahead and overall I give him 9 stars out of 10. I'm still trying to get over that little incident with my grandmothers china hutch.

During the last week, my mom moved into my apartment complex, in the building just 30 yards from mine.
When she use to live miles from me, I could never ignore her when she was at my door coz I knew she made the effort to travel in her car the miles to see me.
Today was different. She knocked, and I knew if I didn't answer, she'd merely have a short distance to return home. My mom is 82.
I answered the door, and we spoke and laughed for nealy an hour.
It truely was a happy moment.:)
Today I read through a collection of my poetry from when I was 12 and 13.
:o It was moving.

Met one when I was out for a smoke, he was not afraid, and after some finger-antenna-saying-hello thingie he crawled on my arm, walked around on my back, thereby tickling me in the neck and finally sat down on my shoulder, till I started typing this, then he flew outside.

^Once a grasshopper inexplicably fell off the roof lining of my car and into my lap. He rode there for about 10 miles, until I found a nice wildflowery place to let him off. He appeared to be very calm about the whole thing.

oh yes, i remember when i was a tree surgeon once i met a puppy who hurt its leg and i saved it and put it into a baskit and then and then yeah he was all better 'n shit and then i saved a couple of other puppies and a dead squirrel and put them on my living room shelf

Yesterday I looked out the front windows of work and see a man skipping down the sidewalk. He was very tall, in his forties, and skipping with his arms waving the whole bit. I was like "wtf? the freaks around here". Than a voice comes from the left, "Daddy Waaaaiiiit Dadddy!" - two little girls.

Last night it was cool and clear, so I went for a walk with a few spurts of running. After a nice long stretch, I was laying down on the driveway-- just admiring the few precious visible stars and enjoying the calm-- breathing. Then the song changed, and while gathering up my shirt and shed accessories, I noticed a Rorschach pattern on the pavement where I had just been.
That first glance induced an "Oh, not motor oil!" reaction, and I instinctively grabbed the back of my shirt to validate this conclusion. But, my hand's sensory receptors revealed the glistening response that accompanies most physical highs, sweat.
And that gave me a happy.

1. take ludicrously picky exam, and steadfastly refuse to worry about it
2. lie in incredibly sweet-smelling, freshly mown grass field, half under a big tree
3. share sandwich and blue corn chips with squirrel
