★think not that strength lies in the big round word★

"
linguist j. addison alexander was once asked whether one could write as well forcibly in words of a single syllable as in long words. He responded with a poem:
think not that strength lies in the big round word,
or that the brief and plain must needs be weak.
to whom can this be true who once has heard
the cry of help, the words that all men speak
when want or woe or fear is in the throat,
so that each word is gasped out like a shriek
pressed from the sore heart, or a strange wild note,
sung by some fay or fiend? There is a strength
which dies if stretched too far or spun too fine,
which has more height than breadth, more depth than length.
let but this force of thought and speech be mine,
and he that will may take the sleek fat phrase,
which glows and burns not, though it gleam and shine–
light but not heat–a flash, but not a blaze!
nor is it mere strength that the short word boasts;
it serves far more than wind or storm can tell.
or roar of waves that clash on rock-bound coasts,
the crash of tall trees when the wild winds swell,
the roar of guns, the groans of men that die
on blood-stained fields. It has a voice as well
for them that far off on their sick-beds lie;
for them that weep, for them that mourn the dead;
for them that dance and laugh and clap the hand
to joy's quick step, as well as grief's slow tread;
the sweet plain words we learn at first keep time,
and though the theme be sad, or gay, or grand,
with each, with all, these may be made to chime,
in thought, or speech, or song, or prose, or rhyme.

can we do this with e.g. haiku353, limerick, haiku575, fib, acrostic, whatever.. or anything you like?

only single-syllable words can be used

communal, one line per person.

if you're starting a new ditty, just say which, if any, poetic form it is that you're starting, unless it's obvious

to begin (a haiku353):
blue beach glass

YsaPur EsChomuw 04-28-2009 11:23 AM

blue beach glass:
your eyes, cold, with frost

treekisser 04-28-2009 05:56 PM

blue beach glass:
your eyes, cold, with frost
shrouds of fog

5-7-5 haiku:

trapped beast writhes in pain

Marcus Bales 04-28-2009 07:13 PM

blue beach glass:
your eyes, cold, with frost
won't meet mine

This is neat.

trapped beast writhes in pain
he who trapped it hides in shame

YsaPur EsChomuw 04-29-2009 12:37 AM

trapped beast writhes in pain
he who trapped it hides in shame
their strain is the same

an old man lost at sea

treekisser 04-29-2009 11:15 AM

an old man lost at sea
counts fish in the hold of his boat,
and prays his craft will float

brightpearl 04-29-2009 12:33 PM

Oooops, I missed that there's internal rhyme (thanks Ysa)....

This will still work, and it uses one of ezra's most favorite words:

an old man lost at sea
counts cold fish in his wee red boat
and prays his craft will float

YsaPur EsChomuw 04-29-2009 01:06 PM

an old man lost at sea
counts cold fish in his wee red boat
and prays his craft will float
back to the shore; he'll gloat with pride

Stephi_B 04-29-2009 04:37 PM

an old man lost at sea
counts cold fish in his wee red boat
and prays his craft will float
back to the shore; he'll gloat with pride
back at this sea so wide

zero 04-30-2009 05:44 AM

an old man lost at sea,
counts cold fish in his wee red boat
and prays his craft will float
back to the shore; he'll gloat with pride,
back at this sea so wide.
'show me a star to guide my way'

an old man lost at sea,
counts cold fish in his wee red boat
and prays his craft will float
back to the shore; he'll gloat with pride,
back at this sea so wide.
'show me a star to guide my way
and I will show,' he'll say,

treekisser 04-30-2009 01:35 PM

an old man lost at sea,
counts cold fish in his wee red boat
and prays his craft will float
back to the shore; he'll gloat with pride,
back at this sea so wide.
'show me a star to guide my way
and I will show,' he'll say,
'no youth am I, but brave of heart
