By Sunday it will have been about 40C here for two weeks straight. This forwarded to me today:

A guy at work lives at Maude. His wife sent him these photos of a little Koala which just walked into the back porch looking for a bit of heat relief. She filled up a bucket and this is what happened!

Another forwarded email. This pic is from near me. I forwarded it to a friend and she said the same thing had happened to her husband who also cycles. The woman he was with gave the koala her only water bottle:

Below are some photos of what Koalas are having to do to get a drink.
The photos with cyclists were taken on Tuesday evening (3Feb) Adelaide
on the old Freeway. had been 42C had been like this for over a week.

Ok ??? here. Are Koalas normally shy and antisocial with humans? Are there many Koalas in your area? Is that old hwy. only used by pedestrians and bicyclists (not autos)? What are YOU doing to stay cool and healthy? Feeling for you. It was -10 C here today - I'd rather be cold (sweaters stupid) than that hot. Are children in school? i have more ???? but will hold off. :o

Are Koalas normally shy and antisocial with humans?

Shy, yes. Not so antisocial. We had one fall from the sky onto our decking and she was friendly enough to let us touch her. Just.

Are there many Koalas in your area?

Yes, lots. Our resident male is named Sid. As in Stoner Sid. Before we moved up here I'd never seen a koala in the wild.

Is that old hwy. only used by pedestrians and bicyclists (not autos)?

It's no longer a through road so very few cars use it. It has a good bike track along it so lots of cyclists use it.

What are YOU doing to stay cool and healthy?

I actually went to work today rather than stay home. It's cooler at work and if the power goes out, they give us priority service. These conditions are treated as an emergency situation which means the government sent us all a text message informing us it's hot and to stay cool. The maintenance department at work were far more vigilant though and have sent us detailed instructions on what to do when the power goes out up to and including going to the local service station for supplies of ice if we run out.

Other than that, drinking extra and we do have airconditioning in the bedrooms which means we don't notice the heat overnight. I'm watering heavily each night and keeping the pond topped up for the animals (I saw a possum drinking out of it one night).

We have a week of cooler weather coming up, starting Sunday.

More on the bucket koala:

OK more???? How do your schools deal with the heat? Or are the kids off because it's your summer.

madasacutsnake
02-07-2009, 03:00 AM
They have a hot weather policy. The kids keep their lunches and drinks inside and they don't go outside for breaks. The school canteen serves iceblocks instead of regular food. Up here where there's a lot of bushland, they all have to take a small towel to school in case of fire. (I think that last one is just for the sake of doing "something").

I was asking about the roadway because I'm all for more pedestrian/cycling roadways in my state (country, dammit). A few (so far) of the old unused railroad right-of-ways have been converted for passive transportation and recreation. We just keep trying to push it through the politics.

madasacutsnake
02-07-2009, 04:04 AM
I'm all for anything that keeps them off the roads.

I'm not near the Victoria bushfires but there are some near me, not close or big enough to be worrying so far. Luckily none of my friends/relatives in Victoria have been caught up either, but still, it's not nice to be hearing about all that disaster :( Hope hfox is okay too, and any other Aussie monkeys I'm forgetting.

Brynn - how are doing in this holy hell? The Portland area must be so stressful with the heat.

Brynn
08-01-2009, 01:24 AM
I love it! My husband is grumpy but I'm relaxed and warm and sweaty and feelin' GOOD! It's sunny. the skies are blue. I can just feel myself expanding and getting energized. I actually got some errands done today. I'm not cold and miserable and it's so wonderful!

I'm sitting directly in front of the air conditioner right now, damn the expense. I spent most of the day outside today, though.

It was 107F yesterday - a record for Portland. It's been a little difficult sleeping, but we've been putting the air mattress out on the deck to sleep outside because it's too expensive to run the AC all night.

To deal with the heat yesterday, we went for a hike to one of my favorite places on earth - Oneonta Gorge - a very narrow gorge just off the Columbia River Gorge. The cliffs are high and covered with moss, and the moment you enter the passageway, the temp drops about 10 degrees (to "only" about 97F) so it felt great. To get to the end where the waterfall is, first you have to climb a huge log jam, then at one point you have to wade through icy waist-high snow melt from the falls for a few minutes. I was fully clothed. It was heavenly.

The last time we went ten years ago, there were only about five people there that day. Yesterday it looked like Disneyland - I counted about 70 people all in this narrow 15 foot wide cliff hallway, and then got bored counting.
When we got to the end, it deepens into another pool at the base of the falls, where there were guys diving head first off the cliff face. You know those monkeys in Japan that hang out at the base of the volcano in the hot pools to stay warm? That's what everyone was doing in the cold water. Some guys had obviously been there a long time and were even shivering and starting to show signs of hypothermia.

Here's the approach to the falls - the log jam is actually higher than it looks - it's about 15 ft. at its tallest...it's a little dangerous, but everyone ignores the signs:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7DjxiyspMKQ&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7DjxiyspMKQ&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

This what you get to see at the end of the hike:
