someone gave me a copy of baraka a couple of years ago and i put off watching it for quite some time. then one day on a whim when i was home alone with nothing to do, i slapped it into the DVD player. i had no idea what i was in for.
watching the ragpicker sequence was and continues to be one of the most intensely emotional filmic experiences i've ever been through. it stirred up incredible wells of palpable grief and helplessness. the instant my husband got home i made him sit on the couch and ran it straight through again. and again, incredibly intense pangs of grief and helplessness. i don't know that any bit of film (along with the footage of kowloon walled city) has ever shaken me that way. or caused me to so solidly reaffirm my namby-pamby-liberal commitment to social welfare.
apropos to this thread, that footage makes me cry. not once, not once in a while. but every single time, without fail.
