It's worth learning Russian just to enjoy the incredible linguistic feat that is his translation of Alice in Wonderland. He works magic with the nonsense words -- manages to translate them faithfully, it's amazing.

Tonight a stranger asked me if I was doing well. I guess I was standing there staring at him, nodding my head, because he asked it two or three times. He was looking at me with the sort of eyes that are either seeing through to the back of your head but more likely straight to your soul, looking for a nuance that will give the meaning of my nod away. I felt like I could tell this guy, whom I'd only talked to once before, absolutely anything and he'd have some good insight for me but even if not, would give a shit. It was nice to come across a person like that.

Yesterday as I was walking down the street I saw two little girls, maybe eight years old, walking together. One dropped an envelope without noticing and kept walking. I picked it up and gave it back to her, but as I picked it up I saw a woman start to move towards it before realising I already had it. It gave me a happy to think that I wasn't the only one who would do a little good deed like that.
Then as I walked further on I thought maybe she wasn't doing a good deed. Maybe she was going to open it to see if there was any money inside. Was I being unhealthily cynical there?

I got a happy after finding a song influenced by Jonathan Lethem's Motherless Brooklyn:
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7SEXR6nIEz4"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7SEXR6nIEz4" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
The lyrics are pretty great, especially this stanza:
And it's a sorry, frightful thing
when you want to cry, but you can't keep from laughing.
Outside the church that's so quiet it dares you to shout
you put a hand to your mouth to stop the rain.
You do a St. Vitus dance, to the sky you raise your voice.
T.I.P.
09-30-2007, 01:26 PM
^^ you guessed right, it was awesome !
They did an Edgar Varese piece that rocked everybody's socks off. There is alot to be said about a 50 person crescendo :)
Contemporary music is not always to my liking, but if Boulez is directing it is a sure sign that something interesting is going to happen. His presence on stage is amazing: he is extremely calm (impassive facial expression) yet completely in control of every aspect of the music. From the moment he walks on stage, not a single movement he makes is wasted - there is a very zen quality to the whole performance.
He is also probably a bit of a control freak in real life ;)

radiohead's new one is out.
there's nothing better than the very first listen through an album that you've been waiting for since the beginning of time.
i feel like this
http://img.gkblogger.com/blog/imgdb/000/000/081/619_2.jpg
i saw that with this new album, them radioheads are experimenting with a very novel music delivery model, and have surely put the cat amongst the pigeons with this business of exclusively offering their album as a download from their website (http://www.inrainbows.com/Store/Quickindex.html) (nice colours!) on a "pay/donate as much/little as you feel it's worth" basis.
what's it like? are there lots of good new noises+beats the like of which humans have never heard before? that's what we expect of them, no?
auntie aubrey
10-10-2007, 02:49 PM
it's not as innovative as their previous releases. it's self-referential at best and derivative at worst throughout the album. "bodysnatchers" is a dead ringer for "palo alto" off of the "airbag/how am i driving" EP. still, they manage to make even the derivative pieces sound fresh and new. it's a very good album but it probably won't reveal new musical worlds like, say, "kid a" did.
the distribution concept is interesting but i really feel there were some crucial details they should have released ahead of time. for example, the bitrate is low (160) compared to what most people would rip a CD at. then again, they pulled from the source material so for 160s they sound damn clean.
additionally, no album art. i didn't expect my $15 to go towards massively compressed files with no artwork. if i'd known these details, i'd've paid less. fortunately the spouse already whipped up a quick bit of album art based on the album's website graphics. still, for $15, they should have delivered.
my bliss outweighs my annoyance, though.
thank you auntie, for your kind assistance in this matter. i'll have a wee think about all this.

there's nothing like the fresh-from-vacation happy.
i saw stars. more stars than i've ever seen in my life. it made me so happy i nearly cried every night.
i wish i'd had a remote for my camera so my long-exposures didn't end up all motion-blurry. still, this is what i saw:

BIGGEST HAPPY EVER! :D
For two years, at least.
I got my subject choices back - finally! :) There was a one-in-a-very-large-number chance for me to get what I wanted without clashes.
Well it happened! :o Next year I'm studying art, biology, chemistry and ceramics as well as the three-unit maths course that was stuffing up all the other choices.
The only problem is the ceramics class which has a question mark next to it, but they've told me I can 'officially' do it so try and stop me now, poopheads!

Standing at the skytrain platform, shivering in the cold, I started to be aware of all the different variations of the "keeping warm" dance that people do. Everyone does it a little differently, from swaying side to side, to hopping, to what could almost be classified as tap dancing. It made me grin like an idiot, and I considered how crazy we would all look doing the same movements if it were a hot day.

^Oh my god, I wish I had a bajillion dollars to bid on that. I'd have a postcard sent to my best friend mentioning that she considered naming her cat "Chones."*
You know, there are ze monkeys all over...I'll bet we could cook up something similar amongst ourselves...

well, i could send some through regular mail, they will probably arrive in 3 years from now.. this given the fact that priority air mail takes 2-6 weeks! even a postcard from friggin mali in africa took 4 days to arrive dammit and that's what i pay those 89 cents for![/rant Frieda vs. dutch postal services]
except that i don't have any really old postcards. i think you should realise that your friend might be more freaked out by the fact that you gave someone on the internut their personal address!

I was sitting on the skytrain with my new beau, just laughing and being silly, when a older man came up to us and said that he "hadn't seen a love like that in a long time", and that it melted his cold heart. I thanked him, and he moved on.
It was very sweet, and gave me such a big happy.

^^this part gave me especial happys
Guitar Hero I, II, III, and Rockin in the Whatsis did little for me, frankly. But Rock Band gives me a bit of a happy.

One of those happys-in-unexpected-places.
I went for an afternoon dip to cool off in a rather remote beach that requires a bit of driving through bushland dirt-tracks to get to. On the way back, in the middle of nowhere, some lunatic in a great big 4-wheel-drive came out from a side road and went roaring out in front of me, cut me off and tore off down the road ahead in a cloud of dust, scowling on his way past.
Turns out that the big car stirred up all the dirt the whole way back, so as I drove home the afternoon light coming through the trees was scattered by the dust and turned into these beautiful glowing shafts of light all along the road. It was the kind of thing that gets put on posters or has poetry written about it, but I was driving through it in 3D and it was really magical - all because of this idiot driving too fast.
Being at home with everything I need and feeling safe and being here, and there.

My baby sis, I know her now only since a bit over year, and although that and her being 12 years younger it's total soul-mind-everything-mateness! :) It's so amazing, we even share that secret (and rather uncommon for my and even more her age group) thingie for Depeche Mode :o
Berlino, la più bella città del mondo, your lights, your noises, your streets, your people - even the welcome back weather (rain, scarcely above the freezing point, slippery grey mud) is tutto perfetto, ti amo!! :)

Sunday, sunshine, cinema tonight :)
Today I threw out (into the recycling bin) eight kilograms of paper in the form of old study notes and workbooks. The thought of all my weird little margin-notes and snide comments about the course content swirling round and dissolving in a big vat of recycled paper-mush amuses me to no end.
Now, and only now, does it begin to feel like a new year.
