Pictures of the new arrival. She is about four. We don't know much about her back story, except that she was surrendered to the shelter by a humaine worker, so she can't of had the happiest of lives. She is very friendly and affectionate, and certainly chose us to take her home. We've had her just over a week now. She's still quite skinny, but she is on a kitten food diet for the next month till the vet thinks she's fat enough.

She came with the name Misty, but we are considering alternatives.

She's the spitting image of my sweet Cushla Macree ("pulse of my heart") who mysteriously died last summer. Caramel tabbies are the best - so irridescent and purring and soft.

thank you both you gave me joint-equal happy of the day

so far..

http://www.sandalandsoxer.co.uk/argyles.jpg

The stripes on the chairs and the shirt juxtapose the post-industrial ennui of 20th century Western society with the carefree sexual mores depicted in the dots on the carpet. The foreshortened knees of both the man and the nude portrait express the fundamental human desire for inclusion and affordable donuts, while the books lay the hedonism of the intellect firmly in the background. But I am struck most of all by the subject's beret and argyle, flaunting both his French heritage and man's archetypal yearning to be perceived as Scottish.

http://www.sandalandsoxer.co.uk/orange%20socks.jpg

i feel a certain fundamental irony in this image, as our besocked/besandaled friend poses with "the noid." the characters famous tagline is, of course, "avoid the noid," and our friend seems to be experiencing the onset of the irony as perhaps he realizes that his socks/sandals combo should be equally aversive, and yet somehow he's managed to embrace both.

Results of my grandpa's post-therapy out: no cancer there anymore, he doesn't even need to take hormons any longer!!!!!!!!!!!!
:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

They celebrated with apple pie (Perla, if you ever happen to be in Lower Bavaria and craving for homemade pie --> check in at my grandma's kitchen!), he took 4 pieces, yeah and then afterwards he rehearsed for his gig at the home for old people (he volunteers there, playing zither + singing, the old folks totally dig him and he digs being their superstar; he couldn't play there for several months though cos of the operations and later the daily radiation therapy...). But as he's a healthy man now again (quote of my granny: "rosy and looking content like a laughing Buddha"), my granny (aka "The Red Herma" - a nick she got in the 60s or so for being one of the only two socialdemocrats for miles around - and a rebellious one at that, disturbing the conservatives' party meetings and stuff, only last year she was at a demo against the neo-nazi shop in their town - RESPECT! she could hardly walk cos of her back...) went political on him: He just played "Lustig ist das Zigeunerleben" (=Funny is the Gipsy Life), one of the tunes the old folks love most, my granny went nuclear: "Woah, this old idiots, when they were young they put gypsies into KZs - that's how "funny" gypsies had it..." After some discussion, my grandpa allowed her to go through his programme and x out the questionable content: WW2 soldier songs, Naziesque nature/country folk/herodom stuff - and he's to bring up all his song texts from the cellar for her to check.... That's me granny! :D And life is normal again! :)

that's really nice - one thing that my husband's godmother did for him when he was a baby was to buy a bunch of savings bonds in his name that matured on milestone birthdays ( 18, 21, 30 and 40). She was a really wonderful person in other ways too, so it's nice to think about godmothers in general, thanks Veruki.

Well, today has been rather trying for various reasons, a few tears of frustration, etc. But then my daughter said "Mom, you have to drop what you're doing and come look at this (http://www.notmartha.org/archives/2008/02/27/bacon-cups/) right now! It will make you very happy!"
I looked at it and it did make me happy, but the comments of sheer unadulterated joy and gratitude for this silly clever thing also made me over the top happy - especially around #137. I even enjoy the fact that there are bacon-hating trolls that show up here in this lovely little community of sweet souls.

It's nice to have someone in the world who knows exactly what simple stupid little thing will make you unreasonably happy.

Gives me an immense happy & relief that I have a plan now what to do after I'm through with this uni (shite) :) :) :) :)

My friend and me came up with it during our (meanwhile traditional) pre-going-out teatime (enhanced now with strawberries as it is SPRING!! yay!),
the first part of the plan is something we already had discussed (I think that idea came originally from me, sounds like me totally), though not in a serious way. My friend added the location where to do that and put it on a serious level and first steps to go.

Woah, it's crazy, it's excellent! I love it!!! :) :) :) :)

As soon it takes on shape (gotta check out the location, see whether I dig it, can imagine to live there, run a business there, how we manage to get things going etc) I'll move my ass on the Announcement thread and fill you in - promise!!

more happies: the ultrasound tech feels very strongly that, even though it's a little early to see complete detail, they're both boys.

and the doctor felt very strongly that he was only seeing one placenta. which means they're identical. which is a shocker because we've just assumed they were fraternal.

my gut instinct tells me baby B is going to be a stinker. they were both active and moving around but baby A cooperated and hung out while we peeked. baby B, on the other hand, was a total moving target. when we first looked at him he had both arms flung up over his head and as we moved the scan towards him he turned his head like he was looking directly at us. he then squirmed all over the place and made it hard to make the measurements and measure his blood flow.

i've heard that in the third trimester their ears function well enough to hear the ultrasound. it's still a bit early for that at this point, but when he turned his head and moved his arm like he was waving, i was like, "HOW DOES HE KNOW?!?!"

I love it when people in uniforms are friendly. Sometimes I feel like people (including me) overlook the person under the uniform.
Once, some friends and I were making unauthorised art in someone else's courtyard and a security guard came and told us he was meant to kick us out but didn't want to on account of what we were doing looked interesting.

Stephi_B
05-02-2008, 09:17 AM
^Yes!!

I have joined the demo at a later point, but my friend who marched from the beginning on, told me that those cops who walked besides the drummer group, really struggled holding themselves back from moving to the rhythm - well, they're only humans too :)

It was so nice, when we walked home: police was sitting in their vans, eating drinking - punks, alternatives, were sitting visavis from them on stairs, fences etc asking them smiling across the sidewalk: "Hey, where are you from?" Cops answer smiling back: "From Cologne", Punks: "Woah, that's far off! You want a beer?" Cops, grinning: "Er... officially we're still on duty, but..." Few metres further down the street, a dude with rasta threads, beer and self-rolled ciggie (?;)) leaned inside a police van, chatting with the cops inside, laughing...

Just simply, purely: wow! :) :)

But, although the last years Walpurgis night / May Day were rather peaceful, there WAS concern, because there is a famous squatted house ( Köpi ) which shall be emptied (May 31 methinks, and a quite dubious thing, the man/firm who bought the house did this not directly, but via a dubious guy whose "firm" sits in Kosovo - almost mafialike deal manners - and the plan is to tear down the old building(*) and build luxury flat buildings at this spot, it's located at the river shore) and the whole left scene is up and about because of this of course. So there was (and still is) some concern that riots like last year in Denmark (were a left youth centre was sold to some evangelical sect and they wanted to remove the young folks as they obviously didn't fit the picture they had in mind) could break lose. Since Wednesday for example places like McDonald's, car vendors, larger banks had police presence in front of their doors (my lil Sparkasse was boarded up totally, also since Wednesday afternoon, so I had to run around yesterday quite a bit in search of an outdoor banking machine which worked...)

(*) Actually it is thanks to squatters that so many beautiful old houses of Gründerzeit or Bauhaus style are still standing, the years immediately after the fall of the Wall they (city admin, people of money) would have liked to tear down quite many things in those quarters which today are the scene quarters (just because of that special charme they have) and build some new, soulless office and housing buildings instead. The house I am living in was not squatted, but the one next to us, though the squatters already had left when I moved in (2004).

that the time has come again were you walk home at 4am or thereabouts and it's light already and you can wear a t-shirt only ('kay it was a little bit fresh... but in three, four weeks it'll be perfect I guess);

my new Peruvian shoes which I bought yesterday at Karneval der Kulturen, they are wonderful (handmade, superb leather) and comfy and are like they've been made for my feet and when you walk with them they don't make such a nasty cheap "flip-flop" drugstore / shoe discount flip-flops make, but a warm-toned, good "flip-flop";

stuff and life in general and particular (did I get too much sun? ;)).

He writes love poems for her!!

All too often we have disobeyed the great command to love the Lord our God with our hearts, souls, strength, and minds, and have fallen into an unbecoming antiintellectualism that is a dire cultural handicap as well as a sin. In particular, some among us have betrayed the strong Christian tradition of a high view of science, epitomized in the very matrix of ideas that gave birth to modern science, and made themselves vulnerable to caricatures of the false hostility between science and faith. -Evangelical Manifesto p12 (http://www.evangelicalmanifesto.com/docs/Evangelical_Manifesto.pdf)

thanks for posting - that made me happy.
I thought this part was especially well put:
we readily acknowledge that we repeatedly fail to live up to our
high calling, and all too often illustrate the truth of our own doctrine of sin. We
Evangelicals share the same “crooked timber” of our humanity, and the full catalogue of
our sins, failures, and hypocrisies. This is no secret either to God or to those who know
and watch us.

I just had onna those twilight zone moments. I listen to The Joan Kenley show all the time on iTunes – it’s a fun conversational radio show, great guests and co-hosts, and it really makes me think. Anyway, I had always wondered why her voice was so familiar and totally just put it together (well, actually, I googled her and found her site (http://www.joankenley.com) and wiki) – she’s the voice of a whole lot of voicemail. She’s the one that says “Press seven to delete your message, press nine to save”. I can’t believe I listen to the show all the time and know her voice so well and never actually figured out that she voiced my VM. Trippy! Happy!

^^^ I think somehow I have been waiting for that my whole life.

Anyway, if you'll excuse a good ramble, I was thinking of all you guys when I saw this.

On the long bus trip to Canberra I was sitting in front of a group of small children, siblings and friends I think. The mother of the siblings was telling them to shut up, not very nicely which was sad.

It was a cold early morning and the windows fogged up and the children began drawing on them, writing in crooked letters and making stars and love hearts. They all put their little hand prints on the windows and it struck me that some of them were Aboriginal and some weren't (hand prints are part of traditional Aboriginal art) but it was the most beautiful thing to see them all there together. The little girl whose mother had told her to shut up was writing 'I (heart) Mummy' and that pulled at my heart.

I heard one of them ask, 'Are we going to see Pooh Bear?' and all of a sudden I realised I had forgotten for years that there is a little cave by the roadside in that area which is known as Pooh's Corner and there is a toy bear someone has put there which is known as Pooh Bear.

The children were all pressed up against the window kilometres before the bus got to Pooh's Corner. They reminded me vividly of how I used to do the very same thing, pressing up to the glass just to catch a three-second glimpse of Pooh as the car passed. A little boy poked his head between the head rests of the seats, bright-eyed, quite unafraid and asked me if I was 'looking for Pooh'. I told him yes, I was.

NATURE IS SO AMAZING! (http://www.dizzy-dee.com/recipe/chocolate-cake-in-5-minutes)
I just saw this and my son and I are eating it right this instant. Talk about making fun happen in 5 minutes! We didn't have cake flour, so we just used regular flour, so you should have heard the squealing when most of the ingredients were hanging suspended halfway down the mug - all without dropping and making a mess.:D thanks pearly.

Yesterday, my daughter and I were in Burger King for breakfast. Yeah, I know, but it was her 17th birthday and she begged me...so as we were walking in, she nudged me and whispered "Mom - mom! - watch that kid..."
She nodded to this very little 4 or 5 year old boy who had been following his mom to their table with his food, but halfway there he was so excited that he couldn't contain himself and had stopped in his tracks to open the prize in his kid's meal. He was whispering to himself and jumping up and down and clapping very small fast claps and doing a little mini happy dance, saying "Pokemon cards! I've got Pokemon cards!!!! Wow! Wow!
Remember when something like that was the most important wonderful thing that could happen in a whole day?
My daughter and I smiled at each other and got a big happy from his happy.

As my daughter ordered, she said "I know it's not a kid's meal, but...do you think maybe I could get some Pokemon cards with that?"
The woman behind the counter looked at her very dubiously. Then she looked at me. I shrugged.
"Oh come on now," said my daughter. "It's my birthday, you know!" The lady smiled, looked around to see if the manager was watching, and sneaked a pack of Pokemon cards into her bag, whispering and laughing, "Happy birthday."

My daughter then turned around, smiled at the little boy, wiggled her finger for him to come closer, and handed him the Pokemon cards.
The look that came over his face - he couldn't believe what had just happened to him. He had a fit of sheer joy. His invisible tail started wagging furiously.
"Oh! Wow! More Pokemon cards!" He was so excited, he ran yelling through the restaurant. "Mom! Mom! That girl gave me her cards too!!!!"
