Atheists of the world, convert!

Converts will then be monitored to ensure their religious transformation is genuine and not simply contrived to gain a free holiday. "They can't see this trip as a getaway, but as a religious experience," Mr Ozdemir said.
fvck...there goes that free trip to Club Med-Tibet :( .

Peregrine 07-03-2009 03:23 PM

I'm already an atheist. And I've been practicing meditation and studying the Dharma for years. Buddhism does not require nor forbid belief in any gods. What do I win?

MoJoRiSin 07-03-2009 06:02 PM

Those that crack will win a pilgrimage to the spiritual home of their newly chosen faith, Muslims will go to Mecca, Jews and Christians will go to Jerusalem and Buddhists will go to Tibet, the Guardian reports.
According to the show's slogans, contestants will also win
"serenity" and "the biggest prize ever... the belief in God".

earth to Peregrine .....
(bird of pray)
how exactly do you think that
plane and/or train
got here?

That revolting thingie up there that Brynn posted is probably some kind of bryozoan. They're kind of like coral polyps, but sometimes they secrete a jelly matrix instead of calcium carbonate. Predictably, I have heard of them because nudibranchs eat them. :D

This, on the other hand, is quite obviously from outer space.

Okay, really it's an Antartic sea cucumber affectionately nicknamed a sea pig, but still.
Yick.

Brynn 07-04-2009 10:12 PM

I'm relieved to know that both things are within the range of beings that can be identified as "identifiable." I mean, that's all we need - aliens breeding in the sewers...so how would something like that get there, professor? Two of them setting up house on either side of the tunnel from each other - ? Do they normally grow that big?

I had to look twice at them because to me at first it looked like some kind of asexual porn + KY hoax, but I'm just dirty-minded.

That poor sea pig looks so uncomfortable, resting all his heft on his poor little appendages without the benefit of water to buoy him up. Can't somebody please give him a comfy pillow or something?

Someone has requested MORE information about a disgusting wormy thing! I can hardly contain my joy!

I should qualify all this by saying that I'm not at all sure that's a lump of bryozoans, just my best guess. I wasn't aware they'd recoil from light like that, or more probably, heat. They are animals, though, and can move.

Assuming they are bryozoans, each of those lumpy bits is a colony of many. They spawn sort of spore-style, like corals, so it would be quite likely for them to find a spot in each of those junctions. Also, I don't think that pipe is very big, actually, but bryozoan colonies can form disturbingly jiggly, large, free floating mats of crud.

You can see a few pictures here, but there are hundreds and hundreds of kinds, and they're all really different.

I just googled North Carolina sewer life and found something saying it's tubifex worms, but I dunno. I think those are just the little red worms that you feed goldfish...maybe there's more than one kind.

I could keep going, but surely this is more than enough to kill the thread.

Coffee 07-06-2009 03:32 AM

I will keep checking this thread for more information regarding disgusting blob...err...bryozoan life forms.

Ty for researching this important topic!

MoJoRiSin 07-06-2009 07:45 PM

^ :D TY! :D

Brynn 07-06-2009 08:10 PM

Yes indeed. Otherwise I'd have had to spend quite a bit of time in the "Disturbing Dreams" thread after seeing that thing.
