What is "old"??

Recently this word/concept bumped into me quite often and I wonder what it actually means. Although my biz is with numbers, I feel totally unable to attach "old" to some numbers, it's so subjective. The best definition I ever heard was from my granny (71, but feeling most days like 20 she says - with a lot more aches though ;)):

Quote:

Old is one who stopped adapting his/her attitudes ever anew
(Dunno if she figured that out herself :), or stole it from some other thinker ;))

What do you think?

i think she stole it but it's still good! ;)

Old is when you've lived so long that your brain reboots itself and you start behaving like you were 2 again.

old is when something is advancing towards the end of the average lifespan of said specific object

old can coexist with a lot of other adjectives:

old and graceful
old and weathered
old and nice
old and wise

A good definition either! But then again, it's also a number thing based on some average lifespan, but I think it's more a case to case thing, depending on each object/person and the person perceiving the age/oldness of latter. Think for example of mothers/fathers for whom their daughter/son in a way always stays a young child, no matter if they are going towards 60 themself. Or think of something you find in the bulky waste at the side of the street, something you absolutely dig, whereas somebody else considered it 'old' (in the negative sense) and threw it away.
Thank you for bringing in the positive sides of 'being old'! (which for many people - in the 'highly civilised' Western world at least - are not that outstanding - including myself unfortunately... :( )

[Outro: Ol' Dirty Bastard]

Yeah, we always gotta keep it fly
Fly for you to feel, what you wants to feel
See Wu-Tang like to thank, all the people across the country
All the people in America, all the people outside of America
For listenin to our music
We gotta keep it fly for ya
See this ain't somethin new
That's just gonna come out of nowhere, no!!!
This is somethin OLD, and DIRTY!!
And DIRTY!!
Yeah..

I also think it's a case by case thing. I know some people well into their 90 that are so active, healthy, and full of life that there is no way I can consider them old. At the same time I know 50 yr. olds that are the completely deteriorating. The same could be said of different objects. I think "old" is just a perception based on the energy that radiates from people and objectes.

old is turning around and unlocking the front door because you've forgotten the remote control to the garage, and then remembering it's clenched between your teeth. :o

... when you see your dentures lying in the driveway, still clenching the remote.

Old is when you're late you can't find your car keys and you realize three hours later, once your rendez-vous is over, that you put them in the refrigerator.

Veruki 06-15-2007 01:32 PM

^ in that case i'm a fossil

T.I.P. 06-15-2007 01:39 PM

old is when you no longer feel the need to lie about your age

How many trips to the basement does it take in order to remember to bring up a new light bulb? For me, usually three. :o
